Chapter 37: Chapter 37: The Trio Are Attacked
With the group arrangement made for when we would split up, we continued to walk down the dark path with only lanterns for light. As we passed dangerous plants Hagrid would pause our walking to explain what they were and what to do if we touched them, most responses being hoping not to die while a few were to cast fire at them to make them loosen their hold.
Along our journey, we saw nothing, no creatures or even signs of creatures which made the atmosphere even spookier for those easily scared like the girls or the Weasley. It wasn't till the pool of unicorn blood Hagrid was looking for that the forest scenery changed, the pool was in a small clearing.
"It looks like some fresh pools have joined the old one," Hagrid said while crouching to dab his fingers into the silver liquid, "It's still warm so the poor thing is still close. You three and fang search along that path and we shall head on this one." The half-giant said while pointing towards the paths.
After an apprehensive few moments, the trio of Harry, Grace and Ron left down the path with the cowardly Fang leading them. "Hagrid, why would anyone attack a unicorn? I mean from what I understand the only useful parts that could be harvested fall off naturally so there would be little point hunting such an elusive creature." Daphne asked as we started down our path away from the trio.
"You are indeed right. The useful parts to us folk do fall off naturally; however, there is a part that is very useful to the darker folk." Hagrid said before pausing and checking the surroundings, "The unicorns have a rare gift, you see. Their blood can heal; even if a person is at death's door, it will bring them back to normal health. However, if one tries to take the blood forcefully, a powerful curse falls onto whoever drinks it."
This information was not surprising to me but for Daphne, it was very shocking, "So you're saying that someone is trying to live longer by preying on an innocent creature?" The silence that followed that statement lasted a while as Hagrid chose to leave the question unanswered.
We continued walking for about 20 minutes before Hagrid talked again, "It seems the unicorn did not come in this direction when it fled. Let us go back and find out if the others had any luck." It was the same creatureless forest we walked along on the way back as it seemed the creatures were sensitive to my aura, they either fled from it or hid well enough that even Hagrid who has traversed these woods couldn't spot them.
As we neared the fork where the groups split we heard a girl's scream along with a jet of light being sent into the sky a way off from us, Hagrid took off quickly towards the light as Daphne and I tried to keep up with his large gate.
It didn't take long for Hagrid to get up to speed and leave us behind which shocked me greatly since I would never have believed he could move that fast at his size. He was like a charging rhino, knocking bushes and small trees aside as he ran at top speed towards the signal.
He reached it much before us, but we had to slow considerably when Hagrid got too far ahead as the path he cut quickly collapsed and we had to traverse over the roots of trees and rocks without tripping. When Daphne and I eventually reached the trio, panting with the fast and tricky movement to get to them, we found that Ron had suffered a broken arm while Grace was bleeding from a wound on her head. The saviour boy was the worst off as his wand arm was twisted at an odd angle with the bone visibly sticking out.
"If you could help me lift them to the edge of the forest, I have already called for McGonagall and Pomfrey. They will be there when we get there," Hagrid said before crudely setting Harry's arm and wrapping the wound in bandages to slow the bleeding. Daphne quickly cast a levitation charm, lifting Ron and Grace into the air while I waved my wand casting spells to staunch the bleeding of the potters along with setting Ron's arm into place.
I had become well-versed in stopping the bleeding but I did not have access to the medical spells needed to properly fix the broken bones, that is because a law was passed that locked medical spells behind the Healer's examination and vow. Hagrid lead the way sweeping any foliage aside with his right hand while cradling Harry like a baby with his other.
When we reached the edge of the forest we could see both McGonagall as well as the nurse, they were both wrapped in thick robes which they rushed herein. "What happened in there Hagrid? Were they attacked by the creatures?" McGonagall asked with worry lacing her voice while Pomfrey wasted no time and went directly to the three unconscious students and cast diagnosis charms.
"They should be fine, Mini. The boys have broken bones that were set quickly after being broken while the girl has a minor concussion, I can see the use of magic to stop their bleeding so they have lost minimal blood. They will be fine after a few spells and rest." She got to quickly casting the bone-fixing spell which I tried as hard as I could to memorise however as soon as I heard the spell it seemed to vanish from my mind.
"I assume they have you to thank for stopping their bleeding, Mr Bodewig and Miss Greengrass. I know this was your punishment for being out after curfew but I award you 5 points each for keeping a level head under stressful circumstances." McGonagall said before pulling Hagrid aside to have a private conversation.
