Chapter 43: The Aurors' Invasion
Susan and Hannah looked back and forth between the two Weasleys and Hermione, and they knew at once they were telling the truth. They were Harry's friends - why would they lie about something like that? Questions buzzed through Susan's mind at one hundred miles per hour. Had a teacher taken him? Had one of the staff finally done what they should have all along and protected him? Who had it been? Had Madam Pomfrey known about it in advance? How had Harry disappeared off the school grounds? Had it been another Portkey?
"Do you know where he is?" Hannah asked softly, breaking Susan out of her thoughts. "Can you tell us anything?"
"We're sorry, but we think it's best that no one else knows," said Hermione, who had finally stopped crying. "We know who took him, but we don't know where he went. All we know is that he's safe. The Aurors aren't going to take him anywhere."
"No, they're not," Ron snarled, anger suddenly taking over his features. "But I'll tell you one thing. I'm going to find them, and give them a piece of my mind."
Susan felt like her heart was going to burst from all the emotion she was feeling. There was pure and utter relief at the fact that Harry was safe, even though she had no idea who had taken him and where he was. But if his friends said he was okay, then he must be. There was fury that the Aurors had invaded the sanctuary of Hogwarts, wanting to attack and antagonize someone who had been through a horrific ordeal and who had done nothing wrong. There was pride in the bravery of Harry's friends, who would go to great, even foolhardy, lengths to defend him. Giving Aurors a piece of their mind was definitely a risky move. It was a surefire way of getting into deep trouble with the law.
As if reading her mind, Hannah said, "Just be careful what you say, Ron. You don't want the Aurors coming after you."
"Do you think I care?" Ron spat, his face red and his eyes on fire. "They have no right coming here and blaming Harry for something he didn't do! Because of them, my best mate is GONE!"
"Shh!" Hermione hissed at him, grabbing his arm. "Don't shout! Ginny and I are coming with you."
"So am I."
The words had come out of Susan's mouth before she even realized she'd said them, but she wouldn't take them back even if she had the chance. She knew it was the right thing to do - for one thing, she was livid as well, and she wanted nothing more than to scream and yell and tell the Aurors to get the hell out of Hogwarts and to never return. But she also wanted to make sure Harry's friends didn't say anything they would regret. This had already been catastrophic enough; there didn't need to be more horrible events.
"Me, too," Hannah said, nodding definitively. "Do you know where they are?"
"I'm not sure, but I'd wager they're near the entrance hall if they just got here," Ron said, and Susan was glad he wasn't arguing with her and Hannah's decision to join them. Time was too much of the essence for that. "Pomfrey said McGonagall sent her a Patronus to warn her they were here."
As quickly as they could, the five angry and devastated students made their way to the entrance hall. As they got closer, they could hear a commotion going on. Indeed, Ron's presumption had been correct.
As they emerged onto the scene, they saw four men in bright red Auror robes confronting some of the staff. Dumbledore was standing there, along with Professors McGonagall, Sprout, and Flitwick. Both sides looked equally furious as they argued with one another.
Susan recognized two of the Aurors. Before she'd started at Hogwarts, her Aunt Amelia had taken her to the Ministry sometimes when she'd needed to do something there. The one with the moustache and short blond hair was Benjamin Williamson, and Susan instantly felt dislike swarm through her body. Even though she'd only met him twice, she thought she had the measure of him.
He was a very unpleasant person, who was all too willing to get into a heated confrontation and who liked nothing better than to run off at the mouth. She could say the same for the Auror standing next to him, whose name was Sam Reynolds. He had brown hair and a beard, and blue eyes that seemed to stare into you and find your weaknesses with just one look. The other two Aurors were ones she didn't know, but the expressions on their faces didn't bode well either.
