Chapter 572: Chapter 572: Ancient Wisdom
According to intelligence gathered from the trolls in Stranglethorn Vale and other regions, Orgrim learned that there was once a powerful troll empire in Lordaeron.
Although this empire had long been destroyed by the combined forces of humans and high elves, many trolls still resided in the forests of Lordaeron.
Orgrim believed that these trolls, natural enemies of both humans and elves for generations, were potential allies to the Horde.
One of the key reasons that drove him to take a desperate gamble and leave the Arathi Highlands to enter the Hinterlands was precisely the faint hope of finding and forming an alliance with the trolls.
However, once he entered the Hinterlands, reality dealt him a bitter disappointment.
The forest trolls that were said to be everywhere in the Hinterlands had completely vanished.
Despite their exhaustive search, all they could find were ruins left behind by forest trolls. As for the trolls themselves, not even a single hair was found.
"Did they all migrate away, or were they wiped out?"
Orgrim was at a loss. Without the help of the trolls, the orcs, unfamiliar with the land, could only wander aimlessly through the vast forests of the Hinterlands.
The idea of using this route to strike at the rear of the Alliance was nothing more than a fantasy.
Just as Orgrim was growing increasingly disheartened and on the verge of giving up, good news finally arrived.
Among the scouting parties sent out to track down the trolls, one reported promising findings, signs of troll activity near a place called Misty Darkwhisper Gorge.
Elated, Orgrim immediately ordered more squads to search the area.
Soon, more good news followed.
Some claimed to have discovered totems belonging to certain forest troll clans. Others reported sightings of unfamiliar trolls passing by.
Still others swore they had seen signs of a troll settlement within the mists of Darkwhisper Gorge...
All evidence pointed to one conclusion: Darkwhisper Gorge was likely the last refuge of the trolls in the Hinterlands. If they wanted to find the trolls, they would have to go there.
However, Orgrim's keen instincts picked up that something wasn't quite right.
According to trolls who had already joined the Horde, trolls were a highly fertile species. Given that the Hinterlands were a natural sanctuary, untouched by humans and elves, it was strange that trolls weren't thriving everywhere.
Instead, they seemed concentrated in a narrow gorge, an odd scenario no matter how you looked at it.
Still, Orgrim never suspected a trap by the Alliance. Since their entry into the Hinterlands, they hadn't seen a single trace of the Alliance.
Orgrim even believed they had outmaneuvered them. He assumed perhaps the trolls had suffered some disaster, or that the majority of them had migrated elsewhere.
Regardless, Orgrim was determined to visit Darkwhisper Gorge.
Even if the trolls there weren't numerous enough to reinforce the Horde's strength, they could at least serve as guides through the forest.
After confirming that trolls only existed in Darkwhisper Gorge, the Horde army finally began its march in that direction.
Darkwhisper Gorge was not wide; on the contrary, it was narrow and constricted.
Although intelligence suggested it was the likeliest troll hideout, there was no sign of troll habitation at the gorge's entrance.
Yet, Orgrim grew even more convinced this was where the trolls were hiding.
The Hinterlands were ideal troll territory, yet no trolls were found elsewhere.
Orgrim reasoned that the trolls must have been forced to abandon their broader territory and gone into hiding, most likely due to pressure from the Alliance.
If the trolls were indeed in seclusion, then it made sense that the gorge's entrance would be carefully concealed.
The gorge earned its name from the thick mists said to be toxic that filled its depths, making it inhospitable to normal wildlife.
The Alliance would naturally assume no trolls could survive there.
But once Orgrim entered the gorge, he realized the mist near the entrance was merely ordinary water vapor, completely harmless.
He smugly concluded this was a clever disguise crafted by the trolls to keep outsiders away.
As he ventured deeper, he found numerous troll totems and markings along the way, even footprints. All signs suggested that trolls did live in this gorge.
However, when he finally passed through the narrow entrance and reached the wide-open valley beyond, where he had imagined a thriving troll settlement, he was met with a vast, barren plain.
Only dead trees and dry grass covered the land, and not a single trace of a troll could be seen.
At the center of the empty plain stood a conspicuously tall, dead tree. A patch of its bark had been stripped away, revealing something carved into the trunk.
At this point, Orgrim knew something was very wrong. The supposed troll signs on the way in were likely planted, ait to lure them into a trap.
Still, he clung to a final thread of hope, perhaps the carving on the tree held some message left by the trolls.
He decided to inspect it personally. But fearing a trap, he brought Gul'dan with him.
The traitorous warlock who had betrayed the orcs, Orgrim didn't dare leave him back in the Arathi Highlands unsupervised.
So, he had brought him along to the Hinterlands, keeping him under close watch.
Now, Gul'dan might prove useful. If danger arose, a powerful warlock like him would fare better than a warrior like Orgrim.
Protected by his personal guard, Orgrim and Gul'dan broke from the main army and approached the tree.
Even before reaching it, Orgrim could tell this carving wasn't left by trolls.
The stripped bark revealed orcish writing, how could trolls in the Hinterlands possibly know the orcish language?
And the words carved into the wood made Orgrim's face turn pale.
"Orgrim dies beneath this tree."
"Everyone retreat! Get out of the gorge, now!" Orgrim shouted the order without hesitation.
Only one enemy could have known his name and carved such a message here, their greatest adversary, the Alliance.
Orgrim was almost certain it was the work of the most cunning commander among them.
The one who had cost the Horde the red dragons, who had thwarted their control of the Arathi Highlands.
The human mage who had stood alone in Stormwind and delayed them for hours, Sandor Maverick .
Orgrim reacted swiftly, and the orcs carried out his command with determination. But they had barely taken a few steps when a deafening explosion shattered all hope.
The entrance to Darkwhisper Gorge collapsed with the blast.
