Chapter 21: c21
The Battle for the North
-The North. Camp of the Sixth Legion-
Due to the important work of the legions it only took one day for the legions to be ready for the advance. The Sixth Legion was positioned in a strategic position at Black Wolf Port although his lord was thinking of making a new city on what was the Don once she convinced the night's watch. In exchange for the premium food and equipment they would get what was essentially control of the gift. Some would think that it was an exaggeration but according to Dareon himself he could say that just because of the benefits in the form of food that could be produced there it would be quite good for the North.
Things had progressed as expected when Lord Stark sent for the military forces. Dareon had taken his horse and he and his elite guards had marched to meet the legion at what was the Black Wolf Port. To make it faster they had traveled to the Twin Cities of the Twin Wolves and from there they took one of the fastest ships. At most it takes a few days to go there on horseback while it takes less than a day to get to the city. From there he was immediately informed of the reality: that they were at war.
The legion marched at his command. Thanks to the sending of the letter, the legion was perfectly informed, prepared and much more for the march. Wagons of supplies and equipment could be seen moving forward. The soldiers advanced in what was an infantry formation while the cavalry was on the sides with small advance parties. The cavalry, although inferior in number to the infantry, demonstrated its power. His powerful black horses from Winter's Nightmare proved why they would be feared by all the seven kingdoms once they met.
So here they were. They were in an extremely convenient position for combat. This was good as Bolton had apparently proven smart enough and was rallying all of his men to launch a massive offensive with Winterfell. His thinking is possibly that if he had House Stark under his control he might be able to win the war. In the position they were they would intercept Bolton's forces.
Some might say that he was a little too brutal. In fact, it could easily be said that it would be. His orders were not to leave anyone alive. All the soldiers would be executed. Every man or woman found there fighting for the Boltons was to be exterminated with extreme prejudice. Many might think that his lord was being too harsh. In fact, I had heard that some thought it was an exaggeration. He doused those doubts by reporting the consequences of the Boltons being able to do half the shit they wanted.
Thanks to their lord, the armies were not only well paid but also had an efficient job and much more. The Winter legions were at this time one of the highest paying jobs. What is more important is that in addition to that you could balance working in small businesses that would mean finishing your time in the legion and you would have the opportunity to work in something else.
The truth is that if he himself had to say it, his master was intelligent when building the army. With each position being important the salary improved which made each soldier want to reach the rank. Of course the soldiers were below due to lack of experience while the highest rank of one who did not go through officer school would always be tied to a corporal whose maximum salary would always be seven silver deer a month. If it weren't for his lord basically discovering that massive gold mine on the mountain clan lands, it was clear to him that the army would be too expensive.
Dareon sighed. Thinking of his legion led him to look at his three captains. Each one by one of the parts of the military force. The captain of the archer division was not a man but a woman. This woman might seem like the one thing no one would want in her army but if there was one lesson he knew it was that you could count on her of all things to be able to balance things in your favor. As the captain she was shown by her ability to make decisions as well as her ability to give orders and know the best way to take advantage of her division. Archer's armor was black armor (Skrym daedric armor) that was meant to inspire beyond salutary fear.
The cavalry captain was a man of more than decent size for the North. The equivalent of six feet. His armor was heavy armor colored black and red. Normally though it is true that heavy cavalry would be expected to be the first order force to be formed he was a much more sensible captain preferring to use cavalry to break the enemy forces. The only reason the cavalry wasn't bigger was for the simple fact that they didn't have as many black horses.
The final man was the infantry captain. He was possibly the guy who had it the hardest. The infantry mission was to advance through hell despite the threats. Infantry armor was gray with a black cape. Their shields were made of iron and they carried two weapons. The first was a spear made of ironwood and the second was a sword called a Gladius. The shield was a round gray shield that had been made from one of the best methods. Much lighter than normal but possibly harder and more resistant. As his lord liked to say, the shield was there to keep you alive by all means.
The three captains were watching with the said map. The good news is that the offensive formation was assembled not in what was the Bolton fortress, but in the River of Tears. It was good news because if it were the other way it would mean having to cross the mountains. Although he could trust his lord in case of need for an assault on a fortress, as his lord liked to say, attacking a fortress meant being willing to lose soldiers, something he refused to do.
It also explained how the bastard prince had been able to enter the North of all things and thus leave at the same time. He wasn't surprised that his lord was filled with unprecedented fury at the situation they were in. That was a major security breach. Good thing the prince hadn't tried to use any fleet to invade. But of course if he wanted to get in and out fast he needed to have short staff with him.
''As everyone can see the battle will take place in a strategic position. Lord Bolton has refused to allow the forces to camp in the vicinity of his fortress for fear of being seen. However, we will not only be facing Bolton's forces and his allies. There are two mercenary companies. The Children of the Blood and the Pyramid Reavers''. The two aforementioned groups were infantry units which was good. According to his data, most of the cavalry they had was made up of just over a hundred courtesy cavalrymen, neither more nor less than the Ryswells.
''We have the surprise factor. Our teams are far superior. But in the matter of numbers they beat us. There are fifteen thousand men if the information we have from the scouts is true. They are a serious enough force. The good news is also that they lack a cohesive command.'' The infantry captain spoke with a calm voice not afraid in any way to give his opinion. Unlike other gentlemen who felt offended when a subordinate spoke in the winter army, he had made it more than clear that the opinion of the officers and non-commissioned officers was not only sought but also fully expected.
''Those are our advantages. The Boltons still use mostly lower tier armor. Not only heavier but also less durable. So we have the advantage on our side. If we attack them tomorrow at dawn we will have the tactical advantage of the position.'' The possibility of ending this with a minimum number of casualties was the hope of all the soldiers actually. Naturally the legion commander only wanted his boys to return home with a small profit since his lord had promised a gold dragon to all who returned (and secretly two for the death of each).
''but despite this we are talking about two mercenary companies with a bit more experience. While we will also be facing the fierceness and even the ambition of our commander enemies. I don't want to sound arrogant but we're talking about fighting a hostile force that will know they have nothing to lose because of the situation they're in.'' If you stopped to think about it, it was quite normal and simple if you stopped to think about it. Charge and charge. Run over and crush with the cavalry. And he slaughters from a distance with archers. But his enemies were far from incompetent.
''I agree with you captain. Our forces will be facing a more than certain combat against enemies who are actually aware that the crime for this is death or the wall. In my opinion that Lord Stark has decided that he is leaving for the certain death of all although brutal I think it would help deter any future dissidents from such actions. Dareon honestly believed that this was the best thing to do about it. It was an exaggerated request certainly but at the same time he was okay with it. However if his lord was of all things determined to this path he had to be for a good reason.
''My lord, I have to raise a question about it and it is that it will be done with the enemies that offer to surrender. I understand that the orders are the complete execution except for the lords to be taken to a court where they will be judged before everyone so that their actions are known, but is it really necessary to kill all the men and women who can claim to fight in this?''. The cavalry captain couldn't see it well. After all, if they surrendered, shouldn't they be given a chance to surrender peacefully?
''I wish I could say yes. I wish we could do such a thing. But that would mean we have to make sure they get through. And I'm afraid my lord doesn't see it the same way. But seeing that you possibly have doubts about it, let me say it this way so that you understand it and don't feel bad about this action.'' Dareon nodded to himself satisfied with the officers. They were not monsters. They would do their duty that was completely true but they were not monsters.
''First of all, taking care of the wounded or those who are surrendering would mean using the supplies that are for our soldiers on people that I want to remind everyone that they have decided to fight. I fully understand that you will tell me that they cannot refuse, but many of them could have warned their true liege lord of Lord Bolton's actions. We haven't received any reports from them.'' It was the reason why he did not feel sympathy. The few people left there were staunch loyal supporters of the Boltons and therefore he had no sympathy for them at all.
''The second point is that each person who fights here has hope. He hopes to take advantage of his lord's loyalty to get something out of it. Possibly they will just be poor men who want me to leave them alone. Or possibly they are bastards who see an opportunity to profit from a man who is known for his cruelty. Simply put, you are supporting a man who would see all of us as mere slaves.'' His lord had some good information about Roose Bolton. And the man, although he wanted to seem less of a monster than he was, the pure reality is that he was nothing more than a demon who only felt bad about it. That he believed that beating and raping and breaking people up was perfectly fine.
''And if we go to the final case of all this matter, it is whether we like it or not, this is a war. These people have betrayed their brothers and sisters and if they have done it once they will do it a second time. So of course we can't afford pity. It's brutal. Is agressive. But you have to send a message. The North is advancing knights and queen and if we want it to continue for its bright future we need it to be protected from all threats. internal or external. It was hard. It was brutal. But it could be understood. His lord wanted his kingdom to be protected from potential threats from those around him.
The captains made faces but they understood and understood better than anyone what this was. Whether they liked it or not, the reality is that Lord Stark had put a lot at stake. He had helped the North evolve and prosper. Therefore it was normal for him to want to see the North defended and if his enemies thought they could rise it was bad. Compassion was fine but only when someone was deserving of it and luckily or unfortunately members of the Bolton family and their allies were not worthy of it.
''I understand better than you can imagine the difficult task that is being imposed on you. I understand better than anyone how complicated it is to do this. So far every battle has always been against those people as mercenary companies or against Khalassar's warriors who just wanted to fight and nothing more. I understand that now more than ever we are fighting against people who have the blood of the first men.'' It was that bad if you stopped to think about it. It was that kind of a not so nice thing. But it had to be done yes or yes. There was no choice but to do things in such a way.
''commander. If we are allowed to ask, why has Roose Bolton dared to do such a thing? We know that he has sided with the prince of the seven kingdoms and has kidnapped Lyanna Stark. But it's so pointless. He should have known that he very possibly had the power of the other northerners on top of him. Has no sense''. The archery captain didn't seem to comprehend, understand, or even know exactly what was going on. She didn't understand why the hell it was happening if she was sincere. Yet she at the same time wanted to know why one of them would go so far against her lord of all things.
''it's complicated. But I guess the best way to put it is I guess he's been threatened. For years the Boltons have wanted to seize the position of lord of the north. They have desired it and despise House Stark for it. The prospect of seeing his dream achieved at the cost of a Stark is too tempting for them really. It was a stupid reason if he had to say it himself. It was the most pointless reason of all if he had to say so himself. However, it was also expected of the Bolton house if you had to say it. Why wouldn't they be interested in such a thing? Why wouldn't they want to do such a thing on their behalf above all else?
''Do they risk a war with annihilation in mind just because they think they have a chance to win a shot at the crown's side for the position of Northern lords? Forgive me, Commander, but with nobles like these I seriously see the North failing.'' The cavalry captain already had a very low opinion of nobles thinking that most of them were overrated idiots. However then there were the nobles like Hariric Stark. People who used their position to make things better. Although some would say that Stark was only benefiting, he did not believe the same, seeing that he was not a single lord but the entire North (who did not want to stab him in the back) who were benefiting.
''Of course they would. Is power. Roose Bolton has seen her position diminished. With each passing day the power of the house of the red kings fades more and more. some would say this is an exaggeration but it is not. In the North, House Stark rules almost completely. And Roose Bolton thought that he had found the perfect ally for him in this case.'' That's how things worked. Bolton wanted an ally. He didn't mind selling to the highest bidder to the lords of the North. He didn't care to screw them all. He just cared about himself. It was one of the reasons why Hariric wanted to be as exemplary about it.
''So that's all Commander. If he allows us, we'd like to meet with the NCOs to be able to make sure things are ready. The army must be as ready. With due permission from him we would like his permission to depart sir. The infantry captain thought it was for the best. Now things are clear. Roose Bolton is not that he was just a traitor to the North for rebelling against the feudal lord by supporting things that were essentially the help of southern enemies. No. He was a traitor because he wanted to destroy the prosperity of the northerners out of his sense of selfishness.
''You don't need permission. We will attack at dawn. We will be putting in their place in every possible way those who think they can trample us and become lords of all. It is time for the North to be freed from the presence of those who only do harm to the people of the North.'' With a single gesture Dareon dismissed them. Possibly some would say it was negative on his part but Dareon felt it was the best he could do at the time. If he too he had to be honest he preferred this the way he did things. The captains nodded in agreement and left without a second thought.
Dareon sighed. If he had to be honest the idea of a war was not a good one. He would weaken the North. Of course some idiots would think throwing chest punches and yelling I'm strong was fine. It was a trait he did not enjoy as much as his lord. Make no mistake they knew that physical power was necessary. And that if they weren't the best in any way they could say they were strong enough. But actually going out yelling at the rest of the kingdoms about these things was the worst possible news.
His thoughts turned to Tykren. He had been badly injured by the red priests. Twenty of them had been needed, it is true. But he had still been bested in the end. Tykren's magic had kept him alive long enough for Lord Umber to take him to medical attention and be cured. Curing him had been an ordeal because he had been poisoned with magic. However, his lord knew what was done because there were many medicines that could be called magic and they had saved Tykren's life, which was excellent news. He didn't want to imagine the wrath of his lord if Tykren died. Not as high as the anger he felt when he hunted his sister but he would be strong.
Dareon looked at the maps calmly at that point knowing that they would return nothing but he knew the truth. His army was marching into a battle in which the enemy had five thousand men more than his. He wasn't discouraged by it but as he had already mentioned they would fight as if his life depended on it because that's what it meant. The Boltons faced annihilation above all else. It didn't matter how you looked at it and it didn't matter how much you thought at the end of the day the only thing that mattered was that the Boltons were about to be annihilated. He felt movement in the shop and turned to see one of the Valkyries.
''Your orders are that while I engage the main force I want you to lay hands on Bolon and his allies. I didn't even want it to register on them. You and your associates must above all else get your hands on them and get out. That's the bottom line.'' The Valkyries were an important part of the Northern army made up of a group of women trained in many ways in the same fields as the War Wolves except that the Valkyries were all women and primarily served Lady Ashara Dayne. That they were here was only because she wanted them personally.
''Those are your orders. Catch Bolton and bring him into his presence. Before her husband returns she wants to show him the error of her ways. She wants her to know what a big mistake it was to simply think that he could put the lives of her children at risk. The Valkyrie spoke with an amused voice. She and her sisters had been in the presence of her lady when she was furious. Needless to say she has only one jerk would get in the way of her.
''Does the lady believe that there will be a magical presence? That is the only thing that would explain your participation. I know better than anyone the opinion that you have to get involved in matters like this and you only obey your mistress of all things. The Valkyries were women who despised what conflict was. They were sent only to be a blow that would chop off the head. Her mistress had her own hit list as in her own words she and hariric had her own priorities. For example, the only thing they both agreed on was that if Tywin or Olenna Tyrell tried a single piece of shit, they were going to end up badly.
''Lady Ashara considers that the possibility that there are men or women who follow the red god is an existing possibility and that therefore the appropriate measures must be taken to ensure by all means that they are treated with extreme prejudice. It's understandable how much discomfort this can actually cause.'' The Valkyrie knew that Dareon Rogare was possibly one of the most trusted people in the North. But that wasn't to say that he wasn't still a nuisance of some kind in his mind. At least she could tell that he would do his job.
''You know it's unbelievably nice to see the way you treat me. Anyway I will leave what is the threat of the priests if they are for you. What makes me question though is why you are here when they may have headed to see Lady Ashara of all things.'' The possibility was too great if you stopped to think about it. It didn't matter how she viewed herself and it didn't matter how many ways she tried to give him understanding. But in Dareon's mind the safety of Lady Ashara's children and Lord Hariric were far more important than anything else.
''We are Lady Ashara's personal guard. We go where she sends us. And she has seen fit that we deal definitively with Lord Bolton and bring him back so that she will be able to discipline him before he is handed over for trial. We are not to ignore the will of her Dareon Rogare." Though she had to agree. The idea of leaving her lady defenseless was far from making her happy. But she also knew that her mistress was far from useless unable to hold her own in being not only a Dayne but a beyond capable fighter who might be able to match many great practitioners of magic in power.
''understood. I will not question you again in any way. She left you to your business. Be careful. I don't want to have to tell my lord that this has happened somehow and his mistress or his elite forces have been hurt somehow." He knew Lord Stark too well to know that he couldn't possibly take it well if her wife got hurt in some way or worse if she got hurt for some reason by the people who were supposed to protect her. they were not there. The Valkyrie nodded before starting to leave before giving the dragon knight one last message.
''Be careful Commander. Lord Stark is going to be the one who subsequently distributes the resources obtained and I can assure you that it is in your interest to come out as best as possible to obtain the reward for his merits. With her final words spoken the Valkyrie vanished as if she were never there. Did she know what Lord Stark was planning? The truth is that she had an idea more or less.
Dareon frowned, thinking, was Hariric serious about handing over the lands owned by the traitorous lords to him and Tykren? If so, he could understand more than anyone how important it must be to Lord Stark that he stay alive. He also knew that it was very important if you stop to think that he didn't do anything stupid. He would miss being in the legion but if his lord wanted him as a zone ruler he was okay with it.
He stretched out his senses once more trying to locate Bolton's forces. He felt the forces. They were so messy. No discipline. He was not surprised that his lord had a very low opinion of the current military idea if this was the essence of the current army. He was honestly embarrassing. But there was nothing he could do about it but be ready for whatever was thrown at him anyway. However, his thoughts turned violent at what they did to tykren.
With his thoughts decided, he left to go send a message to his sister immediately and let her know that he would be away for a few days. A part of him wondered when his sister would make her move on Lord Stark. Lady Ashara would have to be convinced but weren't the Dornishmen warm blooded? At least that's what he thought anyway. His sister was in love with her lord, so as was natural in his mind, he thought that she could do something. With a last smile he went to prepare. The upcoming battle was very important and he had to be ready.
-Camp of the Red Alliance forces-
Roose Bolton was not having a good day. Not at all. The truth is that he hadn't worn clothes for a long time and had a good day if he had to be honest. Things got ugly when his father died. A part of him wanted to blame House Stark but it wasn't possible. There was no proof. But he knew of his father's plot to harm House Stark backed by an unknown ally. Roose felt more than justified by that action, believing and thinking that as the true sovereigns of the North, things that happened to House Stark were perfectly fine.
Unfortunately it doesn't matter what I try. The Stark presence in the north grew with every step and what is worse Northerners throughout the North revered House Stark as responsible for this. The Forresters had taken the position formerly held by the Glovers, and had grown rich from a business run by Lord Stark. As if that wasn't bad enough on his mind was the fact that each of the houses of the winter alliance were gaining more and more power. So he did what was normal and warned the crown. In this way he would have an ally against the Starks and could use the southerner's power to subdue the winter lords.
He wasn't stupid. By then she realized that the messages were being intercepted. It chilled his blood that day because he knew that then House Stark knew that someone was trying to align the South against the North. Roose could say a lot of things but if he found out that his house was of all things doing such things it was very possible that he himself would somehow end up in the worst place. No northerner would like the very idea of a lord that somehow one of their own was willing to betray them by siding with the very lords who had screwed them over the centuries.
Roose knew then that he had to move very carefully lest he arouse the fury of the northern lords in the process. If there was a reality that he could mark, it is that without the support of many houses he could never govern the North. And although there was nothing he would like more than to kidnap the heirs of a few houses to back him up, he quickly realized that it was better not to do such a thing.
Roose hated and despised Hariric Stark more than anyone could imagine. Over the years Hariric Stark had helped the Northerners. Norteños could get food now and more importantly with the large number of greenhouses they had that meant they could also serve people with food. Not to mention that larger animal farms had meant greater production of animal goods. And that without counting the cold boxes in which they could keep food perfectly.
As if that wasn't bad enough, Hariric Stark had discovered mines in different territories. The action of obtaining different mines for each territory had meant a considerable increase in income. And he had used it to build a port at the Sea Dragon point and also to rebuild the Moat even better, making that great channel that had meant new income. Thanks to those actions it meant in a few words that the North would be gaining two settlements for his people or rather two places for House Stark.
Among those things and much more was also the point that Lord Stark was a man who created strong alliances. Each of his allies produced a unique element that later meant that they produced a consumer good: perfumes, spices, silk, alcoholic beverages, sugar, cocoa, tea, coffee. All of this was produced by the North. Although the Starks took a considerable part of the income, they still shared enough with their vassals that it was impossible to say that they were not receiving a profit of some kind.
Of course at one point he had thought of using said thing. In saying that the Starks were a lot about making profits but sharing little, it was shown to be a colossal mistake. Lord Stark distributed the money in two ways. One was the payment to the workers and therefore to the lord for what was essentially getting the raw material. The second was for the protection of the material from raiders. Needless to say, Lord Stark had made a name for himself just for that one fact. Of course after knowing how much he was earning from the sales of the items he could tell that even the houses were receiving a miniscule amount.
Of course a good plan would have been to mention that Lord Stark was making huge amounts of money from his actions and that the others hardly saw much. It might have been the best thing he could do. But the problem is that no one would believe him. Hence he did the unthinkable and he knew that if he got word out before he was ready he would be dead. He had allied with the Targaryen prince and later aided in the kidnapping of Lyanna Stark. He knew that if the Starks found out that he had anything to do with it he was dead. All his house destroyed. That was why he had made allies. The Ryswells and the Hornwoods had sided with him. But he also had two mercenary companies on his side.
He could honestly say that he had a great advantage over House Stark. He didn't think there was a way that House Stark could take him. Once they found out about the kidnapping, he was sure that they would be looking like crazy and once such a thing was done, then they would search. The prince told him that the Starks would find out that it was him and they would march south. Without House Stark knowing, they would be attacked from behind and then House Stark would be destroyed. He allowed himself a little wine savoring the victory. But his council of war was already there with the leaders of the mercenary companies and the two lords present as well.
Roose frowned. He had been forced to agree to various demands to have Ryswell and to have Honorwood on his side. De Ryswell had to accept a marriage with a daughter of said house as well as at the same time hand over what was the city of Sea Dragon point to them. It was too high a price in his mind but he needed Ryswell's cavalry whether he liked him or not. However, despite that, he had the certainty and the certainty that he could achieve what he had in mind in reality. And besides, he still needed an heir. But the Ryswell house would be treated precisely. Of the Hornwoods he had to deliver neither more nor less than the city of Whiteport and he also had to deliver the Twin Wolves. He honestly was upset with the demands.
When they caught his attention, he snapped out of his thoughts, focusing on the people around him. He could tell simply that everyone was waiting for him. A sigh left his throat before he unrolled a map that showed what the northern lands were. He could tell that he had many things in mind but the most important strategy of all this is that the North was a land that was slowly changing. Lord Stark had rebuilt many territories creating large population positions. One more thing to check. If things continued in the same way, the Bolton house would become the weakest house in the north.
''Okay, let's start. Rumors that Prince Rhaegar has arranged a possible match and taken Lyanna Stark away are already circulating. It's only a matter of time before the members of House Stark move against it in a way that could end perfectly well for us." Roose was counting on the Starks to be against it. It was well known that Hariric Stark fought tooth and nail what was essentially his sister's marriage to Robert Baratheon so you didn't have to be a genius by any means to know that he would also reject what was essentially her being removed from the north.
''It's a good thing that gentleman and all the men who accompanied the girl ended up dead, Lord Bolton. If not, then possibly Lord Stark would already be on top of us with the intention of cutting off our heads. I don't know about you but I like where my head is. Lord Hornwood joked about what he knew would have been real bullshit for them if it ever happened. However, he had heard of the fight and how the knight and the twenty guards had carried off several of the soldiers who had fought against them. He was talking about how well trained the northern troops who trusted Stark were. It wasn't the best of news.
''A hundred soldiers were lost to reduce those men. I don't think that saying that we are lucky is correct. If only twenty men and a winter knight are capable of doing such damage to the forces, I don't even want to imagine how much damage they can do with an army of people this skilled and capable.'' Bolton gave the idiot a look that he thought he was funny. The prince and his guards had seen with surprise how those men had faced those of House Stark. A trace of fear filled him when he found out. The mere thought of soldiers like that filled him to the brim with the feeling that the Lord Stark might be preparing for war.
''Calm down Lord Bolton. I get that he's upset about our common ally's choice of words and I really do get it. But he must understand more than anything that he did not want to offend about it. However it is true. If that man had somehow seen fit to inform House Stark we'd have them on us now.'' Lord Ryswell knew that he had to calm Lord Bolton down before he exploded with rage and rage.
''I have reason to be upset. Lord Stark will possibly be looking for where the prince entered and where he left of all things, which means in a few words that it is very possible that he knows that he left my lands where he left. I don't have time to be a person who wants to be comfortable.'' The mere idea that the current Lord Stark was infuriating himself in the worst way with his house caused him great discomfort. He had fifteen thousand men in all. A considerable sum with his allies. But if there was a certainty, it is that if he got involved in this it was possible that the entire North would say to get fully involved.
''But Lord Stark will find out soon that his sister was taken to the south, do you really think he will have time to investigate? Also remember the contract agreement. We only help you if we see the battle as it is natural that it should be neither more nor less.'' The captain of the first of the mercenary companies gave Lord Bolton a solid look. The idea of supporting the entire weight of a kingdom was against his intentions, that was more than clear to him. He agreed to a blow from behind.
''I have not forgotten the agreement captain. I am well aware of what it would mean in a few words to face the full power of the north. We will only attack them if they are going to march south. Catching them in the rear when they only have one chance to defend themselves about it.'' Bolton was sure that if it weren't for the possibility that they had a lot going for him these men wouldn't even come close to fighting on his side. Naturally they did not trust him since he had turned traitor to his own people.
''and remember the payment. We will be allowed to storm this Stark man's city. I have heard that the man is worth a very large fortune. I'm sure presenting his body to the people of myr will earn us another fortune. They've been pretty much stealing his entire glass business these days really.'' The second captain was amused at the possibility of being able to do it. Not to mention that he had heard of the woman he had married. A real beauty. He wouldn't mind showing that woman what a truly capable man was, not some poor idiot like Stark.
''The payment is the Stark treasury which, if true, has a good amount of gold. I've heard that the Starks themselves have mines that make the Lannisters look insignificant. In that sense, you have my assurance that this will be done. But I would like to see the city stay in the best state possible.'' He was beginning to think that it was a bad idea to side with these two mercenary companies. He couldn't help but feel if he had to say it himself that the two companies in question seemed too self-interested.
''Lord Bolton, do you realize that if we are to concede in such a way if we try to take command it is very possible that the other lords will eat us alive at the slightest opportunity? The fact of the damage we did will never be forgotten.'' Now Lord Hornwood looked really pale. For what reason? Because it was one thing to do what they were going to do. Many would think it was wrong but they were just giving the north a new direction. Do what these mercenaries ask? So it was very possible that no northerner ever forgets in any way the actions against them. At the slightest opportunity that they are given, what will be clear is that they will see their families dead.
''tch you guys seem too uptight about it. You just need to take some of the lords prisoner and all that shit. The people of the North will not have the balls to face you if their lords are in danger of dying in some way. That's how it's always worked.'' The first of the two mercenaries spoke in a mocking voice. The very idea that they unreasonably feared what they would do to them if they had a chance bothered him. Everybody knew that when you wanted to do something you had to do it through sheer force.
''This is not the south. It is not from anywhere that you believe friend. This is not how things work. If we do what you are telling us to allow you to do, I can assure you of one thing. Either we destroy all the houses or they will be learning and at the slightest opportunity they will seek revenge against us''. Ryswell was willing to gamble on one chance for the power of all things. He wouldn't deny it. But one thing was an opportunity and another thing is to be remembered. In addition, they would already be frowned upon due to the fact that they allied with lords from the south. If they did it all wrong things would get even worse.
''It's not my problem or my associate's. We want the pay. If we don't get the pay we think we deserve then it's pretty simple for us and we'll leave things as they are. I have no intention of getting into shit up to my neck if there isn't the pay we want.'' For the mercenary things were pretty simple if you stopped to think about it. He was gambling here of all things so of course he wanted to make sure he got the payoff that in his mind he deserved. Some would say that was an exaggeration but it was the good thing about being in his position.
"Calm down everyone. Both will have the monetary reward. The looting of what are the Stark coffers will be allowed. But nothing else. We promised money and that's what you'll get in return. I will not allow the city to be damaged, much less allow everyone to remember me as the miserable traitor who destroyed several lives''. Not that he had a problem with hurting northern lives but if it was said that he was responsible for letting foreigners pass he would have everyone on top of it. No matter how many hostages he holds about it he will be seen as little more than a threat to the North and he would not trust anyone in the shadow of his life.
''As you wish Bolton. But he remembers. It's the money. And it will be good money to be delivered to us. In the event that it is not done, we will be more than upset.'' The mercenary captain was sure of victory. According to his sources, the North had no more than forty thousand men and almost none of them knew what it was to really fight. Having the tactical advantage was one of the most important things. If they were able to get their hands on House Stark it would be guaranteed that they would have a fortune on his side. He was about to say something else when he heard a ruckus outside.
''Lord Bolton has seen a force of ten thousand men come here. They are armed. There are at least two thousand cavalry with them, my lord. And they advance without mercy. Our trackers have said that they have eliminated all the patrols that were in the area.'' The runner was nervous. It wasn't just about how well armed the fighters were. No. Infantry in large numbers was something, but cavalry? but archers too? The very thought filled him with fear. They were stuck in his position if he had to say so. To the boy's surprise each of the lords got nervous about it. The mercenaries looked disgusted about it as if they had been told something unpleasant.
''I thought you said that the North had a force of forty thousand at its peak. Why would they send a quarter of their forces here when they should soon be marching on the South to deal with what is the prince having given him? stolen her sister's pussy?''. The mercenary was far from happy. This was against his plans if he had to say so himself. He was supposed to say it himself that the force of the North would be advancing to the south, couldn't they really believe that only thirty thousand men would be able to face the force of this dragon prince?
"This doesn't make sense. Where did they get a cavalry of two thousand men? And why are they deploying it here when they should be more interested in the south? What information have you not communicated to us Bolton?'' Ryswell was far from happy. Since the horse lords of the North had complete control of horse production, where did these horses come from that should not be part of their stables? This didn't make sense. Unless Lord Stark somehow financed of all things to put up a cavalry. But that would be expensive.
''Let's calm down. We will go out to talk to them and see what they want. Meanwhile put all the forces to fight. If it is true that there are only ten thousand men, we can wipe them out like nothing if they want to fight against us of all things.'' Roose couldn't figure it out. Why was Stark leaving a part of his forces to the North to fight when he should actually be more interested in bringing justice for his sister? Why sacrifice so many soldiers? He knew about his plans and sent them to the slaughterhouse? Or did he really believe that they had the strength to subdue them of all things with such small numbers of soldiers?
''This is not what we agreed to in any way Bolton. If those people have come for your head you will be alone because there is no way you will see us get our hands dirty by the fact that you were wrong planning all this shit. The mercenary captain snarled at Lord Bolton who just stared back at him. Obviously without being scared.
Roose was speechless for a while. But he didn't make any sense in his mind really. He couldn't understand nor did he comprehend how things were what they were. From his point of view, Lord Stark was supposed to have learned of the threat from the south. That his sister had been kidnapped and therefore he should be charging in his direction to save his sister. Then he would take advantage and attack from behind. Nothing against Lord Stark, just good business if he had to say so himself.
Where had Lord Stark gotten the courage to sacrifice ten thousand soldiers? The southern armies were far from outnumbered. The southern armies especially the Dominion could muster a hundred thousand men. Certainly summer men. No true battle skills. But even despite this there were a hundred thousand soldiers and the mass was capable of doing considerable damage if you stopped to think about it. So of course Lord Stark shouldn't be able to call so many soldiers on his part in any way. He didn't make sense in his mind.
Could the Lord Stark have assembled mercenary companies? Lord Stark had a lot of money from everything he earned, not just in terms of what was essentially trading. That's not counting the money he had to earn from his gold mine. No. He wasn't in his mind in any way for that to happen in the slightest. He had no way of comprehending or understanding in his mind how House Stark planned to take the war south without his men. No way, at least not for him. But he decided that he had more important things to do than just think about it and he set out to prepare for battle.
He left the tent and witnessed the soldiers running for their lives doing everything they could think of. The truth is that he had little compassion for them. His only goal was to help him become the great lord. He would gladly sacrifice every soldier here for the sake of his cause of all things. So he decided right then and there that he was pretty clear about things. He went to equip himself and meet this threat before anything else. He was very clear that he would be the winner here. The red kings were to rule. He had no doubts about it in his mission. So he put on his mask. He had no idea how wrong he was about it.

-POV Bolton Alianza-
All the red alliance and the mercenaries could see the northern army better now. In fact, they had an idea of them and they were terrified. The army's armor was much better than theirs. Even the soldiers of the mercenary groups were nervous about the clearly better and superior armor. But the cavalry was not far behind. The black horses were very large and looked even more fierce and strong than their cavalry. The opinion that the entire alliance had was where such an army came from.
Questions came to the alliance as to where exactly the money, wealth and resources came from. The North should absolutely not be able to afford equipment of such high quality. Neither were the horses that were essentially so strong. No. Lord Stark was lying to everyone in some way. He had hidden the wealth of House Styark in order to grow in strength. This led everyone in the alliance to start yelling at the army. A scream that was only made for a reason. A form of defense.
The soldiers of the northern army stood firm in ranks. Looking at those who insulted them as if they were nothing. As if his words had zero value to them. As if all they could think and say about them is that they were more than anything the talk of a weakling. Some would say that it was an exaggeration of his attitude in some way. But what people didn't know is that one thing that was drilled in the army was military discipline. Above all, keep calm and do not get carried away by anything.
The red alliance seemed about to make the move to send a dignitary when they were surprised to see the troops advancing. The steel line was actually amazing, and the Northern military forces advanced without mercy. There was no trace of compassion. With a shout, Ryswell's cavalry led by the heir marched out into the open. Everyone hoped that this would bring some benefit on their side. What none of them expected is what would take place after all things. After all, it was one thing to see the black horses in action and quite another to see them truly destroy everything that got in their way.
-POV Dareon-
Dareon watched the cavalry exit and with a single gesture gave the signal. The cavalry positioned itself. He looked at his enemies and with a single order they left. The mighty force of horses. The armor and equipment of these. They were heavy cavalry without a doubt. And you could see them draw their spears and get into position. A few small lines against more lines. Before long the two cavalries clashed and it was to the misfortune of the red alliance as the alliance cavalry was crushed by the powerful attack force. There was no doubt about it. They passed them with their spears going through them like nothing happened. Some of the horses were badly off, but when it was crossed you could practically see the field covered with the dead courtesy of none other than the cavalry.
Giving an order all the horses that were running around without a master were called with a whistle. In the words of his lord, resources are resources at the end of a war and taking advantage of them was the best. You could see how the cavalry backed off as if nothing had happened. Not a single loss about it. Some would find it daunting. But that's what happened when you pitted a highly trained military force against a force of screaming idiots. And the khalasar had learned that the hard way.
With a single order the infantry continued its advance. He was in their midst. The black armor (FFXIV Black Knight Armor) he carried along with a shield that had a dragon face and the sword with his. The precision of the advance. A rhythmic and calculated movement. You could feel fear in the air. It could be felt that the soldiers in front of them had fears. But then came the cry and as one they charged. mercenaries too.
With the advance they saw the enemy infantry coming and in a calculated movement they lowered the spears placing them in a firm position. They stood their ground and then came the impact. Like a furious wave that crashes against the cliff. Behind the force of the blow, many might have thought that they would back down but it was only a small step. Between the very weight of the soldiers due to their continuous exercise and the heavy armor the charge was not powerful enough to push them back and then before they knew it the infantrymen began what was the task of pushing.
The infantry advanced. One step one pitch and then coverage. That's when the enemy soldiers got desperate and started all kinds of action to try to break through. But he quickly turned on them as the Northern archers rained down their black arrows. Armed with better bows than anyone could imagine courtesy of high quality wood and a little alchemy they found that the arrows hit targets at a distance. The archers fired in groups of five hundred. Each time a group fired they would fall back to give the next line a chance. The infantry Northerners didn't even have to move, just endure, persist and maintain support while the archers bled them dry with arrows.
The infantry watched in despair as the arrows hit and arrived, and then something unexpected happened when the infantry broke into groups of two, putting aside their spears to draw their swords. Between the use of the well-known tactic of shield and sword. While one attacked the other defended. But that left Dareon who fought with his sword and shield. What no one saw was the thin flame that covered his sword allowing it to cut through everything. For everyone's eyes, and especially his elite guard, they saw how Dareon Rogare mercilessly pierced the enemy soldiers without further ado and did so by launching blows that split armor and shattered shields.
From the back Bolton and his conspirators watched as the army was slaughtered. They were clearly superior in numbers of that there was no doubt about it. But the battle combination allowed the army fighters to overcome. Between that and their best armor taking the attack of arrows, the enemy forces were soon seen recoiling in fear. But then the worst happened when the northern cavalry attacked and mercilessly crushed. The battle didn't take too long.
He and the others saw a group of no more than twenty figures. Smaller than them. They must be women. Bolton was stunned when he saw that they had closed in on his position without any trouble. Before he could say anything they had knocked him off his horse and now he, Lord Ryswell, Lord Hornwood and the two mercenary captains were at sword point. A small part of him yelled at her to fight back but his intelligence seemed to shine through. And then the defeat became more than present in his mind. They had fallen. What would this mean for House Bolton? What would this mean for his legacy? It wasn't the most pleasant thought.
