Chapter 55: Preparing for Night Watch
Shu and Kiana rummaged through the jewelry store for a while, and as Shu predicted, they found several handheld cutting machines.
After a high-speed rotating cutting blade flew off, nearly making Kiana his sister, Shu carefully cut the glass door's connection points. Then, with everyone working together, they removed the glass door.
Considering that these bicycles might be crucial to their safety, Shu, after some thought, picked out a sports bike that felt the smoothest to ride.
"This should be good enough..." After testing the bike's speed on the street outside, Shu returned to the bike shop, satisfied. "Everyone, have you all chosen?"
"We have!" "Yeah." A sparse chorus of responses came from inside the shop. Shu looked at the bikes everyone else had chosen with a blank expression.
Mei had chosen a purple bicycle, which wasn't a problem. After all, the bicycle that went with the Lightning Queen could only be purple or black-red. In this apocalypse, he wouldn't even object to her riding a dragon, but the bicycle she was riding had a basket in the front... was she going grocery shopping?
Bronya, he knew she loved Hoomu, but could she have picked one without training wheels? Someone who could have their license revoked for riding a motorcycle on day one needed training wheels? Those were a cover for her wild side!
And Fu Hua... what was she saving money for at this time? Pick something expensive and good! She picked the cheapest one. Was her conscience getting to her?
Look at Kiana, would you? Look how normal her choice is.
Shu glanced at the bicycle in Kiana's hand, and his old eyes finally made out the price of the bicycle.
…
Shu: "..."
Oh, so that's why she picked such a good one? She was going for the most expensive one!
Shu helplessly explained the problems with their choices, and also subtly implied that these bicycles were for escaping, and they should pick ones that are fast to better protect their lives.
Mei and Bronya obediently went back to change their bikes. Shu looked at them, finally feeling a little better.
"Shu, we..." Fu Hua hesitated. Shu knew what she was worried about.
Yesterday, when they were taking things from the shelves, Shu had been beside Fu Hua. He had kept hearing her "Thank you," saying it after taking every single item, giving Shu a headache.
Obviously, even in the apocalypse, taking things casually was still a little too much for Fu Hua.
"Fu Hua, you should understand our current situation, right?" Helpless, Shu could only try to persuade Fu Hua.
Fu Hua silently nodded. Of course, she knew their current situation was not optimistic, and she also understood that these things were currently unclaimed. She didn't need to dwell on it.
But the change was still too drastic. Fu Hua still felt like yesterday it was a society governed by law, and today it had already become an apocalyptic wasteland.
"Sorry, Shu, I know what I should do." Fu Hua looked at the bicycle in her hand, sighed, and carefully parked it to the side, then turned to choose a better one.
...It was the one Mei had discarded earlier, the one with a grocery basket.
Shu: "...Are you going grocery shopping?"
He still couldn't help but say it, making Fu Hua and Mei's faces turn red.
The group wandered outside for a while. Strangely, besides the zombies locked in enclosed spaces, they hadn't seen a single one.
"Mei, do you think the zombies have left this place? I feel like I haven't seen any," Kiana whispered into Mei's ear as they walked their bicycles toward the convenience store in the evening.
"Maybe... we're just lucky..." Mei said, a little uncertain. She had no idea about Kiana's question.
Maybe Shu would know something?
"Don't ask me. I'm more clueless than any of you," Shu answered flatly, his eyebrows furrowed so tightly he could kill a fly with them.
He had ruled out all the correct answers, so he was now more confused than ever before.
Could it be that... the Honkai beasts had driven away the zombies? Or maybe the zombies had left the Honkai beasts' area of activity?
Come to think of it, there were so many signs of people at the station, but Shu had been there twice and hadn't found a single zombie, only Honkai beasts. Maybe the Honkai beasts could actually drive away the zombies in the vicinity!
Shu thought for a moment and realized that the above reasoning could be used to persuade them to prepare for a night watch and escape.
"Cough cough, everyone, listen to me." Thinking this, Shu, afraid that he would forget, quickly spoke,
"The zombies around here have all disappeared. I suspect there is a Honkai beast nearby that drove them away." Shu stated his reasoning. Everyone was stunned and began to think.
"Honkai beasts... are those the white monsters we encountered before?" Mei frowned, considered carefully, and looked at Shu. "If this is true, then our surroundings have become unsafe. We might need to leave here as soon as possible..."
"We also need to assign someone to night watch," Shu looked up at the surrounding streets, while also trying to remember where that Honkai beast had come from.
It seemed to have come from the other side of the building...
"We don't need to lock these bikes. Let's put them downstairs, so we can get on them anytime," Shu pushed his bike to the downstairs of the convenience store. He found the window and stopped the bike under it.
The others followed suit and parked their bikes nearby. Kiana stretched, "Ah~ So who's doing the night watch tonight?"
"I will," Shu said immediately. It was better for him to do these kinds of things.
"I can too," Fu Hua stepped forward. "I can't do much, so let me take the night watch."
"Okay..." Mei nodded, and then said, "If the class monitor and Shu can't hold on, wake Kiana and me. We'll take the second half of the night."
The second half of the night meant that they probably wouldn't sleep at all. Shu rolled his eyes but still agreed to Mei's request.
"Ah! I'm so hungry! So hungry!" Kiana dragged Mei and let out a strange cry. "Mei, I want to eat a lot tonight! Otherwise, I won't be able to get up at night~"
"Okay~ I'll cook for everyone, okay?" Mei said with a helpless smile, reaching out to pat Kiana's head.
Shu was stunned. He seemed to have not cooked in a long time? No, wait, it hasn't been that many days…
