Chapter 270.The few who matter to us
In a very flamboyant hall, two individuals were seated in two armchairs opposite one another, Lian Yu and Kailen Darkhaven.
Kailen currently had complete understanding of what had happened to the Sword Tribunal Sect.
Vimodial Contractors.
These bastards had destroyed the sect.
Out of nowhere, they suddenly landed on the planet on which the Sword Tribunal Sect was located and razed it to the ground.
Lian Yu was able to escape because the sect members had bought time for him to escape, sacrificing themselves for him in the end.
The Vimodial Contractors had also chosen a very important day in the sect to launch their attack.
A day where all sect members were present—the memorial ceremony for Kailen's father, Saul Darkhaven.
Kailen had never been more determined to go after the Vimodials and Vimodial Contractors.
If at first he deemed it a necessary thing to do to ensure the safety of his loved ones, he currently had another more personal reason to put an end to them—they had dishonored the memorial ceremony of his father, held by the Sword Tribunal Sect to honor his "presumed death" after he disappeared with his wife during the clash with Cyrus Darkhaven.
The sect that honored his father, the sect his father respected and was devoted to, had been destroyed on a day they all gathered to honor his father's death by the Vimodial Contractors.
Kailen's expression was calm, but Lian Yu could see the trace of anger and desire for revenge that flashed through his eyes, one that was enough to even send chills crawling up his spine.
"From the sense of devotion and loyalty father had to the sect, wherever he is in the afterlife, he's extremely angry and pissed, wanting nothing more than to tear those Vimodial Contractors apart for what they did to the sect." Lian Yu stared at Kailen, listening to his words, Kailen's voice full of coldness. "Since that's the case, I suppose I have another potent reason to get rid of as many of these Vimodials and Vimodial Contractors as much as I can."
Lian Yu had never felt more happier.
Finally, someone who could share the burden of vengeance he bore with him at the moment.
He made his decision as quickly as possible, voicing it out to Kailen.
"Senior brother, we are in this together. Also, I will help you with the matters of the Sword Tribunal Society. Others may think your decision to start the Sword Tribunal Society is a joke, but I know they will be shocked very soon about how much the Sword Tribunal Society will trounce all the societies in the academy. Let's build this society to bring honor to the fallen members of the Sword Tribunal Sect, and also to your father!"
Kailen could perceive the sincerity in Lian Yu's words.
After all, he had a skill that was literally a lie detector—the detective gimmick's skill.
Plus, he had dealt with his fair share of hideous people to know that the guy was being sincere.
Kailen nodded at his words with a genuine smile. "It's wonderful to have you on board."
Lian Yu was extremely surprised.
This was the first time he had seen Kailen behave so free and smile genuinely.
"So he can also smile like normal people too. And isn't this extremely warm side of him too incredulous to believe?"
Kailen always gave killer vibes after all—calm, collected, cold.
Lian Yu didn't know he had just muttered out those words outwardly.
He only realized it when he saw Kailen staring at him with a 'seriously?' kind of expression.
However, Kailen didn't seem offended with his words. Instead, Kailen found the guy's words amusing, chuckling lightly as he asked Lian Yu.
"Am I that terrifying?" Kailen asked. He added before Lian Yu could answer his question:
"Oh, and call me Kailen. The senior brother thing is too cringe."
Lian Yu found Kailen's question amusing.
Having noticed that Kailen didn't want to be addressed with the senior brother title all the time, he replied to him by addressing Kailen with his name. "You really have no idea how terrifying you are, don't you Kailen? Putting all your terrifying feats aside, each one enough to make one be classified as an extremely monstrous prodigy, you naturally have this cold intimidating presence around you, one that makes people have to think twice before approaching you."
"I see," Kailen replied. "The more people stay out of my way, the better. I suppose that kind of personality helps in the end. Too many people around, too much drama to handle."
Lian Yu chuckled, and now more comfortable around Kailen after he showed his carefree side, he downed the cold bittersweet contents of the glass before him, before replying to Kailen. "Well, I suppose it's better to have a few people you can trust in your circle than an entire army of future backstabbers acting like they give a damn about you."
He naturally felt like keeping a small circle was the best way to approach life. The destruction of the Sword Tribunal Sect had taught him that the hard way.
Most of the fellas he treated as friends ignored him and cut ties with him completely after the sect got destroyed. It was then that he realized that all those people were just opportunists, flocking around him because of his background.
The larger the circle, the more the drama and the greater the chances of betrayal.
"Always refreshing to have a like-minded person around," Kailen nodded, downing the content of his glass.
Lian Yu chuckled. "Say that about me during the time before the destruction of the sect."
Kailen's eyes widened with intrigue. "I see. Humor me."
"I was a carefree playboy, indulging myself with all manner of women from different races. I was a drunk too. Inasmuch as I was a genius of the sect, I spent too much time on frivolous endeavors, and with people who deemed me as a means to an end rather than genuine friends who cared about me, instead of training harder and focusing on increasing my strength."
Kailen noticed Lian Yu's sapphire-like eyes flickered with melancholy as he spoke. Lian Yu proceeded: "I figured out the hard way that most of the time people just want to use you and cast you aside. Only a few ones will genuinely care for you. In my situation, I couldn't even save the few people who cared for me. I wasted their resources invested in me on useless endeavors instead of focusing on my training. In the end, I failed them because I wasn't strong enough. But I don't want that to ever happen again, senior brother."
Kailen sighed deeply.
Of course he understood this guy's words.
He had seen over and over again the cruelty of sentient lifeforms.
His own uncle tried to kill his father.
His own childhood friends on Earth turned their backs on him.
The father of one of his close friends was a psychopath who raped women for a hobby.
The biological mother of his woman abandoned her for the sake of her own ambitions.
Name them. Everything Kailen had been through was evident proof of Lian Yu's words.
Also, he knew firsthand what it felt like to never want to experience the loss of loved ones ever again.
This was the harsh truth of life.
But there were also a few good people who would also prove to you that good people existed.
Kailen was at where he was, was who he was because he had encountered those people, especially a particular white-haired lady who had made him a better man.
"As long as we manage to protect the few who matter to us..."
Kailen stared through the windows, his gaze peering through the night sky sprawled with celestial bodies, several images of a few people flickering through his eyes.
Lian Yu nodded, equally thinking the same.
Anaya flashed in her mind at this moment.
She was the best thing that had ever happened to him since the sect got destroyed .
He won't lose her like he lost them.
