Chapter 191: Chapter 191: The Potion - It Can Only Be Drunk
In the stone basin, there was a full basin of emerald green liquid. The surface was exceptionally smooth.
Dumbledore reached out his hand, but he could not touch the liquid. He used several complex spells to examine it, and silently chanted something under his breath. Only after a long time did he lower his wand.
Looking at Wade, who was waiting quietly beside him, Dumbledore said, "This liquid cannot be separated or scooped out. It cannot be vanished or transfigured with spells, and even hands cannot reach into it…"
"In this case, Wade, what do you think we should do to uncover its hidden secrets?"
Wade replied, "Drink it."
Dumbledore nodded. "Indeed, that's the only way."
"When Regulus tried to attack Sirius earlier, I saw traces of a curse lingering on him, similar to what's in this basin," Dumbledore added.
Wade said softly, "He must have drunk a lot of this liquid before he died."
"Voldemort doesn't see his subordinates as companions, but to treat a young man who was once so loyal to him in this way…"
Dumbledore didn't finish his sentence. He shook his head in pity, conjuring a crystal goblet in his hand.
Wade frowned and said, "You're not planning to drink it yourself, are you, Professor?"
"Oh, I want to see what it does," Dumbledore said casually. "Compared to you, my magic is better equipped to resist the effects of dark magic. Besides, I believe Voldemort wouldn't want to immediately kill anyone who came to this island."
"So you're risking yourself based solely on a guess?" Wade objected. "Why not take the basin along with us and deal with it outside?"
"I'm afraid that's not possible, Wade," Dumbledore replied.
"I think you've also noticed that this basin, the stone pillar, and everything on this island are intricately bound to the entire lake and cave. Unless we have the means to move every object in the cave at once, we can't take the basin out."
"There's no immediate crisis that requires us to sacrifice ourselves to handle this," Wade suggested again. "We could find a criminal to drink it—there are plenty of those in Muggle prisons."
Dumbledore gazed deeply at him.
"That doesn't sound very ethical, does it?" Wade said calmly. "Professor, I'm not as righteous and kind as you are. If someone must be sacrificed, I'd rather choose a criminal than someone I know."
Dumbledore remained silent for a moment before saying, "No… Wade… you think too highly of me."
"I can't say I feel much pity for a death-row inmate. I've seen too many innocent lives brutally harmed… and I've also hurt others myself."
"Even so… I will never believe that sacrificing others for one's own purposes is the right thing to do, not even if that person is a bad one."
"Wade, the weight of a life is far greater than we realize... Even killing for the sake of justice harms the soul."
"Voldemort disregards this entirely. He fears death but considers the lives of others insignificant. But he is wrong, Wade. He made a grave mistake, one so severe that his soul became irreparably fractured."
Wade instinctively thought: wasn't Voldemort's soul fractured because he created Horcruxes?
Then he realized, according to Dumbledore's explanation, even without the Horcruxes, Voldemort's soul had already begun to change when he committed murder—he just hadn't noticed it.
And then he understood: even if Dumbledore might have once considered such actions, he would not do so now.
In Dumbledore's eyes, Wade was a gifted child with unclear boundaries between right and wrong, always on the verge of making a misstep.
The words and actions of those around him would shape his worldview.
And he was watching.
Therefore, Dumbledore would never achieve his goal by sacrificing another person, even if it was the easiest option.
Wade sighed and said, "I understand, but I'd like to try my method. May I?"
"Of course," Dumbledore replied.
Wade opened his bag, and a stern-looking man jumped out.
When he landed, he was only palm-sized, but under the effect of an Engorgement Charm, the puppet quickly "grew" to match Dumbledore's height.
After kneeling on one knee and saluting, the puppet silently took the goblet from Dumbledore's hand and drained it in one gulp.
Wade immediately turned to the stone basin but found that the liquid level hadn't decreased.
Then came the second cup, the third…
After five or six cups, the puppet's movements grew slower and slower. Finally, with a heavy sigh, it said, "This tastes awful..."
As soon as it finished speaking, the puppet lowered its head and its body stiffened like a stone. Wade poked it, but it didn't respond.
The magic rune circuits etched into its body had become a chaotic mess, and even the materials it was made of seemed to have fundamentally changed. Even if Wade reanimated it by injected thoughts, it would never move again.
Wade and Dumbledore exchanged a glance.
Then Wade unfolded his wardrobe space, stepped inside, and returned moments later holding a plump, gray pig.
"A pig?" Dumbledore raised an eyebrow, and asked with some surprise.
"Yes," Wade said. "It's not one of those ordinary warthog breeds Hagrid raises. It's said to have one-sixteenth Tebo blood, so it has faint magical properties."
Wade patted the little pig's ears, which were sharper than those of its kind, and its wide, flat nose. Just as he was about to cast a spell, another thought struck him.
"Professor Dumbledore," Wade said, "Transfiguration can turn a person into an animal. Can it also turn an animal into a person?"
"Hmm?" Dumbledore was caught off guard by the question. After a moment of surprise, he replied, "Magic can indeed do that, but even after transformation, its essence would still remain that of a pig."
"Perfect. If it truly became a person, I'd feel bad about proceeding. But I suspect this potion might require a human—or a humanoid creature—to drink it."
Wade tilted his head toward the pig and said to Dumbledore, "Professor, I'll leave it to you."
"...Alright."
Dumbledore couldn't help but smile wryly but raised his wand as Wade requested and pointed it at the pig.
Under the glow of the spell, the pig struggled in panic. Its limbs elongated, its nose and ears shrank, and its tail gradually disappeared as it spun.
A few seconds later, a fat man in a gray robe sat on the ground.
His bald head was sparsely dotted with yellow hair, and his pair of small black eyes still held a trace of panic. His mouth was wide and flat, as though he could swallow a child in one bite. His limbs were short and stout, and his belly was round and protruding.
He no longer looked like a pig but resembled a toad spirit that had taken human form.
"Huph-aow—"
It opened its mouth and let out a strange cry.
