Chapter 91: Chapter 91: Dinner Party
Chapter 91: Dinner Party
Compared to Kakashi, whose plans had been going awry since arriving in Konoha, Minato Namikaze, who had spent the day sorting through documents, was also filled with worry. The Third Hokage had retired to the background and bid him farewell.
Sitting in the hard Hokage chair, he rested his forehead on the desk piled high with documents. The transfer of power was not something that could be completed overnight. Hiruzen Sarutobi's prestige was deeply rooted in people's hearts. Even if he wanted to step down now, the major clans couldn't adapt so quickly.
Habit is a difficult thing for humans to change.
Minato Namikaze had reason to believe that if something happened now where his opinion differed from that of the Third Hokage and the elders, the power they commanded could immediately overwhelm him, who had no foundation of his own.
The heads of all the clans had received notice of his appointment, but so far, only the small and medium-sized clans—the Yamanaka, Nara, and Akimichi—had come to report.
The Sarutobi clan, led by Hiruzen, had also been communicated with, so to speak.
That left the Uchiha, the Hyuga, the declining Senju, the Shimura, and the families of the two elders, none of whom had registered or communicated.
The Uchiha clan was understandable; their clan head was still on the battlefield and couldn't get away. But the Hyuga clan's attitude was something to ponder.
According to Minato Namikaze's plan, he wanted to approach the Uchiha first, then the Hyuga. The latter would determine their own position and stance based on the former's movements. There were undercurrents swirling within the village, and the existence of clans was not a good thing for Konoha. If he could, Minato would abolish the clan privilege system immediately, but that would inevitably cause a backlash from them.
The Fourth Hokage, without support, was nothing more than a general without an army.
No, I still have her.
The first thought that came to Minato's mind when he thought of Kushina was not to rely on her, but to see her as someone he needed to protect.
But she had another identity: the jinchuriki of the Nine-Tails.
This strategic weapon represented not only Konoha's strength but also its final safety net, even though the villagers of Konoha detested the Nine-Tails.
He suspected that her being a factor was part of the reason he was appointed Hokage. Minato thought from the perspective of Hiruzen Sarutobi and the elders.
He, who was not beholden to any faction, who loved the village, and who was Kushina's boyfriend, was indeed the most suitable candidate for Hokage.
So, was the news of Danzo's death true or false?
If Obito was lying, what was the point?
Once in a high position, one is bound to ponder the deeper meaning behind the actions of those around them. Minato was no exception, but he still had to have a bottom line. Under the watch of the Will of Fire, no one could harm Konoha.
Evening had arrived. Minato organized the documents neatly. Classifying them was more difficult than reviewing them, and it had taken a lot of time.
This is more tiring than a full day of fighting.
He, who was in his prime, rarely showed fatigue. Locking the office door, the Fourth Hokage walked down the long corridor and stairs, heading home.
Outside the door, Kushina Uzumaki had been waiting for a long time. Beside her were his two students, Obito and Rin. His girlfriend was clearly dressed up with care; with her excellent features, she only needed light makeup to completely suppress her fiery personality.
"Have you been waiting long?"
"We just arrived."
Kushina smiled and came to his side. Minato's sharp eyes noticed several bumps on Obito's head that looked freshly swollen, and Rin's cheeks were also red—not from blushing, but from being pinched.
"Did you bully them?"
"I'm so gentle, how could I possibly bully your students? It's just that Rin's cheeks are so nice to touch, and Obito fell while climbing a tree."
"Is that so?"
Hearing this, Obito was about to retort but saw the threat in his master's wife's eyes and thought of her terrifying nature.
"Yeah, yeah! My Sharingan is nearsighted, I couldn't see the tree clearly. I fell three or four times while climbing."
Minato understood the hidden meaning perfectly. He wanted to pat Obito's head, but the latter quickly dodged. He had learned that move from Kakashi. Obito had originally wondered why he was growing slower than Kakashi, but later he found out the reason.
"Anyway, thank you for waiting for me here. Let me treat you to dinner."
"Sensei."
Rin stood obediently to the side. Seeing her like this made Kushina want to pinch her soft little cheeks again.
"What is it, Rin?"
"Master's wife and I cooked at your house. It's just as good as any restaurant, you know."
"Then you must have started preparing a long time ago. I'm sorry to have kept you waiting for so long. Let's go home and eat."
Minato Namikaze and Kushina exchanged a look, each seeing their reflection in the other's eyes. Kushina whispered in Minato's ear.
"I have something to tell you after dinner. Let's have them go home early."
"Alright."
The group of four walked cheerfully towards the Fourth Hokage's residence. Some shops were preparing to close, while others doing night business were just opening. Along the way, they bought some snacks as appetizers and picked up two more dishes before entering the house.
Kushina and Rin busied themselves heating the food. Minato was right; the dishes had been prepared a long time ago.
The black-haired boy saw the food and touched the bumps on his head again.
In fact, it was Rin who had approached Kushina first. Obito had found Rin later and came in to help, but his poor cooking skills were more of a hindrance than a help. After being kicked out of the kitchen, he had made a few sarcastic remarks about Kushina and received a sound beating for it.
If Rin hadn't been there to hold her back, the boy might have had a few more external injuries today.
Obito would never admit that it was because he couldn't beat Kushina.
"Let's eat!" x4
Picking up their chopsticks, the lights in the room illuminated every corner as the four began to enjoy today's meal.
It was just that the way Minato and Kushina looked at Obito—like he was their son—made him a little uncomfortable. But when they looked at Rin like she was their daughter-in-law, Obito felt that there was nothing wrong with it.
"Speaking of which, I think I saw Kakashi today."
The Fourth Hokage was the first to put down his chopsticks and address the other three, who were still eating.
"Kakashi? Impossible."
Obito remained calm, first denying any knowledge of Kakashi's return to throw off any suspicion that he had met with him.
"Eh?"
Rin was a little surprised. She knew Kakashi wasn't dead, but she hadn't expected him to return to the village at this time.
"Then why didn't Kakashi come to see us?"
"Maybe... I don't know."
Obito tried to come up with an excuse for the silver-haired boy for three seconds, then gave up.
"Maybe he has his reasons."
Kushina's perception was sharp. Her intuition told her that Obito knew something, but without proof, she couldn't be sure.
"I believe he will come to see me."
The Fourth Hokage lifted his head confidently. He hadn't forgotten that this Kakashi fellow needed to have his name cleared.
