Azurat

Spoiler
  • Name: Azurat
  • Title: Jewel of the Deep
  • Birthdate: Unknown
  • Death: DA-86
  • Species: Dragon
    • Sub-species: Sapphire Dragons, usually born near or in big bodies of water.
  • Abilities: Innate power to manipulate water and to control the weather.

We know little about Azurat's life. We can only gain glimpses of the mighty dragon's background from recollections left behind by Erias Amarin and the other Heroes of Yore, those who are no longer with us. As your humble historian, I tried to separate the legends from actual events, but even then, I can't be a hundred percent sure.

It is recorded in multiple recollections of Erias's initial rallying cry against the Undead that while most of the Magical Beasts stood with him, the first being the Dragons, there was one that refused to follow his lead; Azurat. We can't tell if he did not believe him or if it was because he was a human, but he and a few of his offspring did not join him at first.

What is clear is that Azurat joined Erias's forces in DA-22 five years after the Destruction of Gamhalin. Yet this did not mean he was working closely with him, and we can find many retellings of them butting heads because of differing opinions. One such event was recorded by the Queen of Ice herself. They were planning on sacrificing a small city-state, so they could encircle the Undead later on and deal a devastating blow to their main army. Azurat was enraged by the thought, unwilling to sacrifice thousands, and went forth by himself, facing the Undead army. We don't know the details, but we do know that the city was evacuated, and many lives were saved, but the Undead army managed to disperse and retreat underground before the trap could spring into action.

We have multiple recordings of notable battles where dragons played a role. From these, Azurat played key roles in the following events:

  • DA-41 - Battle at Diamond Bay1This area now belongs to the House of Ro and is home to multiple cities focusing on shipbuilding and trading.
  • DA-43 - Battle at Mount Redback2This mountain range is under Nerifit rule and is a very rugged, inhospitable patch of land.
  • DA-47-65 - Gone missing from the public3Most historian and researchers are sure he was lost in a sub-realm, trapped by the Undead.
  • DA-69 - Battle Against Arcus4We don't know what happened, but there are confirmed retellings of the two dragon fighting, ending with Azurat leaving. From then on, it seems he worked completely alone, separated from the rest but still fighting against the Undead.
  • DA-86 - Battle at the Sapphire Sea5The lake was later renamed after Azurat. He appeared alone, standing in front of a hidden Undead horde coming out from under the giant lake. They would have cut off Erias's retreat to Windswept Fields if they managed to march forth and circle them around. Azurat alone stood in front of them, stopping them long enough for the rest to retreat. His death was only discovered at the end of the Dark Ages. His corpse was never recovered, but hundreds of his scales were discovered along the battle scars, forever marking the lakebed.

There is a section in Erias Amarin's Victory Day speech that many scholars think is a reference to Azurat and his sacrifice:

There are times you just can't agree with someone. When both of you think you are the one who is in the right. When neither of you wants to step back nor give up your own convictions. There is no helping that... not even the Gods could make it right. Yet... even when you can't help but argue with the other person, get heated, or throw words around that you don't really mean... just remember this; The time will come when you have to salute him. Beings like that, who believe in their own cause so strongly that nothing can shake them, are the ones who you can count on when everything else crumbles around you. They will stand up and stand strong, facing the worst, even if it means their death. Those people are the ones I call my brothers and sisters... the ones who I will never forget.
