Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition

Chapter 205: Story 205: The Hollow Path

Damien Rook had seen his share of horrors, but nothing could have prepared him for the Hollow Path. The dense fog clung to the ground like a living thing, swirling around his feet as he ventured deeper into the cursed woods. Lena walked beside him, silent but alert, her eyes scanning the shadows. Ever since they left Fort Shadowmarch, the pull of something darker had been guiding them east.

"There's something wrong here," Lena whispered, her breath visible in the icy air. "The land… it's not natural."

Damien nodded but kept his focus on the trail ahead. Every step felt heavier, like the earth itself was dragging them down. The trees around them were twisted and gnarled, their branches reaching out like skeletal hands. The Hollow Path had a reputation, even among the survivors. No one who entered had ever come out alive.

"Stay close," Damien muttered, his revolver ready.

The path narrowed, and the fog thickened, making it hard to see more than a few feet ahead. Suddenly, the air grew still—too still. Damien's instincts flared, and without warning, he shoved Lena to the ground just as a screech tore through the air.

Out of the mist came the Wraiths—horrific creatures born from the curse, their bodies barely visible, shifting in and out of the shadows. Their glowing eyes locked onto Damien as they circled him like predators.

Lena scrambled to her feet, but Damien was already moving. He fired two quick shots, each bullet passing through the wraiths, doing little to stop their advance. The creatures hissed, and Damien's heart pounded as they closed in.

"Damien!" Lena shouted, tossing him a small vial. "Use this!"

Without hesitation, Damien caught it and smashed the vial against the ground. A burst of pale blue light erupted from the shattered glass, forcing the wraiths to recoil in pain. Their forms flickered, giving Damien just enough time to act. He lunged forward, brandishing his silver knife, slicing through the nearest wraith as it dissolved into mist.

But the others weren't so easily beaten. They circled again, hissing in rage, their claws swiping at him with terrifying speed. Damien felt the cold burn of their touch as one claw grazed his arm, but he pushed through the pain.

"The curse won't let us leave," Lena warned, her voice trembling.

Damien grit his teeth, slashing through another wraith. "Then we break it."

In the center of the path, barely visible through the fog, stood an ancient stone marker, its surface covered in strange runes. Damien knew instinctively that this was the heart of the Hollow Path's curse. With a final surge of energy, he charged toward it, ignoring the wraiths' shrieks and the icy pain coursing through him.

He plunged his knife into the stone. A blinding flash of light erupted, and the wraiths let out one last, piercing scream before they vanished into nothingness.

Panting, Damien collapsed to his knees, the fog slowly lifting. Lena knelt beside him, her face pale but relieved.

"We did it," she whispered.

Damien stared at the broken stone, knowing this was only a small victory in a much larger war. "For now." Enjoy exclusive chapters from empire
