Chapter 17: Épisode 16 : Karasuno vs Nekoma --- 1st Set
The gymnasium was packed, buzzing with energy. The fans were chanting their respective teams' names. Nekoma and Karasuno, the eternal rivals, were about to play a memorable match.
In the stands, Oikawa, Iwaizumi, and Ren were taking their places.
Ren (looking around): "It's loud in here, huh? But I have to say, these little guys are motivating. It'll be interesting."
Iwaizumi: "Yeah. This is a historic rivalry. Get ready for some intense play."
Oikawa (crossing his arms): "Kageyama better shine today, or I'll give him free lessons after the match."
----
Daichi: (gathering the Karasuno team): "We're starting strong. No easy points. Stay focused."
Hinata (smiles excitedly): "Yeah! I'll surprise them like never before!"
Coach Ukai: "Don't underestimate Nekoma. They're calm and strategic. Stay alert."
On the other side of the field, Nekoma was also getting ready. Kuroo clenched his fist and addressed his team.
Kuroo: "You know what to do. Control the pace and don't make mistakes."
Coach Nekomata: "Kenma analyzes their game well in order to neutralize their attacks."
----
The two teams passed each other as they headed to the field. The atmosphere was tense, but the two captains, Daichi and Kuroo, stopped to exchange a few words. Kuroo, true to form, wore a smirk.
Kuroo (crossing his arms): "Hey, Daichi! Did you sleep well? No nightmares about Nekoma's wall?"
Daichi (raising an eyebrow): "Nightmares, you? No. On the other hand, I hope you warmed up well. I wouldn't want your back to give out after a few points."
Kuroo (laughing softly): "My back is fine, thanks. But you should focus on your knees. It must be hard to run after Kenma when he starts playing hide-and-seek with the ball."
Daichi: "Don't worry about my knees, they're holding up better than your jokes. Besides, are you sure Lev is ready? I heard he spends more time daydreaming than jumping."
Kuroo (pretending to be hurt): "Ouch, that hurts. But you'll see, Lev is more than an asset. You, on the other hand, better watch Hinata. With his energy, he might end up smashing into his own camp."
Daichi (crossing his arms, an amused smile): "At least we have Hinata to spike. What about you? Are you still relying on your bluffs or are you planning on playing for real this time?"
Kuroo: "Ah, I like that. Well, we'll see. But know that cats always land on their feet."
Daichi (with a wink): "And crows, they always fly higher."
The two captains exchange a knowing look before returning to their teams.
Kuroo (walking away, shouting over his shoulder): "Just try not to cry at the end, Daichi!"
Daichi (laughing): "I could say the same for you!"
The match was about to begin and Karasuno won the right to serve.
----
The first serve was made by Kageyama who slammed the ball into the air, fast and precise.
Ren (observing the trajectory): "Not bad..."
But Yaku received it without apparent effort, his eyes fixed on the ball with an icy calm.
Yaku: "No rush."
Kenma positioned himself and sent a perfect pass to Kuroo, who smashed violently. However, Nishinoya dove and saved the ball with a heroic reception.
Hinata: "Noya-san, you're incredible!"
Kageyama positioned himself and in a split second the ball arrived to the right where Hinata was already in the air. The famous quick attack of the duo was triggered.
Hinata (rising into the air): "No one can stop that!"
He smashed with lightning speed. The ball hit the ground before Yaku could react.
Commentator: "Karasuno scores the first point with their signature attack! An explosive start!"
In the stands, Iwaizumi smiled.
Iwaizumi: "This duo is still impressive."
Oikawa (crossing his arms): "Impressive, but predictable. They won't be able to depend on this attack the entire match."
Ren: "Maybe, but it's damn spectacular, HEEHE !"
----
After three consecutive quick ones, Nekoma began to adapt. Kenma carefully observed Kageyama and Hinata's movements.
Kenma: "They always use the same triggers. Hinata dashes as soon as Kageyama makes this precise move. Just slow down their reception a little, and they'll lose their rhythm."
The attack that followed Kageyama sent another quick pass to Hinata who followed up with a strike, but this time Kai almost managed to adapt to the timing.
Kai: "one more time..."
[ Score: 5-4 for Karasuno ]
After a few attacks, when Karasuno tried a new rapid, Kuroo anticipated and placed a perfect counter that shocked the duo and the Karasuno team.
Kageyama: " Tchh ... they adapted so quickly "
Kuroo: " Sorry to tell you but the crows will not fly high today "
Nekoma's defense began to shine. Libero Yaku dove with surgical precision, saving impossible balls. Nekoma's counterattacks, led by Kuroo and Fukunaga, put Karasuno in difficulty. Seeing that the rapid was no longer working as well, Kageyama decided to vary his game. Tanaka, motivated by Saeko's encouragement in the stands, unleashed a powerful diagonal attack, crossing Nekoma's block. Tanaka, getting up energetically after his attack:
Tanaka: "YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! THAT'S RYUUUUUNOSUKE TANAKA'S POWER!"
He pointed to the stands, where his sister Saeko was cheering him on loudly.
Tanaka: "DID YOU SEE, SAEKO?! YOUR LITTLE BROTHER IS A MONSTER!"
Hinata, looking impressed:
Hinata: "Wow, Tanaka-san is on fire!"
Kageyama (unmoved): "Stop yelling, we need to focus."
Tanaka, placing a hand on Kageyama's shoulder:
Tanaka: "Hey, king of the field, if you were as cool as me, you'd understand why the crowd loves this!"
Nishinoya, coming to high-five Tanaka:
Nishinoya: "That was magnificent, bro! The divine light is shining on us!"
Meanwhile, on Nekoma's side, Kuroo, watching the scene, sighed.
Kuroo: "That guy is unbearable..."
Kenma, looking away Kenma: "He's loud. I prefer it when he misses."
Sports commentator: "Tanaka Ryunosuke, still as energetic as ever, galvanizes his team and the crowd after this decisive point!"
Then Tanaka, fist raised, shouted at the top of his lungs:
Tanaka: "YOU'RE NOT READY FOR THE NEXT ONE!"
[ Score: 10-9 for Karasuno. ]
Then galvanized by this point Asahi Until now discreet, decided to show himself worthy of his title of ace. With a fierce determination, he slammed an attack so powerful that even Yaku could not save it.
Daichi (to Asahi): "That's it, Asahi! Show them who's boss!"
[ Score: 11-9 for Karasuno. ]
----
In the stands, Oikawa shook his head seeing Kageyama finally vary his passes.
Oikawa: "That kid is annoying... But he knows what he's doing."
Ren, still calm: "It's fascinating. It's not just a question of power or technique. It's their willingness to adapt that makes this match so intense."
Iwaizumi, crossing his arms: "No matter who wins this match, they will lose to us."
The match continued with both teams trading blows, the score reached 23-23. Each rally was a battle where each player gave their all. Kuroo blocked an attack from Tanaka, but Nishinoya miraculously saved the ball. On the last point, Kageyama sent a pass to the center and Hinata flew up pretending to attack, but at the last moment he let Asahi pass.
The latter hit with overwhelming force, scoring an important point.
[ Score 24-23 for Karasuno. ]
The moment was tense because it was the set point. Following Daichi's serve, yaku made a perfect reception and the Nekoma players started running all together with the intention of attacking.
Kageyama: "A synchronized attack?"
While Karasuno's attention was turned towards the opposing attackers, Kenma made a second-hand attack that surprised everyone.
[ Score: 24-24 ]
Kuroo made a floating serve that Daichi received with ease sending the ball towards Kageyama, and without delay Tsukishima, Daichi, Asahi, Hinata and Tanaka advanced at the same time with the desire to attack...
Ren (or smiling): "HAHAHA! They're doing the same combination as Nekoma... crows really feed on everything, it's interesting"
Kenma watched Kageyama trying to anticipate who the pass would be made to. Kageyama gave a quick and subtle glance to Asahi on the left, which didn't go unnoticed by Kenma and Kuroo who slightly shifted his foot to the left.
Kageyama (Thoughts): "I got you..."
Kageyama passed to the right without looking at Daichi who hit it perfectly, granting another set point to Karasuno.
[ Score: 25 - 24 for Karasuno ]
Iwaizumi: " A pass without looking at this moment of the match .... he is really talented"
Oikawa: "I don't like these geniuses full of talent, it disgusts me"
he said while trying to hit Ren who dodged with a smile.
Ren: "Do you feel pressure? It seems like our captain is afraid of being overtaken by his dear Kōhai ...? Don't worry Oikawa- Chan, for me you are the best. HAHAHA!"
It was Kageyama's turn to serve for the set. He sent a powerful serve that Yaku had trouble controlling, Kenma not in the best conditions but looking to destabilize Karasuno sent a fast ball in the center towards Kuroo who jumped and hit.
But at the last moment two big hands appeared and a perfect block sent the ball back to Nekoma's side and scored the final point. The thud of the ball hitting the ground resounded and Tsukishima slowly removed his hands from the net, his expression impassive as usual, but a glint of arrogance crossed his eyes behind his glasses.
Kuroo (with a smirk, looking impressed but provocative): "Not bad, kid. You're starting to understand how this works, huh?"
Tsukishima (calm, with a small sarcastic sigh): "Understand? You just had to not fall for such a predictable feint."
Kuroo (with a smile): "Ouch, that hurts. I'm going to have to take you a little more seriously now."
Tsukishima (with a mocking tone): "If you want... But I don't see how that would change the outcome."
Kuroo (laughing): "Hehe, I like your style. But be careful: this is just the beginning."
----
Hinata (amazed, jumping up and down): "INCREDIBLE, TSUKI! You blocked it clean! Kuroo, the captain!"
Kageyama (nods, impressed): "That block was perfectly timed. Not bad, Tsukishima."
Nishinoya (points at Tsukishima, laughing): "Hey, you're hiding your game well! Maybe there's a real wall in that big asparagus after all!"
Tanaka (explosive): "HAHAHA, YESSS! That's our Tsukishima! Knock them ALL down!"
Yamaguchi (applauds, admiring): "Tsukki, that was awesome!"
Tsukishima (in his head, annoyed by the attention): (Tsk. Why is everyone getting so excited? It's just a block.)
But deep down, he felt a little satisfaction seeing the respect in his teammates' eyes and even Kuroo's.
[ Score Final : 26 - 24 for karasuno. ]
----
The Karasuno players celebrated quietly, knowing that this was only the beginning. On Nekoma's side, Kuroo smiled.
Kuroo: "Not bad. But the next set is ours."
Kenma, tired but determined: "We almost got them. Just a few adjustments."
In the stands, Ren stood up and stretched.
Ren: "I feel like the next set will be even more captivating."
