Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition

Chapter 564: Story 564: The Manor Awakens

The ZETU team braced themselves as the iron door in the basement groaned open, revealing a chamber shrouded in darkness. A wave of cold air rushed out, carrying the stench of death and something older—something unnatural. Captain Marcus Kane tightened his grip on his shotgun, signaling Derek to raise his shield.

"Stay behind me," Derek whispered, his voice steady despite the eerie hum growing louder.

Inside the chamber, a massive circular pit dominated the room. Around its edges were ancient carvings etched into the stone floor, glowing faintly with an ominous red hue. The pit's depths seemed endless, a swirling vortex of shadows pulsating within.

Marcus clicked his comms. "East wing, report. We've got something... unexplainable down here."

The response crackled with static before Jenna's panicked voice came through. "We're under attack! These zombies aren't normal—they're fast, organized, and... glowing! They've got some kind of hive mind!"

In the dining hall, Jenna launched a burst of flame toward a group of sprinting zombies, their glowing eyes reflecting the inferno. Lila ducked behind a table, firing her pistols in rapid succession. Ethan controlled a drone from the corner, using its mounted taser to stun approaching threats.

"They keep coming!" Lila shouted, kicking over a chair to slow one of the creatures.

Back in the basement, Marcus and Derek were startled by a sudden tremor. The carvings around the pit glowed brighter, and a figure began to emerge from the shadows—a grotesque fusion of human and zombie, its flesh stretched unnaturally over a tall, skeletal frame. Its eyes burned with intelligence, and it spoke in a guttural voice.

"You should not have come here," it rasped.

Marcus stepped forward. "What are you? What's happening here?"

The creature grinned, revealing rows of jagged teeth. "The Quarantine was only the beginning. This manor is our anchor, our conduit to your world."

Derek raised his shield as the creature lunged, striking with claws that sent sparks flying off the reinforced surface. Marcus fired his shotgun, the blast forcing the creature back toward the pit.

Above, in the east wing, Ethan's drone scanned the manor and picked up a strange energy signature emanating from the basement. "Captain, whatever you're dealing with down there—it's the source! If we can sever it, these things might lose their coordination!"

"Understood," Marcus replied, reloading. "Hold your ground!"

The creature roared, summoning a wave of zombies that began pouring into the basement. Marcus fired round after round, while Derek used his shield to block attacks and protect his captain.

"Fall back to the staircase!" Marcus ordered.

As they retreated, Marcus noticed a glowing sigil near the pit. "Derek, cover me!"

While Derek fended off the advancing horde, Marcus slammed the butt of his shotgun into the sigil, shattering it. The glow around the carvings faded, and the vortex began to collapse.

Upstairs, the attacking zombies froze momentarily before crumbling to the ground.

"It's working!" Ethan shouted.

But in the basement, the creature snarled, retreating into the shadows. "This is far from over," it hissed before disappearing.

Marcus and Derek exchanged a glance. The fight had only just begun.
