Harry Potter Breaking Free

Chapter 43: Strained Connection

Fleur noticed Harry's discomfort at her bitchy remarks, but she couldn't seem to help herself. A pit of extreme resentment towards the boy's magic just wouldn't allow her to back off like she wanted to. Instead, she found herself launching more and more abuse at the boy every time she saw him. It appeared that today would be no exception. "I came in here to read a book in peace, 'Arry... I had no desire to rub up against you like a lover would."

As Fleur continued to chip away at him, Harry made it to the door, so he didn't bother turning around when he replied to her abuse. "I... I have no desire to infringe upon your personal space Fleur... It's a very difficult situation for me as well, and you're aware of that..."

When he didn't hear an acid laced response, Harry decided that this was as close to a victory as he was ever going to get… He left the room without ever looking back.

As Harry left the room to free himself from her bitchy, poisonous, endlessly rude commentary, Fleur shoved a pillow against her face and then punched that pillow with her other hand. "What the Hell is wrong with me?!" Fleur had asked the question to a completely empty room. No answers were forthcoming...

...

Gods that had sucked. Harry'd run into Fleur in the Entry Hall several times during the last few weeks and yet it wasn't getting any easier. After the fact, he was always left wondering if Fleur was so used to default attention from people because of her beauty that she'd never been forced to develop any variety of social skills.

One thing that Harry could see for sure was that Fleur was extremely frustrated both by him and her own reaction to him. On a regular basis it looked like she wanted to just tie him down and study him like a specimen or something. It wasn't her curiosity that he had a problem with, but he wasn't a fan of how she continuously refused to just be straightforward and talk to him. Under those circumstances, Harry didn't feel like being under that particular microscope.

Of course, Harry would've liked to be Fleur's friend, but he refused to enslave himself to her merely for the pleasure of her company...

After locating Appoline in the Main Lounge of the house, Harry took a seat on the couch to her right, and then picked up the coffee that was waiting for him.

"Good afternoon 'Arry," Appoline exclaimed happily, as she drank her own exceptionally sweet coffee. "Have you been working on the exercises we talked about?"

"Yes I have," replied Harry calmly. "I've started circulating my aura shroud around in various ways. I can make it move around my body as if I'm the center of a vortex, I can manually direct my magic closer to me for about a minute, and I can become the focal point of a figure eight or many figure eights. This last one drastically increases my level of information gathering, because I'm directly bringing the magic back through my body. Actually it's somewhat similar to what you Veela do. The Primary difference between me and a Veela is that even as I manually channel the magic back through my body my core is violently pushing it back away. It feels as if I'm having an arm wrestle with my core and my core is relentless... It never quits. Eventually my focus comes to an end and my magic is violently blasted out in every direction."

Appoline nodded and patted Harry's arm consolingly. "So the problem is not your magic control. You are capable of manually manipulating your magic to an extent that even Dumbledore would be jealous of. The problem, as has always been the case, is your core. Your core still believes it needs to do what it is doing for your very survival. Your core is attached to your subconscious mind. I fear you'll need to master the memories of even your years as a toddler. I know that Dumbledore feared you would hurt yourself by accessing those memories and that is in fact a possibility. That is where I come in. I will use my Veela nature to assist you. Are you staying here tonight like we planned?"

"Yes. I already made the arrangements with Poppy and informed Dumbledore," Harry explained with a wry smile on his face. "I appreciate you making space for me."

"Nonsense. Gabrielle will be thrilled to have you," Appoline replied, with a mischievous grin. Then her face softened as she continued. "As will I. I suggest you take off the Translation Bracelet at some point today to see how much of the French language you can take in. The bracelet doesn't teach you anything, it just changes what you hear."

Harry smiled at that and stuck out his arm to show Appoline his new and improved Runic bracelet. "I actually altered the bracelet just a few days after you gave it to me, Appoline. I apologize for meddling with such a wonderful gift, but to leave it the way it was felt like an opportunity wasted. Now the bracelet only translates words that I don't know. It also conveys meaning and context and warms up slightly while doing so. I'd wager I already understand one quarter of the French language, and I'm improving daily."
