Chapter 413: Story 413: The Collapse
The ground shook violently as the Warlord of the Forsaken lunged at Shadow, its axe slicing through the air with terrifying force. She dodged, barely avoiding the swing, the blade carving a jagged arc into the stone floor where she had stood a moment before. Sweat dripped from her brow as she spun, her twin blades flashing as she aimed for the vulnerable gaps in the Warlord's armor.
The monstrous leader growled in fury, swatting at her with its shield. The impact sent her staggering, but she regained her footing quickly. "Rook, whatever you're doing, hurry up!" she yelled, her voice tinged with desperation.
Across the battlefield, Rook ducked and weaved through the throng of skeletal warriors. The undead clawed and slashed at him, their relentless attack forcing him to block and counter as he pressed toward the ancient lever. Each step felt like an eternity, his breath labored, his muscles screaming in protest.
One of the skeletons lunged, a rusted sword aimed for his chest. Rook sidestepped and retaliated with a crushing blow to its skull, shattering it into a pile of bones. He pressed on, finally reaching the base of the stone wall where the lever stood—covered in cobwebs and etched with faded runes.
Shadow's scream brought his attention back to the Warlord. The massive creature had her pinned against a crumbling pillar, its glowing eyes burning with rage. "Your end is nigh," it snarled, raising its axe for a killing blow.
"No!" Rook shouted, grabbing the lever and pulling it with all his strength.
For a moment, nothing happened. The Warlord turned its head toward Rook, a guttural laugh emanating from its decayed throat. "Your efforts are futile," it mocked.
Then, with a deafening rumble, the chamber began to shake. Ancient gears groaned to life as the floor beneath the Warlord and its army began to crack and crumble. Shadow took the opportunity to roll away, narrowly avoiding the Warlord's axe as the ground split open, revealing a yawning chasm.
"What did you do?!" Shadow shouted, running toward Rook as the skeletal warriors tumbled into the abyss, their brittle bones shattering against the jagged rocks below.
"I'm not sure!" Rook admitted, grabbing her arm as the two of them sprinted for the far end of the chamber. The Warlord, undeterred by the collapse, roared in defiance and leapt toward them, its glowing eyes filled with murderous intent.
The ground beneath Rook and Shadow gave way just as they reached the chamber's exit. They dove, clawing their way to safety as the Warlord plunged into the darkness, its roar echoing into silence.
Breathing heavily, they lay on the cold stone floor of the next passage, their hearts pounding.
"Remind me not to let you handle levers again," Shadow muttered, wincing as she sat up.
Rook managed a weak smile. "You're welcome."
