Chapter 42: Chapter 42 The Chess Idiot
Lupin's heart began to pound violently, the moonlight enveloped his entire body, and Lupin felt the light penetrate his body, deep into his flesh and blood, as his blood began to flow rapidly and boil under the powerful pumping of his heart.
He heard all the bones in his body cracking.
He lay powerlessly on the cold ground, unwilling to resist, knowing it was useless.
After Pomfrey left, he had taken off his robes, otherwise, the three Galleon robe would have been torn.
He felt the blood in his body rushing through him, as if something furry had grown in his skin; he closed his eyes, not wanting to look—legs, palms, waist, head…
Finally, he crawled up and howled at the sky.
…
Lockhart was unusually diligent tonight; he had cleaned the common room by seven o'clock, and after returning to his dormitory, he was restless, pacing back and forth, contemplating every step of his plan.
His roommates hadn't returned; there was an Astronomy Class tonight, but Lockhart didn't go, finding an excuse that he was too preoccupied and boldly skipping class.
He planned to go to Hogsmeade when it was late and quiet; for now… he would take a nap.
Lockhart lay on his bed, closed his eyes, and soon drifted off to sleep, after all, anything was possible in dreams.
Alfrina and Gary played chess in the common room all night; everyone had no intention of sleeping tonight, as tomorrow was the Ravenclaw Quidditch team's final match of the season, against the recently surging Gryffindor.
Ravenclaw had, as expected, suffered two consecutive losses, and tomorrow would be their battle for dignity.
Nance Gro, a sixth-year Prefect, sat on the long sofa with a bitter expression; since he joined the Quidditch team in fourth year, Ravenclaw had not won a single match, and he was under immense pressure; for him, winning just one match before graduation would be considered a success.
It wasn't until the early hours of the morning that Ravenclaw students gradually returned to their dormitories.
This did not include Alfrina and Gary; Alfrina had lost so badly all night that her eyes were red, and she dragged Gary along, refusing to give up, insisting on winning one more game before going to sleep.
Gary endured his sleepiness, accompanying her, pondering how he could intentionally lose the game without Alfrina noticing.
If she found out he was throwing the game, he might not get any sleep tonight.
Fortunately, Gary's biological clock came to the rescue; he was getting increasingly sleepy, and his mind couldn't keep up with the changes on the board; sometimes, if he made a wrong move, a knight on the Wizard Chess board would even jump up and curse Gary.
These knights had been scolding Alfrina all night, and this reversal made her very happy; the game ended with Alfrina narrowly checkmating Gary.
The tight string in Gary's mind finally snapped; even with his brain not working, Alfrina had only barely won.
The key was that Alfrina, this chess idiot, had an incredibly strong desire to win; Gary felt that being dragged to play chess by her tonight was a mistake.
After her victory, Alfrina's fighting spirit transformed into sleepiness, and her round eyes narrowed. The two of them yawned as they tidied up the chessboard.
Suddenly, Alfrina pounced, and Gary, caught off guard, was directly tackled onto the carpet; fortunately, the carpet was soft enough that Gary didn't make too much noise when he fell.
What's going on?
Gary looked at Alfrina, who was straddling him like a little lion, with a bewildered expression.
"Shh," Alfrina gestured to him, her eyes fixed on the passage leading to the dormitory.
From Gary's perspective, he couldn't see the dormitory entrance; a large sofa in front of him blocked his view, and he could only see flames flickering in the fireplace.
Alfrina slowly lowered herself, hiding behind the sofa as well; Gary could feel her warm breath on his face.
"It's Lockhart," Gary could read Alfrina's lips.
"So why do we need to hide?" Gary mouthed, very puzzled; even if Professor Flitwick came, he would only tell them to get some rest.
What was there to be afraid of from a first-year student?
Alfrina ignored him; she tilted her head, trying to see what Lockhart was going to do.
Her golden hair fell onto Gary's face, the ends tickling him.
Gary blushed and remained silent, just watching Alfrina sitting on him with her legs straddling him.
Honestly, the feeling wasn't that wonderful; Alfrina was too thin, and her bones dug painfully into Gary.
It wasn't until the common room door closed that Alfrina finally climbed off Gary.
"Why were we hiding from him?" Gary grabbed Alfrina's outstretched hand, got up from the floor, and rubbed his waist, saying.
"Lockhart is definitely going to cause trouble again," Alfrina pulled her wand from her robes, "We have to stop him, if we lose another fifty points, this year's House Cup is gone."
"No," Gary complained, but his hand didn't stop as he pulled out his wand, "Couldn't you have just stopped him then?"
"Are you stupid?" Alfrina rolled her eyes at him, "We didn't have any evidence then to prove what he was going to do; what if he just wanted to warm himself by the fireplace?"
Gary was speechless.
"Come on, don't lose him," Alfrina pulled his hand, leading him out of the common room.
Gary looked down at his hand, grinned, and let her pull him along.
The two cautiously followed Lockhart; Gary cast a Disillusionment Charm on them, which was almost as effective as an Invisibility Cloak under the cover of darkness.
Normally, Prefects would patrol until midnight, and Lockhart came out just as he missed the Prefects.
The people in the portraits on both sides of the staircase had long fallen into deep sleep; after midnight, even most of the candles in the staircase had gone out, and the scattered dim candlelight provided no illumination, only the crackling sounds of burning candles.
Lockhart appeared very cautious, turning back every half minute or so to observe if anyone was following him.
He continued down the spiral staircase of the tower until the third-floor corridor.
Gary and Alfrina followed Lockhart about ten meters behind him without being exposed.
Lockhart walked slowly down the corridor, his ears perked up, catching any suspicious sounds.
Unfortunately, Alfrina and Gary walked extremely carefully, and with their light bodies, not a sound was made.
Lockhart turned his head back, and Gary and Alfrina, already prepared, immediately stopped, their bodies merging with the darkness.
He shook his head, always feeling as if someone was watching him from behind, like daggers in his back.
After only two steps, Lockhart suddenly turned his head again, but still found nothing, only a mass of darkness within his line of sight.
