Chapter 61: Ch. 64
"'M fine."
"No you are not! Should I fetch your mum?"
Harry wasn't sure if his mama would help him or yell at him if he said anything. He felt sick.
"If I don't feel better by dinner we'll tell her," he decided. He did feel tired, perhaps more sleep would help fix things. Although he desperately wanted to go to breakfast to see if the Ravenclaws were behaving appropriately. If he was lucky, then he'd need to curse them a few more times for the message to stick. Cursing someone sounded really nice right about now. He groaned at the migraine he felt pounding behind his eyes.
"Back into bed," Ron ordered. "You look worse than you do at Yule. Anyone takes one look at you like this, and they'll run off screaming. I'll bring you some toast before class. Maybe take a shower if you feel up to it, you smell like death too."
Harry let himself be corralled back into bed. His sleep was still haunted by nightmares and ghostly figures, and he spent all day in a haze. He woke up around four, his grogginess slowly ebbing away as he had the strength to take a very hot shower and down some headache potions. By the time he had done all that, he felt well enough to go to dinner.
But when he got down to the Great Hall, he found Ron and Hermione, both of whom had the color drained from their faces.
"Did you hear the rumors?" Hermione asked, wringing her hands in anxiety.
"No?" Harry said. "What's up?"
"It's Luna! Professor Flitwick pulled her away at lunch and she hasn't returned yet. Some of the Ravenclaws were gossiping during Defense and they said that the second-year Ravenclaws came back late last night and were accusing Luna of casting the Cruciatus on them!"
"Shit," Harry said. "Surely no one thinks Luna would actually do that?" His heart started to beat erratically. He would have to show them the error of their ways. In a very particular, very painful way.
No! It was the intoxicating effects of the Cruciatus that had made him mess up in the first place. He had to stay calm. He could still fix this.
"Harry!" They were interrupted by his mama, an angry scowl affixed on her face. "Follow me, now." He hung his head and went to follow, his minions trailing behind for a second before Alabasandria shooed them away firmly.
"Explain yourself. Two of Luna's dormmates cursed and the lot of them sobbing about shadows and invisible figures and Dark magic."
"They were bullying Luna. I thought I tortured them enough that they wouldn't be stupid enough to say anything."
She put her head in her hands and sighed deeply.
"Are you serious?"
"I think Sirius is serious -"
"Now is not the time for jokes!" She yelled. "The Cruciatus leaves a particular effect, you cannot hide that the curse was used - they will both suffer from seizures for months. All of the professors are hellbent on catching the culprit."
"But they don't think it's Luna, do they?" Harry asked. He would not forgive himself if Luna ended up expelled and arrested because of him.
"No, I had to intervene on her behalf. I forced the children to admit they accused Luna because they did not like her. But we must give them someone to crucify for this. Dumbledore will not let it go."
"I had a plan - I'm not done yet - I just, well -"
"Got a little carried away?" She put her hand over his forehead. "You're burning up. How many times did you cast it?"
"Three."
She sighed. "I warned you to avoid that one on purpose. Tell me, have you been feeling particularly bloodthirsty lately? Irrationally angry, violent, racing thoughts?"
"Yeah, for a bit, I guess," he said. "I really only meant to do the first one, the other two it just -"
"Well, that explains it. I should have seen this coming." She dug around in her desk for a long moment and pulled out a potion. "This is Morgan's Drought. A very powerful calming potion. Drink it, it'll help soothe your withdrawal. You'll likely need to take it for a few weeks." The lemony potion instantly settled his mind.
"What's happening to me?" he gasped, realizing now that his mind was empty that he had been fixated on negative thoughts for a while.
"All I do is talk about the negative side effects of necromancy, and you haven't ever taken a second to think about how none of them have applied to you? The continuous use of Dark magic has warped your mind permanently and it has begun to manifest. It's an addiction. You've been using Dark magic so continuously that you start to crave more and more, require more intense usage to reach that same high. Usually it's centered around strong emotions, like when you're angry. You will default to solving all your problems through cursing instead of words."
"Oh. I was already bad at that though."
"Indeed. Now, don't panic too much. This happens to all necromancers over time. Although I think combined with the stupidity of puberty will make this an unpleasant combination for you. It's very important to remember that you are not controlled by this, it is not an excuse to go around cursing children," she gave him a pointed look. "Necromancy requires a clear and level mind. You must not give in to your base urges. Your tattoos will help with this, they will keep your soul grounded, but you have to keep better control of your impulsivity. I know you despise it, but you really should try harder to learn occlumency too."
"So, I'm just going to be haunted with the urge to crucio people now?!"
"That particular yearning will fade, although never completely. It is some of the purest Dark magic there is - it does terrible things to your soul. And as you have seen, it is incredibly intoxicating. Clearly, you are more affected by it than most. I insist you avoid it in the future, Harry. No matter how much you may want to."
He nodded.
"I'm serious. I will start checking your wand if I think you have a problem. I've lost several apprentices to this madness, I will not let that happen to you as well"
He nodded again.
"As much as I hate to say this, I think your relationships will be beneficial here. Next time you decide to act like an idiot, think about how upset everyone will be when you have to explain yourself to them. Luna will be furious about this, you know. And you'd better not use Necromancer's Madness as an excuse, young man. I understand that your emotions were overwhelming - I really do, I experience these urges as well, but honestly, Harry! What the hell were you thinking? What part of lay low do you not understand? You will come up with a plan right now to fix this mess and then you will calmly and rationally act it out without failing."
"I'm sorry," he said. "I know I have to be careful, and I'm sorry I messed up but I couldn't let Luna continue to suffer, they made her cry. I didn't know I would react to the Cruciatus like that, I thought no one would know what I had done."
"Alright, forget what I just said about friendship being good. I change my mind. Look, faulty logic aside, this is not a mistake you can afford to make again, is that clear?"
"Yes, mama."
"How will you fix it?"
"Well," he thought for a moment. "There is still a couple of fourth years who bully Luna badly. I could frame them for the Cruciatus. I was going to murder them, but that would make things worse probably."
"Yeah, it would. See, that's the madness talking. Take a deep breath. Clear your mind."
