Chapter 22: Echoes of Tragedy
November 9th – It was Thursday morning. Evan woke suddenly, at 0400 with his scar burning. He quickly wrote down what he remembered and got ready for the day. He told his teammates he had another "premonition" and asked what they thought he should do. The girls replied that he should talk to the commander as soon as possible. At revelry, the Sergeants scoffed at him when they heard he "had a premonition", but rethought the issue when Evan's teammates reported the consequence of the last premonition – Scotton. At breakfast, one of the Sergeants escorted him to the Commander at the Officers Table, and requested a brief meeting of a sensitive nature. The Commander met with Evan after breakfast. "Commander. Thank you for allowing me to meet with you." Evan began. "What can I do for you Midshipman? The Sergeant mentioned something of a sensitive nature."
"Yes sir. You may not believe what I am about to say, sir, but I ask you hear me out." "That is not a very promising opening, Midshipman." The Commander said. "I know sir. It is hard for me to believe sometimes. Sir, I occasionally get these headaches and flashes of things happening. Sometimes, I find out that what I saw in the flashes actually did occur that day or a day later. Sir – I had one of those happen to me early this morning." "What kind of wool are you trying to pull over my eyes, Midshipman. Are you trying to get out of training today? Or are you trying to get out of the military totally, because that is where this is quickly leading, Midshipman" the Commander said heatedly. "No sir, that is not the case at all, sir! I want to stay in the military! I want to continue my training, sir! But it is imperative you at least listen to what I have to say. Please!" Evan begged. The Commander was unsure of what to think.
"Sir, a few nights ago, October 31st, I had pain at 2200. The next morning, we heard about "an explosion" in Scotton. Early this morning, I woke up with pain and flashes of things happening today, on Gandy Street in Exeter. I can't explain how I know – they were just flashes. In one of my flashes I saw people in dark costumes with what looked like white hockey masks, like the horror movie Friday the 13th", Evan exclaimed. Upon hearing that description, the Commander, a squib, looked sharply at Evan.
"Have you ever seen people dressed like that in the past?" the Commander asked curiously. "The day my parents were killed sir. I saw people dressed the same way the day my parents were killed, when I was little. Bolts of green light shot from their little sticks and hit so many people, including my mother and father. My mom…..my mom fell on me, hiding me from them. Then they disappeared!" he replied.
The Commander expressed his sympathy, and then asked if Evan knew what time of day the supposed attack would occur. "Well, sir. It was daytime and the street was teaming with visitors. That's all I know." Evan replied. The Commander then thanked Evan, dismissed him, and called the Officer on Duty of the Royal Marine Readiness Unit on base, General Black. He relayed that he had been given information of a possible attack in Exeter, on Gandy Street by an, as yet unverifiable and possibly unreliable source. The Commander however, felt that it would be prudent to put a small undercover surveillance and response unit on the street before lunchtime as a precaution. Gandy Street is a narrow street lined with various retail stores, and would be crowded the most during the lunch hour. The commander told the unit leader to consider this an exercise for a domestic terrorism scenario, but to be prepared.
Later that day, unbeknownst to Evan and his teammates, 10 men dressed in black robes and white masks appeared in the middle of Gandy Street at 12:15 – the height of lunchtime traffic, and started to fire off what looked like green and red laser blasts (spells). They were immediately targeted, shot and killed within less than one minute by the Royal Marines Readiness Unit. Unfortunately, several civilians had already fallen to these blasts. Everything was videotaped by the surveillance team, even the appearance of a team of red-robed people.
The Royal Marine Readiness Unit had been in the process of lining up the dead civilians and perpetrators at the time, and photographing them when red-robed people (Aurors and Obliviators) showed up. Hearing the popping sound (of apparition) similar to that when the black-robed men appeared, the Readiness Unit immediately dropped into crouches, aimed their weapons at the newcomers, and called for their immediate surrender. Some of the red-robed people popped back out; while three fired off red-colored blasts (stunners) and were immediately shot and killed by the soldiers.
