Chapter 36: Chapter 36: This Is Just Too Unfaithful
"Ah..."
Hera, or rather, "Hebe," slowly stirred from the bed, yawning lightly.
She had spent the entire night working, finally finishing the last of her secret coordination with her daughter. Their alibis now matched up perfectly.
But just to be safe, she still needed to extract and hand over a backup copy of her current memories to Hebe later.
Sitting up and gazing into the mirror of water, Hera frowned slightly at the overly youthful face staring back at her.
She would have to adjust Eros's perception soon. She needed this face to truly match Hebe's real one.
After a simple wash and tidy-up, Hera stepped out of the room.
The moment she walked into the hallway, something felt… off.
A few nymph attendants were huddled nearby, whispering to each other with flushed faces. Their nervous glances and giggles made Hera raise an eyebrow.
Just as she was about to question them, a strange, muffled sound reached her ears. It was soft but unmistakable.
It was rhythmic, like waves crashing endlessly against a shell-made wall. Natural, and yet unnervingly intimate.
And layered underneath was a faint, delicate moan. Gentle and trembling, like a kitten's mewling.
Even through the thick palace walls, the sound could still be heard.
Wait a second. That voice. That was Amphitrite, wasn't it?
And those sounds, was she really…?
Hera wasn't sure what to think. The noise was both too subtle and somehow still too clear. Her thoughts spun into a confused tangle.
"Hold on, where's that human?"
She snapped at the nymphs mid-whisper, her tone tinged with visible irritation.
"Lady Hebe?!"
The group of nymphs straightened up in a panic, scrambling into silence under her darkening glare.
"I asked you, where is the human, Eros? Didn't he return to his room last night?"
The air practically trembled under her fury. The poor nymphs, clueless as to why the "Goddess Hebe" was in such a stormy mood, didn't dare breathe too loudly.
"Well, uh… the princess said last night that all the other rooms were full, so…"
One of them finally spoke up in a tiny voice.
Honestly, none of them thought this was a big deal. In fact, most of the attendants were secretly delighted.
At long last, their goddess had woken up to love, and her first target was such a high-quality specimen too.
If Amphitrite had taken the first bite, who knew? Maybe they would have their chance someday too.
But the sheer pressure radiating from Hera's icy expression gave them second thoughts. Something wasn't right here.
Jealousy? Of who?
Amphitrite, you sneaky little minx...
Who would've thought, beneath that sweet, harmless exterior, she could move that fast?
While Hera had been making plans to marry her daughter off to Eros, Amphitrite had already been next door, playing a very different kind of game.
For a goddess who governed marriage and fidelity, this was an absolute slap in the face.
Worse yet, she had already told Hebe about the engagement. Could she even back out now?
No. She had to endure this.
After all, even Zeus had multiple wives before finally crowning her queen. Eros hadn't promised anything yet, so technically, he wasn't being unfaithful.
But still, for Amphitrite to act that quickly, Hera had clearly underestimated her.
No wonder she had been raised to be the future Sea Queen. Take her lightly, and you would end up paying the price.
Until now, Hera had written Amphitrite off as nothing more than a pretty vase.
Gritting her teeth, she turned back to the nymphs.
"Are they still… not done?"
"W-we're not sure…"
One of the nymphs bravely answered.
"They, uh, started before bed last night. And this morning when we checked, they were still at it. We didn't dare interrupt."
The entire night? Aren't they tired yet?
Hera was speechless. Aside from kissing, groping, and maybe a little nibbling, what was so fun about it?
She could only understand it if the partner was someone like Zeus.
Otherwise? She honestly didn't get the appeal.
Were Eros and Amphitrite not sore by now? Didn't their arms ache? Didn't their mouths feel numb?
The ocean's rhythmic crashing around her suddenly sounded a whole lot more awkward.
Fighting the urge to sneak a peek, Hera waved her hand, telling the nymphs to prepare her breakfast while she waited.
What she didn't expect was to end up waiting all the way until noon.
It wasn't until the sun reached its peak in the sky and cast its light down into the depths of the Abyss that the bedroom door finally opened.
Out walked Eros, bare-chested, radiant, and not the slightest bit tired.
If anything, he looked even more refreshed than usual.
"Well now, you're up early," he said cheerfully, taking a seat across from her.
Hera's brows twitched. She sniffed the air.
"…What's that strange smell on you?"
There was definitely Amphitrite's scent on him. But there was something else. Something unfamiliar that she couldn't quite place.
"Oh, this?" Eros stretched lazily. "It's the scent of youth."
He kept things vague, not realizing the loaded meaning behind his words.
But for Eros, this moment marked the true beginning of his mythological journey in Greece. Everything before this? Just warm-ups.
After half a day of intense scholarly exchange, Eros felt utterly reborn.
Gods? Pfft. No problem at all.
He was physically superior to Amphitrite in every way.
In fact, he was practically Superman-tier now. With every rhythmic motion, he swore he could almost see shimmering "+1" symbols floating in midair.
And once he remembered Amphitrite was supposed to be Poseidon's wife, that silver-haired sea creep, he couldn't help but punch out a symbolic +10 critical hit.
He only stopped after the Ocean Goddess collapsed from exhaustion.
A groundbreaking academic breakthrough, truly. A pivotal moment in the study of mortal-divine relations.
Amphitrite had courageously sacrificed herself for this noble research. Eros was so moved, he nearly cried.
Even the system acknowledged his triumph with a reward:
[First Contact Between Mortal and God]
You've bravely taken the first step toward bridging the gap between gods and mortals. Many will remember your bold endeavor.
Effect: Slight increase in renown. You have obtained a minor portion of the Authority of [Fertility].
[Authority: Fertility]
Effect: ????????
This marked Eros's third fragment of divine authority, after the Sky Authority from Zeus and the Shard of the Primordial Love God.
He still wasn't sure what it did, but based on the name alone, he could tell it was bound to be absurdly powerful.
Basking in his triumph, Eros didn't even notice Hera's darkening expression.
He also failed to realize the full implication of what he had just said.
"The scent of youth."
Hera hadn't forgotten. Her current disguise was Hebe, the Goddess of Youth, her own daughter.
So you just got out of bed with Amphitrite, and now you're already eyeing the next one?
Unfaithful. Completely unfaithful.
