Chapter 239 Odin: Why Does This Scene Feel So Familiar?
Heaven's might shook the world.
Even Charlotte, and even Sami who had helped design the plan, stared wide-eyed at the sight before them.
The Great Divine Servant of the Bull King spread its body within the choking dark. Thunder raged, divine light splitting the sky.
From the thick clouds above, bolts poured endlessly, tearing the heavens as the god-bull strode forward.
The original grounds of Nezu Shrine—now Izanami's temple—looked puny before its colossal hooves. One step, one storm, could erase it.
"H-hey… that's way too big…"
Charlotte, usually the queen of bravado, paled. Her legs went weak. If not for her pseudo-Servant body, she might have collapsed altogether.
No wonder her Servant, Sima Yi, had warned her to focus on survival. The danger of this Holy Grail War was beyond imagination.
Buzz—
The divine bull moved.
The earth quaked with its tread, thunder hammering the air. The shrine at the summit, with its jade-shining pillars and black barrier, was crushed as if it were nothing.
Boom!
The god-bull trampled forward, purple lightning flaring from its body, ripping apart the Heavenly Pillars of Izanami's shrine and cutting the ritual to pieces.
Charlotte's vision spun. From hundreds of meters away, it looked like a moving mountain. Just staring made her dizzy.
She regretted everything—why had she rushed headlong into this war? She was no match for it.
Thunder echoed across the forest. Beasts and yokai fled in terror. No living creature dared resist the Bull King's authority.
Sami, however, recovered quickly. To her, such a massive Noble Phantasm was no different than a self-moving ultimate spell. Nothing to be surprised at.
Then she glanced sideways. If even Charlotte was this shaken, what about Nono—
"Eh?"
Nono sat still. Her body didn't tremble. She ignored the bull completely, eyes closed as though napping.
Really? Falling asleep here of all times!?
"Nono-senpai?" Sami whispered, but then a harsh cawing reached her ears.
Crows—black as pitch—burst from the forest near the shrine, scattering into the sky.
Charlotte noticed her gaze. "Sami? What is it?"
"Just… some crows."
"Crows? What's so special about them?"
"…Nothing. Just reminded me of someone I don't like—always scheming, always hiding."
——
"Report, Master. Setagaya ward has been cleared."
Watanabe-no-Tsuna leapt onto a rooftop. With one swift strike, he cleaved off a tengu's head, scattering black mist.
"Hold on—Saber, do you see that? That thunderstorm… and a giant bull?"
"Yes, Master. That is no mere beast. It carries divine power. I advise against making it our enemy."
"…Terrifying. This Holy Grail War is too much."
Minamoto Raizō's voice came through the communicator. "This is a modern city. Letting such things run loose will expose the hidden world to all of Japan."
If not for his careful preparations with the Eight Families, the government's phones would already be ringing off the hook.
As "Shadow Emperor," Raizō's clan ruled the country's underworld. They'd cultivated ties with officials for years. Combined with Kaguya-hime's monitoring system, they could just barely manage the situation.
Ironically, the mass death toll eased the burden. With fewer survivors, there were fewer minds to erase.
Still, the chaos abroad was worse. Satellites surely saw the black storm over Honshu. The Secret Party, Church, Clock Tower—all had agents here. They smiled as allies, but every one of them was gathering intelligence.
Raizō sighed into the comms. His hair would turn white at this rate. How had Herzog endured for so many years, shouldering both masks of power? If it were him, he'd have quit already.
Hearing his sigh, Tsuna spoke quickly:
"Master, do not worry. That bull's power feels… familiar. I think it is not our enemy. Best to watch for now."
He thought of Raikou, though he kept the name back.
Raizō nodded, relieved. "Good. Another matter—our people rescued a female student. She's a Master."
Tsuna tightened his grip. "Conflict? Do you require me to intervene?"
"No. She refused hypnosis and gathered survivors. It complicates our secrecy."
The Eight Families' rescue operations always included memory alteration. Survivors were loaded into trucks, their minds rewritten.
This girl had refused.
"Observe only," Raizō ordered. "If her Servant is weak and harmless, let her be. But Saber—no unnecessary violence. She's connected to Shirou."
"…Understood."
——
For Asou Makoto, this was a chaotic age.
To her, the modern world was no different from ancient turmoil—except now, governments papered over the disasters with apologies and press conferences.
She had witnessed gangsters hypnotizing civilians, had seen monsters kill. How many deaths each year were simply labeled "accidents"?
Now, thanks to her Servant Chiyome, she had survived. More than that—she had rescued neighbors, friends, strangers. Her following grew, too large for Chiyome to guard alone.
Thankfully, the Eight Families' rescue units had arrived in time. They offered to take them to Yamanashi prefecture, where a camp awaited.
But Makoto refused the hypnosis. She demanded her people be spared. Somehow, invoking Shirou's name forced them to relent.
Her friend gushed, "Makoto, you were amazing! Even Genji Heavy Industries' people deferred to you! All because of that red-haired man you know, right? He must be incredible too!"
Makoto blushed. "It's not like that. Just… coincidence."
Her friend giggled. "Cheer up! I'll support you—you can definitely win him over!"
"W-what are you saying!?" Makoto flustered, then hurriedly urged everyone onto the trucks.
But a man in Heian garb watched her silently before turning away. A Servant, surely. Yet he made no move.
Later, after arriving in Yamanashi, the group trekked into the mountains. The land was rugged, red soil underfoot. A valley echoed with natural thunder—"Thunder Valley," the guides called it.
Past that lay "Scarlet Earth," and beyond, the temporary camp.
But then someone pointed: "What's that shrine?"
The guides explained it was Yagami Shrine, built in Nara, dedicated to Orochi.
"…Orochi's shrine…"
Chiyome's voice quivered. She emerged from the shadows, eyes fixed on the ropes within.
"Master. Permit me to investigate. Something important may lie there."
She vanished into the shrine.
Makoto followed, panting. Inside, she found Chiyome seated, staring at the coiled shimenawa.
"Assassin? What are you looking for?"
"Do you recall, Master? When I first manifested, I had no memory. Even Shirou's reminders stirred nothing."
"Yes, but it didn't affect you, did it?"
"Because the Grail grants common knowledge. But without my memories, I cannot use my Noble Phantasm."
"…Your Noble Phantasm?" Makoto's eyes widened.
Chiyome's gaze darkened. "My memory has returned. I am head shrine maiden of Kai and Shinano. Both ninja and miko. My faith—descended from Kōga Saburō—was bound to Ibuki Daimyōjin, the Great Serpent. Orochi."
She whispered: "The summoning's catalyst… was Orochi itself."
Makoto froze. The monstrous serpent she had glimpsed in Yomi… her Servant's curse.
Chiyome's lips trembled. "Spirit Invocation—Origin of Ibuki Daimyōjin—"
She clamped her mouth shut. Someone had spoken through her.
The shrine was silent. Only the stagnant black mist remained.
But shrine was temple. Priestess was vessel. Though Izanami's rite was cut short, another ritual now stirred.
——
An endless plain, strewn with flowers. Peaceful fragrance in the air.
But Izanami's fury burned.
Her bond with the temple was cut. She had been one step from godhood—and now she was stalled at the threshold, a false god.
"Damn you humans! Yomi—consume them all!"
She roared, blackness flooding outward. But at once, the space itself suppressed her.
For this was Shirou's Reality Marble—Unlimited Blade Works.
Blades jutted from the hills, each a brilliant Noble Phantasm.
Shirou raised his hand. The swords rose, gleaming, releasing their true names.
Her darkness surged—but was drowned by a torrent of radiant steel.
"Come then, Izanami. How much of Yomi's power do you have left?"
