Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Memories of 50,000 Years Ago
[Riding Benares, Sirin arrived on the far side of the moon. To her astonishment, the lunar surface was dotted with the ruins of buildings that resembled ancient Greek architecture. Sirin looked around in amazement, but Benares, severely injured, collapsed.
Before Sirin had time to grieve, she saw a golden cube at the center of the ruins. As if controlled, she couldn't help but reach out to touch it. The moment her fingertip made contact with the cube, a bright light flashed, and Sirin subconsciously closed her eyes.
When Sirin opened her eyes again, she found herself in a pure white space. On a throne full of cracks behind her sat a "person" made of simple lines. It had no face, no hair, no details. Sirin couldn't help but walk towards it.
The moment Sirin took a step, the "person's" figure suddenly changed, transforming into Sirin's own image. Sirin dropped to her knees, not daring to look directly at it.
Human wisdom cannot comprehend a god.
This was Sirin's thought. As the Herrscher of the Void, she was afraid of this space. Her "god" quickly answered her unasked questions.
"50,000 years ago, in order to cleanse the filthy human civilization, the Honkai once again appeared on Earth."
A voice suddenly appeared in Sirin's mind.
Countless fragmented memories flashed through her brain: the dying moments of a red-haired woman, the back of a girl in a white dress with pinkish-white hair, a young girl lying in a pool of blood. The images flashed by so quickly they were almost impossible to see clearly.
The final image was a scene with cyberpunk-style buildings in the background. A white-haired man in black combat gear pointed a gun at a kneeling girl. The girl had short hair and a short skirt, her face obscured from view.
"But after cycle after cycle of rebirth, their weapons grew stronger and stronger, to the point where they could even kill the apostles of God."]
"Is that Seele?!" Although her face wasn't clear, Bronya recognized Seele instantly. Her emotionless facade finally broke. She leaned forward and ground her teeth. "Who is that man? How dare he make Seele kneel."
Thinking of white hair, Bronya suddenly looked over at Kiana, who had procured a bag of chips from somewhere and was now munching away.
"Mmph, I sense killing intent!" Kiana realized belatedly. She scrambled behind Mei on all fours and said hastily, "Don't just think of me whenever you see white hair! That's clearly a man."
"I know, but your uncle made the movie. The nephew must pay for the uncle's debts!" Bronya's teeth were about to shatter.
"Mei, save me!"
"Is that Kevin?" Fu Hua asked, somewhat puzzled.
"It has to be him! He's so close with Yàqīng, how could he not be written into the movie? But he's really regressed, bullying a little girl!" Senti slammed her fist into her palm in solidarity.
"Uh... what if Seele is also a Herrscher?" Kiana suggested cautiously.
"Impossible!!!" Bronya denied it instantly. "Seele has such a gentle personality, how could she be a Herrscher who wants to destroy human civilization! Even if..."
Himeko, sobering up a bit, noticed that one of the flashing frames looked remarkably like herself. She smiled, thinking she was just imagining things.
In the Golden Courtyard, everyone looked at Kevin. Kalpas was the first to speak. "Hah, Kevin, so this is your character? A guy who bullies little girls?"
Kevin was also stunned. This scene wasn't there when he did the voice-over. He was supposed to be a warrior who guides the next generation. He quickly said, "Impossible! Yàqīng clearly told me my character was a hero! Right, you..."
Kevin looked towards Yàqīng's seat, but it was empty. "Where did he go?"
Elysia raised her little hand and said, "Yàqīng just got a call and went out to answer it."
"What?!!"
Yàqīng, having left the theater, was on the phone with Seele. As for how Yàqīng knew Seele, that's a long story.
"Hey, Seele, what's wrong?"
"Brother Yàqīng." Seele's gentle voice carried a hint of complaint. "You clearly promised that the character based on me wouldn't appear so soon..."
"Seele, that wasn't you. That was the other you."
Yàqīng's explanation only made things worse. The Seele on the other end of the line seemed to have turned into a different person.
"Hah? What do you mean by that, you bastard Yàqīng?"
"Long time no see, 'Seele'."
"Don't change the subject! First, you'd better explain why I was kneeling in front of that man!"
"So that I could meet Seele."
"Huh?!"
Without further explanation, Yàqīng hung up. He realized that almost no one around him was normal. Mobius was fundamentally insane, Elysia was a hard-core lesbian, Vill-V had multiple personalities, Seele had a dual personality, and Kosma was a self-isolated chuunibyou.
Far away in a Siberian orphanage, 'Seele' nearly crushed her phone. She ground her teeth. "That bastard!"
"Other me, don't be angry..."
["One of them seemed to have discovered the source of the five parallel truths." On the screen was MEI, wearing a white lab coat and glasses. Behind her was a girl whose face couldn't be seen, only her silhouette, with her distinctive spiral-drilled hair.
"One of these sources is God's holy land on Earth. Through the other four truths, she peered into God's secrets."]
Just as Yàqīng returned to his seat, he heard Mobius leaning over the back of his chair, her voice dripping with sarcasm, "Ah! The secrets of God..."
As a scientist, Mobius acknowledged MEI's intellect but would never admit that MEI's intelligence surpassed her own. Mobius didn't believe in God, but hearing the movie say that human wisdom could not match a god's left a sour taste in her mouth. Did MEI being able to peer into God's secrets mean she had already surpassed the limits of humanity?
"Is that me?" MEI asked curiously, then looked at Kevin. "Kevin, was this what you were going to tell me before I saw you?"
"Ah? Yes." Kevin was suffering in silence. One, he couldn't talk about his own role in the movie, and two, he genuinely had no idea Yàqīng would write MEI into the movie as well. This was a complete backstab from his good brother.
Kevin's resentful gaze made Yàqīng feel extremely uncomfortable. He grabbed another handful of popcorn from Elysia's bucket.
"That silhouette, it looks so familiar! It's Mei!" Kiana's eyes widened. "And that back, it looks like Bronya."
"No, that's not me," Mei said.
Bronya was still sulking.
["With an incomplete understanding of the truth, she built a massive structure on the moon. But her plan failed. God's final apostle still completed its mission!" A colossal figure floated in space, holding the Earth in its palm like a toy, its eyes cold and indifferent. "However, she also permanently sealed a part of God's power on the moon."
Hearing that God's power was also on the moon, Sirin understood the 'god's' meaning. She promised the 'god' that she would completely annihilate the filthy human race in exchange for its power.
The 'god' reached out its hand, its index finger touching Sirin's forehead.
Four gem-like cores descended, and Sirin thus became an unprecedented five-core Herrscher.
"God grants me a crown, and I shall draw lightning as my bow and arrow. The King of Conquest, who shatters all things!"
"God grants me authority, and I shall command the endless storms. The King of Craving, who brings the horizon to my fingertips!"
"God grants me a robe, and I shall dispense the wine of death. The King of Serenity, who brings sweet dreams!"
"God grants me a sharp sword, and I shall be wreathed in immortal flames. The King of Pestilence, whose spark ignites a prairie fire!"
With these saintly declarations, she raised her hand. The ruins completely disintegrated into rubble, which she then hurled towards the Earth as meteors.
"Let the bells of doom toll!"]
