Chapter 119: Chapter -118 Truly the disciplinary committee.
Chapter 118.
As the new semester began, the young wizards were full of confidence, believing they could surpass the Disciplinary Team. Each of their houses had so many members, while the Disciplinary Team had only a few. However, they soon realized they were very wrong.
In Charms class, Hermione Granger, miss knows-it-all, answered nearly every question Professor Flitwick posed, much to his delight, as he endlessly awarded points to her. In Transfiguration class, it was still Hermione, who handled all of Professor McGonagall's questions and demonstrations with ease.
Thankfully, McGonagall wasn't as extravagant with the points as Flitwick.
In Potions class, Potter and Malfoy competed against each other, stealing points from Professor Snape.
That was bad enough, but Snape's deductions from Gryffindor made it a bit excessive. Nonetheless, the young wizards did not dare question Professor Snape's decisions.
In Herbology, even the most overlooked member of the Disciplinary Team, Neville, constantly racked up points from Professor Sprout.
Of course, there was also a little red head named Ron, who seemed to effortlessly earn points in every subject. As for Dudley, he hardly answered anything this year, yet if any professor called on him, he would answer precisely and without fail. So far, he had not encountered anything he couldn't do.
Even the seemingly dull History of Magic class, which could lull anyone to sleep, fell under their spell.
Professor Binns almost became a dedicated point provider for the Disciplinary Team, endlessly supplying them with points.
In just a few days, the Disciplinary Team had accumulated points surpassing the total of the other four houses combined, crushing the young wizards with an overwhelming lead.
The Disciplinary Team was truly terrifying!
This made the young wizards, who already had a favorable impression of the Disciplinary Team, increasingly envious. This continued until Friday.
On Friday, Gryffindor and Slytherin attended Defense Against the Dark Arts class together — it was the first session of the semester.
Inside the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, most of the leftover garlic smell from last semester had been cleared, but it still lingered faintly if one smelled intently. No one knew what brand of garlic Quirrell used that could leave such a lasting smell.
"How about another game of Gwent?" suggested a Gryffindor.
Another Gryffindor, although tempted by the suggestion, declined. "No, no, Professor Lockhart will be here soon, and we won't have enough time for another round."
Now, Gwent had replaced Wizard's Chess and was subtly beginning to surpass Quidditch, becoming the favorite pastime of the young wizards. It's a joy that even adults couldn't resist, let alone children.
Nearly everyone at Hogwarts was a card player, and almost everyone had a trick or two up their sleeves, even Slytherin was no exception.
"I promise to help Gryffindor earn points, don't worry, I've memorized all the methods Lockhart uses to defeat enemies. This time, I won't let certain people show off!" said the confident Gryffindor while glancing toward where Dudley and the others were sitting.
Other subjects might be okay, but in Defense Against the Dark Arts, I absolutely will not lose.
"Given the disparity, let's skip it. If we have time, let's just play another round of Gwent." The previously speaking Gryffindor murmured quietly and turned to play cards with others.
Actually, he had been full of confidence until he was thoroughly outmatched by Neville's extensive knowledge in Herbology. After that, he decisively gave up. If even the inconspicuous Neville surpassed him, how could he compete with the others?
Anyway, he was just a little background character; what did it matter who was strong or not?
Lying flat felt so comfortable.
"Here he comes, Professor Lockhart is coming." Someone outside shouted, causing the haphazardly seated young wizards to hurriedly return to their places, waiting for their new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.
It was unclear whether Lockhart intended to leave a good impression during the first class, but today his outfit was notably less flamboyant than usual; it was merely a rather plain, gaudy light pink attire, in his view.
Lockhart entered the classroom, saw the neatly seated young wizards, smiled with satisfaction, and cleared his throat. He picked up a copy of "Gadding with Ghouls" and held it up, showcasing the cover with his winking photo.
"I," he pointed vigorously to the photo of himself, displaying a dazzling smile: "Gilderoy Lockhart, Third Class Order of Merlin, Honorary Member of the Society for the Protection of Wizards Against Dark Arts, five-time winner of the 'Witch Weekly' Most Charming Smile Award — but I don't go around boasting about that; I did not rely on my smile to drive away the banshee!"
He said he wouldn't hang on his lips, but in reality, he listed a long string of titles like a little wizard announcing a menu.
"I see you all bought my complete works. Good. I think we should start with a little quiz today."
Upon hearing Lockhart mention a quiz, the Gryffindor student who had been eager to score beamed with excitement.
"Don't be afraid. It's just to see how much you've read and understood."
Lockhart said as he pulled out a large stack of papers. It was clear that the "little quiz" he referred to was a written test, and soon, he distributed the test papers, returning to the podium, hands resting on the desk: "I'm giving you thirty minutes. I will give extra points to the best answers!"
This time, I, Hanel Watt, had it in the bag.
I had memorized all of Professor Lockhart's Wizardry techniques; I am going to get a perfect score.
Feeling confident, Watt opened the test paper and picked up his pen.
One minute later, he was still in the same position with the pen.
Three minutes later, still in the same position with the pen.
Another five minutes passed, and he gave up thinking.
The questions on the paper were indeed related to Lockhart, but not at all what he had imagined about
Defense Against the Dark Arts: 1. What is Gilderoy Lockhart's favorite color? 2. What is Gilderoy Lockhart's secret ambition? 3. What do you think is Gilderoy Lockhart's greatest achievement so far? 4. What day is Gilderoy Lockhart's birthday? What is his ideal birthday gift?
What the hell are these questions? Are they related to Defense Against the Dark Arts?
Watt was so angry that he almost wanted to eat the paper.
But then he thought twice and wasn't that mad anymore.
'I don't believe I can't answer these; the discipline team can? If you all can get full marks, I'll eat this desk with salt on it.'
Half an hour later, Lockhart collected the test papers and started flipping through them in front of the class.
"Tsk tsk. What a disappointment, hardly anyone remembers my favorite color; I mentioned it in 'Year with the Yeti.'"
Lockhart seemed quite dissatisfied with the results but quickly shifted to surprise: "What amazed me is that one paper got a perfect score, almost all questions were answered correctly! Let's see which little wizard is so brilliant."
When Lockhart saw the name on the paper, he exclaimed even more excitedly.
"Dudley? Dursley."
I'm impressed, seriously impressed!
