Chapter 4: 4. living nightmare.
*****
Life was hell..
I mean real hell..
Today is one of those awfully bizzare days were everyone is just in a good mood all of a sudden.
My parent sold me before I can fully remember anything, they're faces are still vague in my mind
At the age of six I began working, learning the ropes on how to be a professional servant.
From cooking lessons with the cooks, flames from the furnace nearly ate at my hands when I was ten.
To learning how to feed the horses, Ha—I still remember the time that horse kicked me in the gut a two years back.
But the truly horrifying thing wasn't the tedious work that nearly broke ones spine everyday—no, that wasn't even close.
My mind drifted, to that moment, when I was just turned nine, the maid had mistakenly dropped one of the chandeliers while cleaning.
That maid was the one who taught me almost everything I knew. Just one mistake.
I dont remember her name, only that I used to call her nana.—i smiled.
Just one mistake.
One.
And she was brutally beaten to death by the mistress.
These royals people may pose as easy-going individuals, but don't make the mistake of being too comfortable.
Slowly over the passed six years, the maids I met before I got here began dying, some attempted escaping, which got them killed.
Some committed sucide.
And others...
That day was still fresh in my mind. The whip, the screams, the bits of flesh that got pulled out with every stroke, the maids that gone before me pleading for forgiveness from the mistress, but they all ended with one thing—a brutal and merciless death.
I was only alive today because of my instincts.
I've read every book on survival, every book on strategy, world, even politics, at the age of ten I knew how to avoid the mistress's foul gaze.
I was the perfect slave.
I practiced how to hold a tea cup without spilling, for hundreds of hours on end.
And just last year, at the age of 15 I finally became the mistress's personal errand boy.
Life was good...
But what about the future.
*I glanced at the windows of the mansion*.
Will I live as an errand boy and die a slave?..
This question bugged me for a bit, and I fell into a dilemma.
"What if..."
*I stretched my scarred hand— the ones that got burnt learning how to cook— the warm feeling of the sun gracing my skin with a gentle heat*
"Just what if I could become more than just an errand boy"
The question lingered in my head for quite a while.
But then while going through the library archives, I found something.
A book about the basics of swordsmaship, and the knights past.
It intrigued me at frist and I picked it up.
Since then my view of the society, basically the world completely changed.
To think an average person like me could be a knight, was a far fetched dream, but there was a chance.
A chance I could actually become one. if I pursue my goals with purpose.
'To become a knight '. That had been my dream for the past four months, it gave me something to look forward to at least.
The way maids were commiting suicide nowadays, I really needed hope so as not to put that string of rope around my neck and hang myself.

Evening fell..
The moons faint glow peeked through the fallen curtains, as the sound of wind brushimg past the window was heard.
The silver coin had now become an antique in my collection.
"One silver coin.. and eight bronzes coins" I cheered excitedly, as I closely examined the coins in my hand.
Thankfully I didn't need to spend any of these on essentials like food or clothes, although some clothes would be nice. I thought, but instantly snapped out of it.
'the food was prepared by the chefs, the mistress would eat, and then the maids would take the leftovers.'
And off course clothes.
'Of what use are nice clothes if their all gonna be used for cleaning anyway l.. ' I sighed.
It's been quite a while since the prince came out of the chambers, I wonder what he might be up to over there.
My mind instantly went to the underground cemetery.
' Nope, not thinking that '.
As I worked my eyes occasionally glanced at the golden doors of the library...
The guards stationed stood in place, both wearing a coat with the empire's emblem on it.
"Grey!". Amy called out.
At this point I was beginning to think the prince was in the library for activities more than studying.
Amy's warm hands touched my shoulder and I flinched.
Amy stepped back a bit seeing my stunned expression.
"What..?" I replied nonchalantly, my gaze fixated on the golden trophy in the shelfs I was cleaning.
"The cooks made dinner.." she said, a bit flustered.
"So..."
"You haven't eaten anything since in the morning so I just.."
"It's okay.." I interrupted.
" I'll come eat, thank you for your concern, you can go now..", I replied my gaze fixated on the task in front of me.
Normal conversations weren't my style, not because I couldn't talk to them but..
'Getting attached to someone like her..?, Nope.. a definite red flag '.
The native girl had been going around the mansion making friends ever since she got here. Seems like no one's going to tell her.
'should I?'
"Amy.." I called out.
The blonde girl's big blue eyes stopped to looked at me.
"You see.. umm..." I paused.
'Wait... what was I about to say?...oh.'
Silence loomed for a bit.
"The estate isn't all sunshine and rainbows" I finally spoke.
She blinked... "Huh..?"
"Nevermind"
I want back to cleaning. It was better for the girl to experience it herself rather than, waisting my time explaining the cruelty of this place.
In no time the trophies on the shelves were cleaned and I didn't know what to do anymore.
"The chores are all done..." I sighed.
The prince was still nowhere in sight.
'should I just give up..'I thought, trying to establish a connection between me and the prince was quite a tedious task.
'I'm not even sure if he'll come out today.' I sighed in defeat.
But then an idea flashed across my mind.
' Wait it's been hours.. the prince must be hungry right..? '
I quickly dismissed the thought.
The royalties were some of the strongest individuals, not just regular mundane humans who'd die just from four days of starvation.
[Blood lust detected..]
[The enemy has found your weakness]
...
'Huh..?'
