Chapter 81 - How to Escape From Being a Troublemaker (11)
I took the gun and filter out of the box and assembled them. Then I opened the door, hopping out.
“Nahyun!”
I heard a voice calling me urgently from behind, yet I didn’t turn around. They probably won’t come after me. Because they, too, would feel sorry for their own lives.
First, I thought about where Kangyoo might have gone.
When Kangyoo played hide and seek, he always hid near a place with a lot of water. If he had been indoors, there’s no way he wouldn’t have evacuated…
I headed towards the outdoor pool with shallow water. I saw a teacher carrying Kangyoo in the distance.
“Kangyoo!”
Kangyoo slipped and sprained one of his ankles, which was swollen.
“Nahyun? Why here…!”
“Kangyoo comes before that! Give him to me!”
I supported Kangyoo and handed over my gun to the teacher.
“Have you ever handled a gun?”
“Once or twice…”
“You just have to turn this dial to set the magic attribute and shoot. When the bullets run out, the light will go out. Then turn the dial to something else. You know that, don’t you?”
“Mmhm…!”
I sighed deeply.
Yes. I decided to give this teacher, who was looking at me with bewildered eyes, a trust.
Common sense tells me that if this teacher had been the same type as the director, she would have left us alone and gone to the basement alone and locked the door. And even if several children were missing, she wouldn’t have recklessly gone outside without a weapon.
Kieeeekh!
I heard a monster crying. It was very close. I gritted my teeth.
“Do you have any idea where Fox might have gone?”
“N-Not sure.”
Then, a shadow fell over us.
I got goosebumps from a creepy premonition. The teacher’s body was trembling.
KIEEEEEEKH!
The monster howled.
When I raised my head toward the sky, I saw the tattered Fox caught in the monster’s claws.
“Fox is…!”
“K-Kids! Get behind me!”
The teacher stood in front of us, shaking. Although she was scared, she was pointing the gun towards the sky.
I hugged Kangyoo tightly and glared at the monster. It’s definitely a monster I saw in the dictionary. That…
“It’s a harpy!”
It was a low-level wind attribute monster, one of the harpies.
It looked like it had fallen out of the group and was covered in injuries. One wing was missing, and one of its eyes was bleeding.
“Turn the dial to the fire attribute!”
Great, there’s a chance of winning in that situation.
I shouted.
“Shoot it in the eye!”
Bang—!
The magic bullet fired by the teacher passed by the harpy.
The harpy seemed angry at the fact that a human or something had harmed it. It glared at us, circled in the air, and dived towards the teacher.
“Teacher! Avoid it!”
However, she was so startled by her sudden situation that she didn’t even think about evading and froze. I tried to reach out, yet the distance was too far.
That moment,
“Please help me…!”
A lump of water suddenly appeared out of thin air, blocking the gap between the harpy and the teacher. A lump of water hit the monster head-on and exploded violently.
It’s Kangyoo’s power!
I ran to the teacher, who fortunately wasn’t seriously injured. However, she seemed to have lost consciousness due to the shock she had just received.
This won’t do.
I picked up the gun and had Kangyoo lean next to the teacher. He looked up at me. The harpy was still circling the sky, targeting us.
However, there was no sign of a sudden dive, perhaps because it was still wary of the cushion of water surrounding us.
I looked at Fox caught in the harpy’s claws. Going on like this would be dangerous.
“Kangyoo, can you help me?”
Kangyoo hesitated at my question.
“I-I’m not good at it…”
“What about drilling a hole in this water? “Is that impossible too?”
“That… Maybe I can…”
“What about supporting a person with water?”
“I can do that too…”
“Alright, then I’ll ask you a favor.”
I briefly explained the operation to Kangyoo. HE seemed very nervous yet determined.
I pointed my gun at the harpy and moved closer to the edge of the water barrier.
“Kangyoo.”
At my words, Kangyoo created a fist-sized hole in the water film.
I turned the dial on the gun. The fire attribute should be conserved. Any magic bullet that is effective against harpies is good.
Then, I fired a barrage of bullets targeting the wounded area of the harpy.
KIEEEEEKH!
Luckily, some of the magic bullets hit the wounded area.
The harpy glared at me as if it was starting to get more annoyed. It started spinning around me.
As the harpy lowered its head slightly, I shouted.
“Now!”
At that moment, the film of water surrounding me disappeared and I became completely defenseless.
The harpy’s eyes lit up and it pointed its sharp beak straight at me. Its face quickly got closer.
I grinned. The dial had already been turned to fire.
Bang—!
I fired a gun. Then the harpy even lost its remaining eye.
KIEEEEEKH—!
The harpy struggled.
I damaged the harpy’s wings without giving it a chance to escape. The harpy’s body tilted. I also shot at the harpy’s sharp feet. Its feet lose strength.
The hostage fell with the harpy.
I shouted again.
“Kangyoo!”
Then, as if Kangyoo had been waiting, he wrapped Fox with water and moved him safely.
I threw myself towards my companions to avoid the falling body of the harpy. The lump of water also accepted me.
Thud—!
With the sound of the orphanage wall collapsing, the harpy fell completely.
“This way!”
And only after everything was over did the hunters arrive. Even if it’s an illegal settlement, aren’t they too late?
Even though I knew I should be grateful that the hunters came, I couldn’t hold back a harsh word.
“Why did you come now?”
Of course. I almost died! Besides, isn’t this an orphanage carrying out a government project? Don’t they have to protect the test subjects?
The hunters looked embarrassed at my words and averted their gaze.
Yeah, they probably didn’t know that the harpy would target this orphanage directly. I tried hard to suppress the urge to be sarcastic. And I asked what I was curious about first.
“…Do you know Choi Garam? She’s my guardian, you know.”
Actually, I didn’t ask them if they really knew her, but rather I sold Choi Garam’s name so that they wouldn’t be able to accuse me of anything in the future. I must have sent a message from the director’s computer, as Garam Choi will be arriving soon.
As expected, the hunters’ eyes widened in surprise.
I continued as I realized that Choi Garam’s popularity had risen significantly after the Yongin Gate disaster.
I showed the hunters the crumpled piece of paper I had crumpled in my pocket and reported the conditions at the orphanage.
Fortunately, the director’s office hadn’t yet been attacked by the harpy, so all data remained intact. The hunters were shocked by the reality of the orphanage and took the computer away.
Kangyoo pointed to the hunters and asked.
“Are you thieves?”
“We’re like the police. That’s what the police do when they collect evidence.”
“I see.”
I sat on a tree stump with Kangyoo and watched the teacher talking with the hunters and taking care of various things.
As soon as the teacher woke up, she heard about the situation at the orphanage and was astonished.
[Nonsense! If I had known it was a place like this, I would have reported it a long time ago!]
[This is an illegal residence. There are no police.]
[But it’s a government project…]
[…You really didn’t know anything, Teacher.]
The teacher seemed genuinely angry at the director’s actions. So she really didn’t know anything.
I reflected a little on how coldly I treated her.
“Teacher.”
“Hm? Why, Nahyun?”
“Shall we play together?”
“Great!”
Once I got rid of my preconceptions, I realized that the teacher was a good person. She was so kind that it was stupid, and she took care of the children first without any intention of taking care of them herself, to the point where I was worried.
How did someone like this survive in an illegal settlement? I thought seriously.
And…
“Thanks.”
“For what.”
I started hanging out with Fox again.
He had a lot of wounds and had bandages wrapped around his body, but fortunately nothing was broken, so all he had to do was change the bandages periodically, and we became close enough for him to leave it to me.
After we became friends, Fox became much more sly.
“But you’re not calling me ‘Sister’?”
“Not sure? Do I really have to do that?”
I wish he would stop smirking.
It would have been nice to have such a peaceful orphanage, yet a problem arose.
All funding lines for the orphanage had been cut off.
