Chapter 11: The Kill-Switch
The helicopter's controls trembled in X's grip as he pushed it to its limits, flying low over the German countryside. His shoulder burned from the bullet wound, but he ignored the pain.
Focus.
The files on the USB drive revealed something worse than he had expected—Echelon had implanted a kill-switch inside his brain.
That meant he was still under their control.
They could end him whenever they wanted.
His fingers tightened around the joystick. Not if I stop them first.
A red warning light blinked on the dashboard.
FUEL LOW.
Damn it.
The chopper wasn't going to make it far. He needed a place to land—fast.
Scanning the horizon, he spotted a dense forest stretching beyond a narrow dirt road. It wasn't perfect, but it was better than crashing into open fields where Echelon's forces could track him easily.
X guided the helicopter downward, the rotor blades chopping violently through the air. The moment the skids touched the ground, he jumped out, sprinting away as the fuel-starved engine sputtered.
Seconds later—
BOOM.
The chopper erupted in flames behind him, lighting up the night sky. He didn't stop running.
Echelon would be looking for the wreck. He needed to disappear.
After nearly an hour of moving through the forest, X reached an abandoned cabin—a safehouse he and Whisper had set up years ago for emergencies.
Inside, he pulled out the burner phone Voss had given him and dialed.
The line rang twice before Whisper's voice came through.
"X? Are you okay?"
"I need help," he said, breathing heavily. "The files confirmed it—Echelon implanted something in me. A neurological kill-switch."
Whisper was silent for a moment. Then she cursed.
"That's bad, X. Real bad. If they still have access to it—"
"They can kill me anytime," he finished. "I need it out."
Whisper took a deep breath. "I might know someone. Dr. Elias Monroe. He was a top neuro-specialist working for Echelon. But when he found out about Project Revenant, he went underground."
X's mind raced. "Where is he?"
"Last I heard, he was hiding out in Prague. But X… if he's still alive, he won't trust you. Echelon burned him bad."
X wiped the blood from his shoulder. "Then I'll give him a reason to trust me."
X barely had time to rest.
An hour later, movement outside the cabin caught his eye.
He tensed. Footsteps.
Then—a voice through a megaphone.
"Agent X. You are surrounded. Surrender now."
Echelon had found him.
Through a crack in the wall, he spotted a dozen black-clad operatives surrounding the cabin, their rifles aimed.
No escape.
No backup.
Just him against Echelon.
X exhaled, gripping his silenced pistol.
"Then let's see who dies first."
