Harry Potter: Becoming a Study God

Chapter 193: Chapter 193: Nirvana

Wade noticed that Regulus, in this final testament, mentioned Voldemort's greatest secret—the Horcrux.

He had never discussed this subject with Dumbledore before.

Even someone like Slughorn, upon hearing a student talk about Horcruxes, would have been utterly frightened and panicked.

Perhaps Dumbledore had gleaned some insight from Wade's earlier experience at the Gaunt shack… Whether or not he had already suspected the existence of Horcruxes, this would undoubtedly confirm it.

At the same time, Dumbledore seemed to have arrived at the same realization.

"Horcrux…"

He sighed deeply and said to Wade:

"I have wondered many times what allows Voldemort to persist in his existence. There are several types of magic that can achieve such a feat. But in the end, he chose the most evil and dangerous of them all—Horcrux."

Wade remarked, "It sounds like it's connected to the soul."

"Voldemort split his soul."

Dumbledore made no effort to obscure the truth. He said:

"He tore apart a portion of his soul and sealed it inside an object, which then became what is called a Horcrux."

"This way, even if he suffers mortal harm, he cannot die, as a part of his soul remains undamaged, lingering in this world, and waiting for a chance to resurrect."

"But existing in this state is a fate worse than death."

"If he cannot revive, he is neither accepted by the realm of the dead nor able to truly remain among the living.

The remnants of his soul will weaken over time, and they will eventually forget even their identity and dissolve into nothingness under endless torment."

After finishing, he observed his student, who nodded slightly and showed no hint of interest in the idea of Horcruxes.

Dumbledore was not surprised.

He stated plainly, "When you destroyed the Gaunt shack with Fiendfyre, a sinister shadow emerged from the flames."

"Yes."

Dumbledore nodded, affirming what was left unsaid:

"If my guess is correct, that must have been one of Voldemort's Horcruxes. Quite cunning… He hid a fragment of his soul in a derelict ruin that no one would pay attention to."

Wade added, "In fact, that wasn't the first time we encountered such an experience."

Dumbledore paused for a moment, then said.

"…It wasn't?"

"I once found an old diadem in the Room of Requirement at school."

"A diadem?"

"Yes. It resembled Ravenclaw's diadem, but it was imbued with a dark and evil magic. Remus, my friends, and I destroyed it in a cave with Fiendfyre."

Now that Dumbledore had confirmed Wade's seemingly 'prophetic' abilities, Wade no longer felt the need to concoct excuses for his discoveries. He skipped over the backstory and directly described the events.

Upon hearing about the shadowy figure destroyed in the flames, Dumbledore fell silent for a long time.

Meanwhile, the green potion in the stone basin began slowly refilling. If the locket were still inside, only a faint glint of gold would be visible now.

"Let's head back; Remus is likely growing impatient," Dumbledore finally said.

The two boarded the small, enchanted boat, which automatically began its return journey. The distant light on the shore grew steadily larger in their view.

"Wade, do not speak to anyone about the Horcruxes."

"Yes, Professor."

"Is the diadem still with you?"

"I'll deliver it to you once we're back at school," Wade replied. "But it's already been burned by Fiendfyre, so it might not yield anything useful."

"Every spell leaves traces of magic," Dumbledore said. "I suppose you found something unusual at the Gaunt house as well? Aside from Mikael."

"A ring, Professor," Wade admitted. "But I believe it's better if I keep it in my possession."

Dumbledore paused, his expression briefly startled. His eyes widened slightly, and for a moment, it seemed he wanted to say something.

But when he met Wade's bright gray eyes, he swallowed his words.

"All right… if you say so… I trust you have your reasons…"

Dumbledore murmured, his fingers trembling slightly before he clasped them tightly together.

The boat bumped against the shore with a soft thud.

Lupin reached out, pulling Wade onto the shore. He gave him a quick once-over with his eyes, and upon seeing that both of them were unharmed, he exhaled in relief.

"You were gone for quite some time… Did you find anything?"

"Yes, some rather… significant findings." Dumbledore glanced briefly at Sirius, who stood not far away.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the golden locket.

"Professor, Remus," Wade suddenly said, "I'd like to return to school now, if that's all right."

Lupin looked surprised. "Is something urgent?"

"No, not exactly…" Wade hesitated, then glanced at Dumbledore. "Maybe Fawkes could bring Harry over?"

When Sirius learns the truth, would he be overwhelmed with grief for Regulus?

Wade guessed he would.

Sirius, a true Gryffindor, was a man of intense and pure emotions. When he hated someone, he wished them dead; when he cared for someone, he would go to any lengths for them.

But Wade didn't want to witness that scene.

He didn't want to see a man at his most vulnerable and broken.

For offering comfort, Lupin or Harry would be far more suitable than him.

But Dumbledore shook his head.

"No. If Harry is here, he would force himself to appear strong. But today, Sirius needs an environment where he is… allowed to be weak."

"I understand," Wade replied.

Without any visible action from Dumbledore, Fawkes suddenly appeared.

It landed on Wade's shoulder, and with a beat of its wings, a few feathers floated to the ground.

Wade caught one reflexively and then said farewell to Lupin: "Professor Dumbledore will explain everything, Remus. If you need help… I'm always available."

"All right, thank you," Lupin said, still bewildered.

He watched as Wade and Fawkes vanished in a blaze of gold and crimson light.

---

A flash of fire later, Wade found himself back at school.

More precisely, in Dumbledore's office.

Fawkes landed sluggishly on its gilded perch, and looked unusually fatigued. It let out a faint, strained cry, and its eyes were listless.

Softly, Wade asked, "You're about to undergo your rebirth, aren't you?"

Fawkes didn't respond.

It tilted its head back, and suddenly its entire body ignited in flames. With a sharp, piercing screech, the phoenix collapsed into a pile of gray ash that scattered to the floor.

The sound seemed to rouse the slumbering portraits of former headmasters. Around the office, several of them stirred.

A gaunt, stern-looking headmaster shouted, "Hey, student! How did you get in here? This is the headmaster's office—unauthorized entry is forbidden! You'd better leave immediately!"

The other portraits nodded in agreement.

"And why do you think I'm here?" Wade retorted. "Obviously, it's because Dumbledore allowed it. What other reason could there be?"

Hearing this, the other headmasters burst into laughter, jeering at the gaunt headmaster and mocking his lack of sense.

Clearly, this particular portrait was highly irritating.

Wade glanced at the name on the frame: Phineas Nigellus Black.

The most unpopular headmaster in Hogwarts history—and the great-great-grandfather of both Sirius and Regulus Black.

Wade sat cross-legged next to the pile of ashes, waiting for Fawkes to be reborn.

Phineas squinted his narrow eyes at him with curiosity. "Dumbledore says you're the most exceptional Ravenclaw student of the past century. Is that true? What grand achievements have you accomplished?"

His tone was flippant and arrogant. Wade raised an eyebrow and turned his head slightly to look at him.

Phineas's previously lazy expression immediately shifted. He frowned, and said dissatisfiedly: "Why does it feel like you're pitying me?"

"Why would he?" another portrait, a female headmistress, interjected. "Phineas, stop giving the student a hard time!"

But Phineas stepped into the adjacent portrait, shoving the older headmaster depicted there aside.

"Really!" the elderly headmaster huffed indignantly as he adjusted his hat.

Phineas moved to a portrait directly opposite Wade and leaned on the frame, and asked, "Your little outing today… it wouldn't have anything to do with my useless great-grandson, would it?"

Wade answered calmly, "No, it's about another one."

"What?" Phineas looked confused.

"Regulus Black," Wade said. "We found his body."

"Regulus?"

The flippant expression vanished from Phineas's face, replaced by silence. The other portraits also fell quiet.

They collectively seemed to hold their breath—if they could breathe at all—and said nothing.

Suddenly, the pile of ashes shifted. A small, wrinkled chick poked its head out.

The newborn phoenix, bald and entirely unremarkable in appearance, shuffled its frail, skeletal wings, and explored its surroundings in the ashes.

Wade couldn't help but wonder: Does this phoenix retain its previous memories? Is it still the same phoenix as before?

"How should I take care of it?" he asked the surrounding portraits. "Does it need to eat something?"

After a pause, one of the older portraits spoke up.

"Dumbledore anticipated its rebirth and prepared accordingly—see that green crystal vial on the cabinet? Just feed it three drops of the potion inside."

Following the instructions, Wade located the vial. It was placed beside Fawkes's golden stand, easy to spot.

He uncorked the vial and caught a faint scent of bamboo leaves. He paused for a moment before carefully feeding three drops of the potion to the tiny chick.

Like all newly hatched birds, it opened its beak wide to receive the food, as if its stomach was a bottomless pit.

Wade only fed it three drops. Although the chick was still chirping eagerly, he put the vial back.

Phineas watched him finish before slowly asking, "Regulus… how did he die?"

"He died for his inner sense of justice and belief," Wade said. "He gave his life to give others a chance to defeat Voldemort."

After a moment, Phineas let out a few harsh, mocking laughs.

"Sounds like he's not much of a Black… More like a foolish Gryffindor!"

No sooner had he finished speaking than Phineas stomped off from the portrait, leaving nothing but blank space in the frame.

Wade didn't linger either.

He took out the box containing the Diadem from his bag—after deciding to invite Dumbledore to the cave, he had borrowed the Diadem from the Room of Requirement again, and this time, Barnabas hadn't stopped him.

Wade placed the Diadem on an empty table and said to the portrait beside him, "This is for Professor Dumbledore. Please let him know when he returns."

"Understood," the portrait replied.

Another headmaster in a nearby portrait muttered in dissatisfaction, "These students nowadays… giving orders to the headmasters!"

Wade ignored him.

He opened the door and stepped out of the headmaster's office.

It was already evening, and students returning from Hogsmeade village were trickling back.

Wade stood at a height and easily spotted two students hiding in a corner, pressed closely together. The girl was giggling, while the boy leaned in to kiss her cheek.

Those two were Michael and Padma.

Padma was quite shy, but Michael seemed entirely at ease, like a seasoned charmer.

He moved like a dragonfly skimming the surface of water—getting close, touching, pulling back slightly, whispering a few words, then leaning in again.

They were close, perfectly in tune with one another.

Wade couldn't help but smile, then found himself thinking that these kids were a bit too mature.

In his mind, he still considered everyone around him to be like sixth-grade elementary school students.

He knew some people called him old-fashioned behind his back, but he didn't mind.

Wade walked down the spiral staircase, thinking about the events of the day.

His candid conversation with Dumbledore… the Inferi… and the two Black brothers.

And the phoenix's rebirth.

Although phoenixes in this magical world are not as powerful and all-knowing as the legends, their tears can heal most injuries, including bites from the basilisk's fangs; and their feathers have various wonderful uses.

Wade planned to first brew a few bottles of healing potions, while the rest could be used for alchemy. He was grateful for Fawkes' generosity, as he had given him enough feathers.

"Mr. Grey... Wade Grey..."

As Wade was heading back to the Room of Requirement along the corridor, he suddenly heard a thin voice calling his name.

He turned around and saw it was Maggie.

Maggie was a house-elf skilled in cooking, and also responsible for cleaning the Slytherin common room and dormitories.

"Maggie?" Wade walked over and squatted down. "What do you want to tell me?"

"Wade Grey still doesn't know, something happened in Slytherin today. Maggie wants to tell him."

Maggie clutched its hands, as if ashamed for revealing information about the house.

However, since Wade was also a Hogwarts student and technically its master, Maggie wasn't embarrassed enough to punish itself.

"What do you want to tell me, Maggie?" Wade asked gently.

"In the evening, there weren't many Slytherin students around, most of them went to Hogsmeade."

The house-elf looked up and said in a thin voice:

"Two fat students suddenly attacked others... their magic wasn't very good, and they accidentally conjured up a cow, almost breaking their ribs."

"Did they get the levitation spell wrong?" Wade furrowed his brow. "Isn't that a very rare magic effect?"

Ever since Professor Flitwick mentioned the unfortunate wizard who nearly got crushed by a cow, there had always been some young wizards who didn't believe it and secretly tried it, but such an effect would rarely appear even in ten attempts.

Even if they mispronounced the spell, their magic wouldn't be strong enough to support such a massive translocation.

The house-elf shook its head. "Maggie doesn't understand how it happened, but Maggie also noticed some strange things..."

It suddenly stopped talking, and looked around as if worried someone might be eavesdropping.

Then, it leaned closer to Wade and whispered, "Someone is secretly practicing dark magic... and there's another house-elf from outside in their dormitory..."
