Chapter 29: Gwen & Scott
Scott's cheek stung as he stared at Gwen.
He was still in shock.
He reached up until his fingers grazed the spot where she'd slapped him, as if trying to understand what had just happened.
"Gwen, what're you—"
But she didn't give him the chance to finish. Her eyes were blazing and lips trembling with the force of her words.
"HOW CAN YOU BE SO SELFISH──?!"
Her voice shook, not just with anger but with hurt.
"You left us all worried sick, and for what? Hiding out here in Meteor City, streaming like nothing's wrong? Do you know what it's been like back home?"
Scott opened his mouth, but she pressed on with an even stronger, louder voice.
"I get it, okay? You're in pain. I'm not heartless, I know what losing someone feels like. But you can't just vanish and pretend none of us exist. You're only hurting yourself—and us!"
Her fists balled, and before he could react, she was pounding them against his chest, venting days of frustration.
"All I wanted was a text, Scott. Just one message, something I could tell my mom so she wouldn't be pacing around the house like a ghost! She's barely eating, you know that? Doesn't she mean anything to you? Do we mean anything to you?"
Scott closed his eyes to think. "Gwen, I…"
Gwen bit her lip, holding back tears as she met his eyes.
"Don't I… mean anything to you?"
A quick flash of emotion showed on his face, and he looked away, unable to keep eye contact with her.
She shook her head as her eyes filled with angry tears.
"Of course. I should've known. You always have some excuse, don't you? Let's hear it, smart guy. Go ahead, tell me why hurting us was necessary this time."
But instead of some flimsy excuse, he simply sighed and looked up at her as his face softened.
"I'm sorry, Gwen…"
He spoke very quietly.
"I didn't mean to make you feel that way. And I didn't think about what Tess must be going through, or what this would do to you. It was stupid. Immature."
Gwen took a step back, stunned.
She'd been ready to argue, to go after him until he finally understood how much he had hurt her—but his quiet apology caught her off guard. She clenched her fists, struggling with the urge to keep arguing and keep him on edge.
『Why can't he just shout back…?』
She gritted her teeth in silent frustration.
『Why does he have to be this way…?』
Her throat felt tight, but her words still came out sharp.
"Yeah, it was. You know it's pathetic, right? All this running away, moping around—Maya's still making you look like a fool, even when you're not with her."
She turned on her heel and started to storm off, angry tears slipping down her cheeks.
She hated that he'd apologized so easily, that he hadn't fought back.
Somehow, it felt worse.
"Gwen, wait."
She froze, shoulders stiff, but she didn't look back.
"Let me at least give you a ride. I'll take us to my Airbnb. I still have some things to sort out here in Meteor City."
Gwen cast a quick glance over her shoulder.
She was barely looking at him.
"Fine. You can drive, but I'm not staying in any Airbnb with you. My Aunt Grace lives here, I'll call her on the way."
Scott ruffled his bangs, nodding.
"Alright. I'll get the car started."
As he walked by, Gwen clenched her fists and kept her eyes fixed on the ground.
She had wanted this confrontation, but now that it was over, she felt completely drained, unsure of what to say or do next.
━ ━ ━ ━
They sat together in the car, now dressed in casual clothes as the evening sun cast a warm glow over the cityscape.
Scott had just finished explaining the series of choices that brought him to the warehouse—how he'd ended up in Meteor City, followed leads, put the clues together, and why he'd was there with Elena.
Gwen's eyes narrowed, and she raised an eyebrow.
"So you've been hanging out in a four-star hotel, renting an overpriced Airbnb, and still decided to throw in a rental car. All that money, and for what? Heartbreak?"
Scott frowned, glancing sideways at her.
"It's not always about that. Besides, I needed the car to transport Elena here after she passed out. You want me to fly her over, or what?"
Gwen gave him a half-lidded look. "Oh, sure. And it just HAD to be a Porsche?"
Scott grumbled and looked out the window as the fields rolled by.
"Can't a guy enjoy himself once in a while? It's not like I get to use my driver's license every day."
They fell into a comfortable silence as they continued down the peaceful evening road.
━ ━ ━ ━
As they drove along the winding roads through the city, Gwen leaned against the car door with her arms crossed, sneaking quick glances at Scott whenever she thought he wasn't looking. She found herself staring at his hair, which had grown a little longer since she'd last seen him—it now brushed just above the bridge of his nose, giving him a softer look than before.
She couldn't help but smile a little, just for a second.
Scott glanced over, catching her mid-look.
Her face flushed, and she quickly turned away, clearing her throat a little too loudly.
"Your hair's, um… longer. You should cut it."
That was all she could mutter.
Scott gave a small smirk and shifted his left hand to run his fingers through his hair, while his right hand stayed on the wheel.
"Oh, you noticed?"
Gwen's face went an even deeper shade of red.
"It's not because I've been, you know… looking at you or anything."
She waved a hand as if to brush the thought away.
"I have better things to think about. Just thought you'd want to know before you start looking all emo or something."
Scott chuckled, watching her for a moment longer.
There was something about the way her face caught the breeze and how her hair flowed back with it that made him really notice her softer, more gentle side—the part of Gwen that she didn't always show.
"So, you think I look like that quiet kid meme?"
Gwen rolled her eyes.
"I didn't say that exactly… but if the shoe fits."
She crossed her arms tighter under her breasts.
He smiled, and his face softened as he watched the road ahead.
"Well, if you don't like it, I'll cut it."
Gwen's cheeks flushed once more, and she quickly turned to look out the window.
"You don't have to do that just because I said so. For fuck's sake that's… silly."
Scott just shook his head gently.
"Nah, it's not silly. Your opinion matters to me, Gwen. If it bothers you, I'll cut it."
Gwen pressed her lips together and buried her face partially in her hand as she looked out the window.
"…Whatever."
━ ━ ━ ━
Hours later, they finally pulled up to a spacious, elegant neighborhood.
Gwen pointed to a spot near the driveway.
"Park there. Aunt Grace will probably come out the second we ring the bell."
Scott nodded and pulled into the spot as directed.
As he turned off the engine, Gwen added.
"We'll get our stuff from the car later. Aunt Grace probably has a few things we can change into in the meantime. She's a big spender."
Scott looked up at the house, taking in its neat landscaping and the two luxury cars in the front yard.
"Yeah… I can, uh, see that…"
Gwen pressed the doorbell, and after a few moments, the door swung open. A woman in her early thirties stood there, with blonde hair and bright blue eyes that looked a lot like Tess's.
"Gwen!"
Her face lit up, and without waiting, she pulled Gwen into a tight hug.
Gwen squeezed her eyes shut, her face halfway between warmth and mild annoyance.
Aunt Grace's hugs were famous for being never-ending, and today was no different. The hug seemed to go on forever, leaving Scott awkwardly standing in the back, just watching them. When it finally ended, Gwen gave her aunt a smile, though it looked a little forced.
"It's good to see you again!"
Grace chuckled and, noticing Scott, immediately turned her attention to him, grabbing his cheeks in a playful hold.
"And you must be Scott! I've heard a lot about you from Tess… and Gwen, of course."
"Urm, y-, yeah?"
Scott could barely talk with the way Grace was pinching his cheeks.
Gwen crossed her arms and quickly looked away.
"I haven't said that much."
Grace smiled thoughtfully then placed her slender index finger to her chin.
"Really? I could've sworn you mentioned wanting to go to Metro University because it's close to Scott."
Gwen's face went bright red. "I did not!"
Scott chuckled, giving Grace a polite nod.
"Well, I'd be more than happy to see Gwen around Metro City more often."
"Of course, you would!"
Grace pinched his cheeks again, laughing.
Before anyone else could chime in, two younger kids, a boy and girl, came racing down the stairs, making a beeline for Gwen with excited shouts of "Cousin Gwen!" The two kids hugged her tight, and Gwen grinned as she bent down to embrace them.
"Felix! Felicity! You two are growing up so fast."
Felix grinned and puffed out his chest as if showing off invisible muscles.
"I'm going to get strong enough to marry you one day, Cousin Gwen!"
Felicity rolled her eyes then gave him a little shove.
"As if! Cousin Gwen's into mature men. You know, with big muscles, golden hair and dreamy eyes."
Gwen glanced sideways at Scott, then back at the kids, clearly caught off guard.
"Uh… yeah, sure."
Grace laughed as she motioned them inside.
"Alright, alright, everyone. Let's not keep standing out here in the cold."
━ ━ ━ ━
As they stepped inside, Scott noticed the cozy yet elegant decor. It had a warm and welcoming feel, with just the right amount of luxury. Gwen kept her arms crossed, still looking a little flustered from her aunt's teasing.
Grace turned to them with a smile.
"You two must be hungry. I've already got a bit of dinner prepared, but feel free to freshen up first. Gwen, why don't you show Scott to the guest room?"
Gwen nodded with a bit of a stiff expression.
"Sure. C'mon, Scott."
She gestured for him to follow, and they made their way down the hall.
The moment they were out of earshot, Scott leaned over slightly.
"So, Metro University because of me, huh?"
"It's a good school. Don't flatter yourself."
Gwen's face went red again, but she kept walking, trying to act unfazed.
Scott chuckled, hands in his pockets. "Whatever you say."
When they got to the guest room door, Gwen stopped and turned to him with a tongue-in-cheek look.
It was an oddly cute expression.
Enough that Scott's eyebrows raised a bit.
"I-, Is something wrong?"
"Just so you know, Aunt Grace can get a little… intense with the whole family thing."
"I think I can handle it."
Scott slicked his hair back, leaning against the doorframe.
Gwen gave him a doubtful look, then her expression softened, and a small smile began to form on her lips.
"You better. Or she'll probably hug you to death."
"Wouldn't be the worst way to go."
"Is that so?"
"Yeah, she's pretty woman…"
"Uh-huh, friggin' nerd."
"Have I told you how much I missed you?"
Scott's lips quirked into a smile as he looked down at her.
Gwen huffed, rolling her eyes as she turned to leave.
"Just… don't get any ideas."
But there was a softness in her voice, almost playful, as she headed down the hall with her golden hair and big hips swaying with each step.
Scott watched her go.
『Man, Gwen's a little too thicc these days…』
He smiled weirdly and rubbed his chin.
『And when she was in her super suit… she looked like some kind of hourglass angel or something. Yeahhhh… I think I'll stop here. Why do I have this feeling she's reading my damn mind for Pete's sake…』
He rubbed his face repeatedly, as though he was trying to resist some kind of temptation.
━ ━ ━ ━
The bathroom was filled with steam, and the scent of lavender and soap lingered in the air as Gwen stood under the hot water, letting it run down her back.
She could feel the water touching every part of her thick, curvy body and she couldn't help but feel relaxed.
"Ahhhh~ ♡ So good~ ♡♡…"
The pressure of the shower massaged her skin while she scrubbed herself with a soapy washcloth.
The foam caught the light as she moved the cloth in circular motions over her arms and down to her legs.
She bit her lip, eyes half-lidded, her mind drifting.
All of a sudden she remembered the slap.
『Okay, maybe I overreacted back there…』
Her hands moved mechanically, but her thoughts were miles away, fixated on the small interaction with Scott earlier.
She didn't want to slap him.
『No, not slap him. That was just, sigh~ way too much. Maybe hug him…? YEAH, A HUG!』
Her palm hit her face in disappointment.
"Fuck…"
She realized this too late.
But maybe a hug would also feel… awkward.
Too forward? Would it have been too much too soon?
Gwen couldn't decide.
『God, what if that son of a bitch thinks I'm weird for being this freaked out?』
She sighed and closed her eyes as the water cascaded down her pretty face.
『Whatever, I'll just think about it later. Can't even figure out how I feel about him half the time.』
Her hands moved to her body again, mindlessly rubbing the washcloth over her skin.
『I mean, he really does look good now. Like, a little too good. What the hell happened to the scrawny kid I used to know?』
Her thoughts drifted back to Maya.
『Maya. Yeah, that's the one. Scott's first and only girlfriend. First off, she's an angel. Probably. Everyone says so, even Jake, who I had to bully into telling me anything about their relationship. Bitch for breaking up with him, but still… she was sweet. I can't deny that.』
Gwen paused as she rinsed the washcloth.
『And that's the worst part. That angel part. Ugh, what if I'm like… the anti-angel to her?』
She snorted at the idea, lifting her leg to rinse it off.
『Who am I kidding? Maya probably can't even cook, right? That's an automatic advantage for me, sigh~ if I fuckin' knew how to cook. Wait… can she?』
The thought flickered through her head, and Gwen frowned.
『If she can, then that's just more competition for me.』
She slapped her face lightly with the washcloth, as if to refocus.
『Ugh. I shouldn't even be thinking about this stuff right now. Maya's not even here. Why does this matter?』
She closed her eyes again, stepping out of the shower and grabbing a towel to wrap around herself.
『I haven't even fully reconciled with Scott yet. Have we? I need to know why he did all that stuff, but every time I get close to asking, I just get sidetracked by his dumb face or… whatever.』
Her reflection in the mirror caught her attention, and she looked herself up and down, biting her lip.
『But, at least… maybe he sees me in a more romantic way now. The whole hair thing…』
She flushed deeply.
『The fact he said he'd cut it because I asked… that's so friggin' romantic. Like, seriously? He cares that much?』
Gwen smiled like a smug cat as she nodded slowly.
… Humph!
Her eyes darted downward, unconsciously shifting her weight as she gave her reflection a once-over.
『Maybe I've been wearing these tighter clothes a little too much lately… But, I mean… can you blame me?』
She shifted to the side and her face got warmer.
『Can't hurt to show a little more of my… assets, right? Don't guys like that stuff?』
She flicked her eyes over her body, a subtle curve to her lips as she did.
She looked at her ass.
『Is it perky enough? I'm sure it's big… isn't it?』
Just then, the door to her room creaked open.
Gwen froze and her heart stopped as her towel barely clung to her body.
Her ass…
『Fuckin' hell!』
…was stuck in a position where it stuck out directly towards the door like a swollen peach waiting to be eaten. She hadn't even realized she was standing in the middle of her room like that, and now, Scott had walked in.
"Shit!"
Gwen screamed and spun around.
"What the hell, Scott?!"
Scott, eyes wide, immediately slammed his hands over his face and stumbled backward.
"I didn't see anything! I swear, Gwen! I didn't—"
He parted his fingers a bit to sneak a peek.
"I promise?"
"YOU PERV!"
Gwen's face went redder than it had ever been before as she rushed forward.
She grabbed the nearest thing—a vase—and threw it at him with all the strength she could muster.
"Son of a bitch!"
Gwen screamed, her voice high-pitched with a mash of embarrassment and anger.
Scott slammed the door shut just in time, and the sound of the vase breaking echoed through the house.
From downstairs, Grace called up, "What's all that noise?"
Not wasting a moment, Gwen turned on her heel and shouted back with a laugh of pure vindication, "Scott did it!"
She heard Scott muttering through the door.
"You're insane, Gwen!"
"Scott, dear, you should be careful. We were planning to get some new stuff anyway, but still…"
Grace sounded like she was trying to hide a smile.
Scott groaned from behind the door.
"Sorry, Grace. I'll, uh, fix this…"
Then, from the other side, he added, loudly, "Hey, Gwen?"
"What?"
Gwen answered flatly, still holding the doorframe like a shield on the battlefield.
Still behind the door but definitely hearing him, Scott spoke with that annoying smirk in his voice.
"I didn't know you had a mole on your left butt cheek."
Gwen's eyes went wide.
"YOU FUCKIN' ASSHOLE!"
Her face burned up in pure mortification.
She was already storming out of the room, wrapped in her sweatshirt and plaid skirt, ready to chase him down.
She heard him laughing from far down as he bolted for the stairs.
She wasn't letting him get away with that.
"You! Get back here, Scott!"
"It was an interesting mole…"
"INTERESTING MY ASS!"
"Yes, your ass is indeed interesting, hehe."
With a speed that surprised even her, Gwen bolted after him, her pulse racing.
『This asshole…』
She swore, one more time, that she'd kill him.
