Heaven Awaits in Hell

Chapter 28: Fana’s Puzzlement

It was early in the morning, and the light chirping of the birds and the cicadas echoed all around Mo Li's manor. The sound was enough to soothe one's soul and make their day go better.

However, for some, those chirps were a reminder of the past. The one they wanted to forget.

'No!' Fana's eyes slammed open the very next second. Her clothes were drenched with sweat, and her breathing was rough.

'It was just a nightmare!' Fana sighed in relief as she placed her hand over her forehead to dim the incoming light.

As her dream receded into her subconscious, the happenings of yesterday night took its place.

With widened eyes, she pushed herself up the bed and looked around.

She was in Mo Li's chambers.

The next moment, she looked at her clothes and sighed in relief.

It was at that moment that the memories that were transferred to her by Mo Li started surfacing in her memory lake.

It was all jumbled up, and it would take her some time to decipher, but she got the general idea of this new world she was a part of now.

A world filled with martial artists who absorb Qi to become stronger. That's the general gist of it, she was able to understand.

Not wanting to stay on Mo Li's roof any longer, she got up and walked towards the door.

Reaching her hand towards the door, she slid it open.

"Greetings, ma'am," a maid was standing there with a smile and greeted her.

"Ah, yeah, greetings," Fana responded as she looked to her left and right. Confirming that Mo Li was not near, she sighed in relief and asked, "Where's master?"

"He left an hour ago. There's an event today in the main family manor, and he needed to attend that," the maid politely answered.

"I see…" Fana sighed in relief.

"I'll go and prepare breakfast for you then. I've collected water for you in the bathroom so you may use it to freshen up," the maid said, and before Fana could say anything, she left.

A frown appeared on Fana's face, seeing this.

'She's acting completely different…' Fana thought in confusion. Being treated so politely by this maid who was so rough on her during her first day seemed very confusing to her.

It was not just her. The other servants also showed similar changes.

'Is the position of a bedmaid higher than others?' Fana made her own assumptions as she made her way towards the bathroom.

"Ma'am, I'm placing your new robes here," the maid entered the washroom and told Fana, who was bathing behind a screen.

"Alright," Fana said.

When she came out of the tub, a fresh set of robes was folded beside a wooden table.

She wore it and made her way back to her room.

The maid soon knocked on the door and came in.

"Here's your breakfast, ma'am," the maid served Fana her breakfast and was about to leave when Fana stopped her.

"Tell me…why are you and all others so polite to me? Aren't I just a bedmaid?" Fana asked in confusion.

The maid smiled at her words and answered, "You're not just a bedmaid, ma'am. You are also the only person who's been allowed to share the same manor as master."

She gave Fana a meaningful smile when she finished.

"What do you mean?" Fana asked with furrowed brows.

"I mean to say that young master is giving you preferential treatment.

It was only an assumption from our side at first, but yesterday morning, when he returned from the library, do you know what he said?" The maid paused a little to create anticipation and continued, "he told the head servant to take special care of you."

"Take special care of me?" Fana asked with a conflicted expression.

"Yes, but it isn't that much of a shock for us servants. You are so beautiful that it's natural for our master to develop feelings for you," the maid praised Fana.

"I-I see…you may go now," Fana told the maid to go away.

Now that she was all alone, a sense of confusion and hesitation took over her mind.

"He likes me?" Fana clearly remembered Mo Lo's maddening laughter when he saw her betray Zion. She bit her lips. She found it hard to believe the maid's words.

However, at the same time, the image of the gentle Mo Li from last night also appeared in her mind.

How calmly and gently he talked with her, listened to her, and instead of taking advantage of her, he even gave her this wave of new knowledge.

"What does he really want from me?" Fana muttered to herself with raised eyebrows. Mo Li's actions had been too unpredictable for her to make any sense of them.

Giving up, she first ate her warm breakfast and finally focused on thoroughly assimilating the memory that was given to her by Mo Li last night.

'Maybe this will have the answer I'm looking for?' she thought and closed her eyes.

Meanwhile, several kilometres away from her. Inside a deep abyss, several miners were walking towards their work area.

Zion was also among them. Drinking only water for breakfast, his stomach felt wobbly. He felt his pocket with his right hand. The bread was still inside it.

He planned to eat it later in bits and pieces as 155 had suggested.

Zion and number 215 were the only ones who did that. The others were too hungry and failed to hold on to their bread.

They ate it all, and now they were debating in their mind whether they did the right thing or not.

Following the familiar group of miners through the confusing tunnels, they finally reached their tunnel vein.

"If I catch anyone slacking, be ready for the usual ten whips!" A guard snorted.

With their heads pointing downwards, they walked towards the mining tools, picked them one after another and began their work.

The familiar clanking sounds once again submerged the silence.
