Chapter 17: Chapter 16 - The End of the Practice Match
Facing Oikawa's terrifying serves, Karasuno continued using their previous strategy—expanding defensive coverage with their skilled receiver Daichi Sawamura.
But one person couldn't defend against all the attacks alone!
Oikawa's third serve targeted the corner where Tsukishima stood.
This time, Tsukishima managed to receive it, but the ball flew high over to Aoba Johsai's side.
"Oh? You got it? Impressive. Guess I didn't hit hard enough. But this is our chance ball..."
Oikawa looked relaxed as he gently set the ball high into the air.
"Make this one count, guys."
"Kindaichi!"
Good...I've shaken off the block...
Kindaichi jumped for the spike.
But in the next instant, a not-so-tall figure appeared before him—Hinata had teleported to the net, his left hand raised high to block Kindaichi's spike.
Thud!
Hinata got a touch.
Kageyama: "Here! Chance ball!"
Kindaichi: "Damn it! Next time I'll spike through you!"
One step, one moment—if he'd been even slightly slower, he'd never catch up to that guy. The only thing that could keep up with him was volleyball!!!
An orange blur flashed past the net before anyone could react. Shouyou Hinata soared through the air and swung his arm down hard.
Boom!
The ball landed behind Oikawa.
"Beep—"
Point Karasuno.
Oikawa turned his head just in time to see the ball bounce a few times on the floor before rolling to the corner.
Score: Aoba Johsai 24 - Karasuno 23
"What was that just now?!"
"The ball instantly flew from one corner of the court to the other! That set made it look like the ball was magnetized to the spiker!"
The gym buzzed with chatter.
Yuma Kikuzawa was thoroughly engrossed when he suddenly felt someone tugging his sleeve. Turning his head, he saw Yuuki staring wide-eyed at Shouyou Hinata on the court.
"That middle blocker...he spiked with his eyes open this time. Different from before."
"Hmph, because the opponents are evolving too!"
...
The match ended with a dramatic conclusion.
After the rotation, an overconfident Hinata swaggered to the service area—only to serve out of bounds, gifting Aoba Johsai the point.
The second set ended 25-23.
In the original timeline, Oikawa had only entered at the last moment, with Aoba Johsai losing 1-2 to Karasuno who first revealed their monster quick attack.
But now with the Kikuzawa brothers joining, Aoba Johsai's strength had significantly improved. They maintained their lead without relying on Oikawa and ultimately won 2-0.
"Don't get cocky!" Yuma warned earnestly. "Though we won this time, Karasuno didn't even have a libero. It's normal we won. Actually, it'd be strange if we couldn't beat an incomplete Karasuno lineup."
"Yuma-kun, we're not being cocky. Hurry up and mop—Coach Mizoguchi is watching us."
"Ah, right right."
Yuma diligently got to work.
After every practice, they had to collect balls, take down the net, and mop the entire gym again.
Japanese schools emphasized student autonomy—janitors were practically background decorations as students handled nearly all cleaning duties.
Yuma hadn't been used to it at first. It's not like they couldn't afford janitors—wouldn't practicing more serves be better than wasting time cleaning?
Holding this opinion in middle school had earned him a scolding from the hygiene director. Since then, he'd become extremely enthusiastic about cleaning.
Ahem...when in Rome. Definitely not because he was scared of getting yelled at...!
As Yuma miserably mopped, he spotted a sneaky figure in his peripheral vision. He immediately stopped and called out: "Oikawa-senpai—where are you going when everyone's cleaning—?"
Oikawa, who'd been trying to sneak out, jumped at the shout and rushed over to cover Yuma's mouth.
"Quiet, Yuma-chan! If Iwa-chan finds out, I'm dead...!"
"Mmph!" Yuma responded indistinctly before prying Oikawa's hand away and lowering his voice. "What are you sneaking off for, Oikawa-senpai?"
—Take me with you, or I'll tell!
The silver-haired boy's eyes clearly conveyed this threat.
Oikawa glanced around to confirm neither Iwaizumi nor the coach had noticed, then sighed in relief. "I'm going to see Karasuno's junior. You don't know anyone from Karasuno, so no need to tag along."
So he's going to trash-talk Tobio Kageyama!
How could I miss out on something this fun?
"If I don't know them, then I'll get to know them! Let's go go go! Before they leave."
Yuma shoved his mop into Yuuki's hands with a "you know what to do" look and followed Oikawa out of the gym.
The two childish teenagers took a shortcut to the school gate and struck poses on either side.
Thus when Karasuno arrived at the gate, they were greeted by this sight: two tall, handsome boys standing on either side—Oikawa with crossed arms and lowered head, Yuma with one hand on his hip, gazing skyward at a 45-degree angle.
Karasuno's members collectively paused mid-step.
"It's the Great King and the all-around silver-haired ace!"
Hinata hid behind Tanaka.
Yuma's eye twitched: 'All-around silver-haired ace'? Don't I deserve a cooler nickname?
Tanaka: "What do you want?!"
Hinata: "What do you want?!"
Tanaka: "Looking for a fight?!"
Hinata: "For a fight?!"
Oikawa waved his hand. "No need for such hostility."
He looked at Hinata.
"You, the short one. Your last spike and synchronized attack were excellent."
Hinata blushed: "Eh? Ah, thanks..."
"So next time, go all out from the start. I haven't shown you my sets yet. Oh, and I'll keep improving my serves too. Your attacks are strong, but your receives are weak—you can't win many matches like that.
I'm not the only one with strong serves either. The preliminaries are coming up—hope you survive long enough to face me..."
Oikawa stepped closer to Karasuno and pointed at Tobio Kageyama.
"After all, I want to properly defeat my adorable kouhai as a setter in an official match!"
Clap clap clap clap clap!
Yuma applauded enthusiastically.
"Oikawa-senpai is amazing! Oikawa-senpai is so cool!"
The overly deliberate cheering made the atmosphere awkward.
Oikawa's cool demeanor instantly shattered as he glared at Yuma with annoyance.
"Yuma-chan, no commentary needed right now."
"Eh—? But I genuinely think you're cool (smirks)."
Karasuno members: "..."
Daichi leaned toward Kageyama and whispered: "Kageyama, do you know this silver-haired guy?"
Kageyama whispered back: "Looks familiar, but can't remember. Probably a first-year at Aoba Johsai."
"Hey, don't whisper when you're this close—I can hear everything."
Yuma deadpanned while looking at the two standing just two meters away.
