Chapter 1255: Story 1255: Echoes of Experiment X

The moment Juno made her choice—to become—the Genome Root began shifting.

Not violently. Organically.

Vials receded. The chamber lights dimmed to a soft gold. The cryostasis of Dr. Leira Mira sealed tighter, entering permanent lock. A pulse spread from the chamber floor like a ripple through water—activating dormant systems.

And then, on every surrounding screen: one word.

EXPERIMENT X: RESURGENCE

Shade stepped back, unease in his voice. "This wasn't just about immunity."

H-13 nodded, focused. "No. This was the real reason the cure never made it outside Blackout. They didn't want to fix the outbreak. They wanted to evolve it."

Juno watched the console flicker to life, cycling through decades of buried logs.

Audio played.

A voice—shaky, older. A researcher at the edge of sanity.

"Project X began with one subject. Not infected. Not human. Something between. We didn't find it. It came to us."

"It rewrote its own cells. Learned our language. Absorbed memory by proximity. We didn't study it. It studied us."

"It chose its form… and then disappeared."

Juno stared at the final video file: security footage. Dated thirteen years ago.

A child—about seven years old—walking calmly through a lab fire. No burns. No fear. Just eyes glowing white.

Behind her, bodies lay twisted. Not dead. Converted.

In the corner of the screen, a project name: X-0.

Juno's voice shook. "That's… me."

"No," said H-13 quietly. "That's what came before you. The first hybrid."

Juno turned, but H-13 was staring past her. Into the shadows of the chamber.

And then—like dust forming shape—it stepped forward.

A child's body. Thin. Small. Face obscured by a metal plate grafted across its mouth and lower skull. Eyes blank with static. It didn't breathe. It shimmered.

The child tilted its head. And somehow, they heard it speak.

"I remember you, Juno."

Her blood ran cold.

Shade pulled his weapon. "That's Experiment X?"

"No," said H-13. "That's its echo."

The lights dimmed. The room shifted—walls twisting into scenes from Juno's past. The Redgate breach. Her brother's last scream. The screamers in the Dollhouse. Every trauma turned to projection.

Shade shouted, "It's looping her again!"

"No," said Juno, stepping forward, eyes wide but steady. "It's replaying itself. It doesn't know how to die."

She raised her hand, palm glowing faintly—her bloodline awakening fully now, the Genome Root code flowing through her.

"I'm not your mirror," she whispered.

She touched the echo's forehead.

Light exploded outward.

The walls cracked.

And the echo... folded inward, its shape unraveling like a dropped memory.

Silence.

All screens turned black.

Then one word returned:

ROOT STABILIZED. X-0 ARCHIVE SEALED.

Juno collapsed into Shade's arms.

H-13 stared at her. "You didn't destroy it. You absorbed it."

Juno's eyes opened—brighter now.

"I remember everything."
