Harem Overlord of the Apocalypse

Chapter 65: Route Part 1

Two days had passed since the attack on Barron's mansion, and there was still no sign of the perpetrators.

Even the Foreign Intelligence Service and the Russian army had failed to find any trace of them — it was as if everyone involved vanished into thin air.

Terrence made his way back to the base, hoping to find clues or regroup.

But when he arrived, all he saw was a smoldering pile of ashes.

The entire base was burned to the ground — most likely to erase all traces of the operation. It was a logical move, but it left him completely on his own.

Not that it was a real problem for someone of his caliber — it would just take him a bit longer to make his way back to the United States.

'I should start walking… It's going to be a long journey,'

That was what he thought — but as he stepped out toward the highway, he spotted a pickup truck speeding down the road.

A group of teenage boys were in the back, laughing loudly and drinking, their breath fogging in the cold night air.

Terrence stepped closer, raising a hand. "Hey! Can I get a ride to the nearest town?" he called out.

The boys looked at him, squinting in confusion. They didn't understand most of what he said, but they caught the word town.

After a moment, one of them raised his bottle and shouted back, "Yeah! Mister, get in!"

Terrence didn't waste a second and climbed into the back.

The boys cheered and raised their bottles again, not thinking much of the stranger joining their wild ride.

The trip started off smooth, the cold wind whipping past as they sped down the highway.

But soon, red lights and flashing signs appeared ahead — a checkpoint.

Before the teens could even react, they looked back and realized Terrence was gone.

It took only a few minutes of walking before he finally reached the town.

He pulled his hood lower over his face and tightened the scarf around his neck.

The first place he went was a local pub.

The building was old and smelled of smoke and spilled beer.

Inside, a few tough looking men played cards under dim lights, while a small TV in the corner played local news.

Terrence sat at the far end of the bar, his back to the wall so he could watch the door.

He ordered a cheap beer, even though he didn't plan to drink it.

His eyes scanned the room, listening carefully to every laugh and whispered complaint.

On the TV, there was no sign of his face. Good — they hadn't identified him yet

Either way, going through the airport was far too risky right now.

Crossing the border on foot was the safer plan , and his best chance to disappear.

'Finland is a safe bet… but Estonia might work too,' he mused, idly turning his glass in his hand as he weighed his options.

'Estonia's border is closer to Moscow — faster to reach, less time exposed on the road. '

He tapped the rim of his glass, his mind already mapping out routes and possible detours .

It was a good thing he had studied Russia's geography in advance.

Suddenly, a large hand clamped down on his shoulder.

Casually, he turned his head.

Two big men stood behind him. Both looked strong and wore thick coats.

Their eyes were suspicious, and they smelled like cheap vodka.

One of the men started speaking to him in fast, angry Russian.

Terrence could only pick out a few words, but he had no idea what they really meant.

"Sorry… I don't understand. Do you speak English?"

The men paused. The taller one leaned closer, his face so close that Terrence could smell his sour breath.

"Americans… what are you doing in this small town?"

"Look," Terrence raised both of his hand in surrender. "I'm just a traveler. Passing through. I don't want any trouble."

The taller man laughed, but there was no warmth in it.

"Traveler? In this weather? At this hour? You think we are stupid?"

"I really don't have time for this,"

Without waiting for a reply, he turned and started walking toward the door after paying his beer.

As he pushed the door open, he heard hurried footsteps behind him.

"Hey! wait!" one of the men shouted.

Terrence didn't stop. He stepped out into the freezing night air, pulling his hood even lower over his face.

The two men burst out of the pub after him. Their heavy boots crunched on the snow as they hurried down the steps, shouting curses in Russian.

Terrence glanced over his shoulder and saw the two men still running after him.

He turned and slipped into a narrow alley between two old brick buildings.

The men shouted and followed without thinking.

But when they turned into the alley, Terrence was no longer there.

They stopped, breathing hard, looking around in confusion.

From the top, Terrence looked down and saw them checking every corner of the alley, cursing and kicking trash cans.

'I almost got robbed,'

There were always people like that in the world, not just here.

People who thought they could bully others for money or respect, just because they had big bodies and a loud voice.

If he wasn't trying so hard to stay under the radar right now, he wouldn't have minded teaching those local thugs a lesson or two.

But he decided to spare them this time.

'Time to go,'

He leaped across snow-covered rooftops, moving like a shadow in the night.

Down below, people walked along the sidewalks, completely unaware of him.

Finally, he reached his destination and saw a small bus stop by the main road

A few people stood there, shivering in the cold and waiting for the next bus.

Terrence climbed down carefully, landing behind an empty building so no one would see him.

Then he walked calmly toward the bus stop, blending in with the waiting passengers.

Buses didn't require ID checks, and most people didn't pay attention to who got on or off.

It was the perfect choice for someone who needed to disappear quietly.

A couple of days of traveling brought him to the border town at last.

Unfortunately, when he opened his eyes, what greeted him was a row of military tanks, all lined up.

There was traffic ahead.

'Did they figure out my identity?' His heart pounded. That would be the worst-case scenario.

He made sure to hide his face during the infiltration, but he couldn't be sure how advanced the government's technology was.

For all he knew, they might have caught something.

'Calm down. It's not certain yet… and the border is just a km away,'

He took a deep breath, forcing himself to think clearly.

With only a few passengers left and soldiers busy up front, he had a small window — literally.

He unlocked the emergency window at the back of the bus and carefully pushed it open.

Cold air rushed inside, biting at his face.

Without hesitating, he slipped through the narrow opening and landed softly on the snowy ground outside.

'Now!'

Right away, he activated his movement technique. Using bursts of wind to increased his speed.

Unfortunately, he didn't take into consideration the drones flying above.

The alarm rang.

Soon, more drones chased him, their motors whirring as they moved to his direction.

'Shit!' he cursed under his breath.

No time to think. He pushed more wind under his feet and sprinted faster, snow exploding behind him with each step.

BOOOOM!

A tank, hidden just beyond the tree line, fired a massive shell straight at him.

The explosion threw him off course, blasting snow and dirt high into the air.

Before he could even fix his footing, more shots came flying at him.

Bullets and bombs ripped through the trees and exploded against the snow, spraying sharp splinters everywhere. They were tracking him using infrared.

'This is bad… I need to pass through the border,'

Another round of bullets tore through the trees above him, forcing him to press his back tighter against the fallen log.

With little to no choice left, he pressed his palms against the snow-covered ground.

Flames burst from his hands, melting the snow so quickly that thick steam rose all around him.

The heat and water mixed, creating a heavy, dense fog that spread out fast, swallowing the trees and hiding him.

Luckily, the wind picked up, blowing steadily toward the direction of Estonia — exactly where he needed to go.

A small, fierce smile crossed his lips.

'Perfect… Nature is on my side. '

While the soldiers and drones tried to figure out where he went, he slipped deeper into the mist.

Even the Estonian soldiers on the other side of the border didn't know what to do. The thick fog made visibility almost zero.

When the Russian forces tried to follow him across the border, they were immediately stopped.

The Estonian guards raised their guns and shouted warnings.

Russian soldiers knew that if they stepped even one foot over the line, it could start a huge international incident.

They had no choice but to stop at the border, watching helplessly as the fog swallowed their target's trail.

Little did they know, Terrence actually didn't cross the border.

Deep in the dark woods, he found a small cave hidden behind some thick bushes and rocks.

'They'll think I ran straight into Estonia… That should buy me some time,'

'It will delay me, but it's the safer choice. The last thing I need is Estonian soldiers searching for me as well for illegal entry.'
