Chapter 95
Knock, knock—
There was a knock on the steel door on the first floor.
“Are you there?”Malandor got up and threw open the window. Before the gate was a carriage drawn by four white horses.
Inside the open carriage was a familiar face he had seen before. It was the personal assistant who knocked on the door.
“Hello!”Malandor turned to Mirania after recognizing his assistant, who shouted at the lack of response.
“That’s the human I met when I first came here. The one who said he was a High Lord by human title.” “Hmm.”‘What’s going on?’
With that question out of the way, Mirania pushed herself to her feet, suddenly realizing the mess inside the mansion.
I caught a glimpse of Landes, the second-in-command of the Magic Tower, and Tower Master, the alchemist passed out in the corner, and I felt a little uncomfortable.
“Mmm.”She let out a heavier groan.
‘This is not the best way to show up in a borrowed space.’
Instead of opening the door to the first floor, Mirania walked over to the window and hopped onto her broom.
“Ugh!”The dignified-looking assistant screamed as she saw Mirania fall from the sky.
As was the normal human reaction, Mirania stumbled over to the Chancellor, who was sitting in his carriage.
He stared at the window and the doorway, wondering why anyone would come down from the sky when there was a perfectly good door, but his expression softened as Mirania approached.
“I thought we’d heard the last of you. What brings you here?”The chancellor bowed his head, more polite than ever.
“I thought I would no longer be bothering you, Great Witch. It seems that things are not going my way.” “What’s the matter?” “Nothing is going on, but I have a favor to ask of you that I’m afraid I can’t refuse, so I’ve come to see you in person.” “From whom?”The chancellor smiled bitterly and bowed his head in understanding.
“Her Majesty the Empress wishes to see you.”‘Well, she’s the only one who should see me this way.’
Mirania thought back to their brief encounter with her the other day.
…A human in love with the Emperor.
…Driven to jealousy.
…Someone who had shown her the destructive side of love.
Mirania’s brow furrowed slightly as she finished reminiscing.
In her thousand years of life, no time had ever been as valuable as these recent days.
With every minute counting, she didn’t want to be distracted, so she didn’t welcome his visit.
“She is a troublemaker for you.” “At heart, yes, she is a troublemaker, and I’d rather not see her lose heart. You know what they say about no parent beating their child?” “That’s your heart, and I don’t think I need to play along.” “…”Seeing his expression, he lowered his posture even more politely.
“This is my last request, so please accept it positively. By the way, the Empress has said that she no longer considers the request I made last time.” “You mean she wants to do something else this time?” “That much I do not know.”Mirania narrowed her eyes in a
‘hmm’
as she realized that the Chancellor’s polite and cautious demeanor made it difficult for her to refuse.
‘I suppose I shouldn’t take the Emperor’s words so lightly since we’re on the second continent, but I’m about to leave, so it doesn’t matter if I don’t listen.’
Mirania shrugged, having just promised the three troublemakers that she would spend time with them from now on, but she decided to stop by the palace one last time.
‘Alright, I’ll bring Alice with me while I’m there.’
After briefing Malandor, Grecan, and Leverianz on the situation, Mirania climbed into the chancellor’s carriage.
Leverianz nodded and asked, “How long do you think it will take?”
“I’ll be back in a moment, and you should be preparing to return to the witch castle.”The carriage sped off, arriving at the palace faster than expected.
In a flash. Mirania leaped from the carriage before anyone could approach, and her face lit up at the sight of the towering palace.
‘I’m surprised you’ve brought me here, by the way. It seems you’ve moved your residence back to the Empress’s palace.’
She turned to walk away.
Thud!Startled by the strange sound, Mirania turned around, and her eyes widened as she saw Grecan standing in front of the carriage, dusting off his knees.
“What are you doing out there?” “I followed you. Are we going right inside?”Mirania subtly scowled as Grecan stepped to the side and pointed nonchalantly toward the palace.
“Didn’t they tell you to stay in the mansion and wait?”She said, incredulously, and Grecan returned her strange look.
“I have a bad memory.” “…” “I’ve told you ten times this year that I can’t stay apart from Mirania.”‘For some reason, I don’t even want to ask why.’
“You’re weak, I have to protect you.”Again. Nodding, he glances over at Mirania, who groans, and then takes her hand in his.
Already in a state of despair, Mirania let him do whatever he wanted.
“It’s the same old, stubborn thing, I forgot there’s no one like you.”Mirania and Grecan, who followed her like a dog, arrived at the palace.
From the sky-high towers of the capital, shouts rang out.
“How dare the Great Witch sneak into the land of men and kidnap a member of the Tower, this is a matter of grave concern!”The old man, his beard reaching to his feet, trembled, and the wizards around the round table looked worried.
“Calm down, Chief.”There were about ten wizards around the table.
Despite the pleas of the young and middle-aged wizards, the old man remained impatient and tapped the ground with his staff.
His name was Arthenon Desant, a wizard and scholar.
The oldest of the tower’s officers assembled here, he was also one of the tower’s most respected mages.
Such outbursts of anger were unfamiliar to him, given his usual focus on the study of magic.
His eyes glowed with the clear blue light of a wizard who was supposed to be a man of clear reason, and his eyes flashed with rage like a young man’s.
“How dare they break an ancient oath!”An oath between the Second Continent and the First Continent. A thousand years ago, the oath was a mutually inviolable agreement.
‘Why now, after a thousand years of silence?’
Arthenon, who knew the importance of the Oath better than most young wizards, could not pass off the report of the Tower’s Head of Information as a courtesy.
He waved his staff with a grave expression on his face, then turned and glared intensely at the officer.
“Did he really say, that they were responsible for the kidnapping of Landes and the Master of the Tower of Alchemy?”The Head of Information, the narrow-shouldered and rat-like of the less physically gifted mages, clenched his jaw at Arthenon’s devouring gaze, then nodded, his eyes darting about.
“Yes, the High Lord says that Landes’ kidnapping was the work of the High Witch’s minions. The crown prince has vouched for it.” “Tsk!”The unsuspecting crowd let out a collective gasp.
The Crown Prince’s frequent meetings with the tower master had become an open secret in recent years.
With the emperor’s power waning, the power struggle between the crown prince and empress was in full swing.
“We were uncomfortable with Tower Master’s behavior because we thought he was using us, who are supposed to be neutral, to fight for power, but it’s different if the meeting with the crown prince is due to the invasion of a foreign race.”A resident of the Great Land. Only mages and swordsmen who have attained superhuman strength are capable of dealing with the beasts.
“For the protection of the Second Continent, our mages have monitored the movements of the First Continent. Is that peace about to be shattered?”When the commotion had died down and the atmosphere had settled, the officer spoke cautiously.
“The crown prince wishes to destroy the Great Witch and her minions.” “There’s no telling what evil they might be up to. Having dragged Landes all the way… if they’ve targeted the Magic Tower, they can’t wait long. What do you say is the Crown Prince’s plan?”The still cautious Arthenon’s question shook the Head of Information.
He had been calmly explaining things so far. As the mages questioned him, the officer spoke in a trembling voice.
“First of all, they say that we need to chase down a traitor within the imperial palace who is in league with the Great Witch.” “We can chase them, what’s the problem? Surely the traitor isn’t a swordsman who’s reached the peak of his powers?”Arthenon turned grim.
As far as mages were concerned, a swordsman who had reached the point of being able to manifest tangible mana was quite a problem.
But even so, a single swordsman was no problem for a mage, a master of tracking and exploration, to pursue.
When asked about the mages with the insignificant markings, the officer shook his head.
“It’s worse than that, the traitor has stolen the Mirror of Adensha and escaped!”
