Chapter 32: Chapter 32: The Punch That Rewrites Your Personality
Their wordless meeting ended with mutual understanding. As Eros walked out from before the divine throne, a new achievement notification appeared before him:
[Oceanus' Sea]
You've stood at the edge of the sea and gazed upon the original ocean of Greece. You've faced the Lord of the Ocean herself. That is your proof.
Effect: You have acquired the skill [Illusory Demon Emperor Fist].
Wait, that counts as an achievement? Then he seriously needed to make a trip to Mount Olympus.
Who knows, maybe he'd unlock Galaxy Explosion or Heavenly Dance Treasure Wheel, or even get a couple of full-blown God Cloth sets.
As powerful as the Illusory Demon Emperor Fist was, it was still more of a sneak-attack tool or a bullying move, not quite a true finishing blow.
Despite its name, it wasn't really a fist technique. Rather, it was a skill that used one's Cosmos to control the enemy's brain domain, essentially a form of mental domination.
That said, yes, you did have to punch your opponent in the head to activate it.
In the hands of the wicked, this was obviously a terrifying mind-control technique.
But in the hands of a righteous soul like Eros, this was a noble art, the Personality Correction Fist, perfect for purifying the twisted values of Greek society.
Excellent. He would conquer all of Greece with this one move, and brainwash every single god into being kind, honest, and full of love.
Eros instinctively stirred his magnetic field powers, but then caught himself and shook his head vigorously.
Crap. Was he already showing signs of that extreme ego and desire common among magnetic-type powerhouses?
He smothered the strange ambition brewing within him and returned to the throne room.
Amphitrite and Hebe were still there. The moment he saw Hebe, he realized she'd probably known about this all along.
"Eros… I'm sorry."
Amphitrite must've learned of her father's decision through Hebe.
She looked guilty, still apologizing for breaking her promise, and yet beneath her voice, there was a faint trace of fear toward her own predetermined fate.
She looked so soft and gentle, it was honestly hard to picture her becoming Queen of the Seven Seas.
To hand over such a sweet girl to that pervy silver worm Poseidon... What a waste.
No. Absolutely not. As the righteous emissary of love and hope, he couldn't let something so unjust happen.
Arranged marriages? What kind of backward feudal nonsense was that? Straight to the dumpster with it.
As for that freak Poseidon? He'd teach him a lesson personally.
What? He wasn't strong enough yet? Then he'd just have to take the long route.
"…Let's not talk about this for now. How about we change locations first?"
Amphitrite nodded and called for a carriage, planning to take Eros back to her palace.
But before they could leave, Hebe suddenly stepped forward with a smile, blocking their path.
"Isn't it improper for a man to stay in the same room with a maiden soon to be wed? Allow me to arrange a separate residence for you."
Eros gave her a sidelong glance, then promptly ignored her and climbed into the carriage with Amphitrite.
"Etiquette? I think sleeping under the same roof as an unmarried girl is the highest form of respect. And besides, it's not like Amphitrite objected, did she?"
"You're the goddess of wine at Olympus banquets. Don't tell me you still don't get how things work around here?"
Hebe caught the look in Eros' eyes. That deep disdain, it was as if he were calling out her hypocrisy.
Yes, this is Greece. Got a problem with it?
Amphitrite's face turned crimson.
"W-What are you saying?! My palace is huge! There's no way we'd actually sleep in the same bed!"
But maybe sensing danger in her own plan, Amphitrite reflexively called out,
"Hebe, why don't you come along too? Didn't Father assign you to be Eros' guide?"
Hebe glanced at Eros, hesitated a moment, then agreed.
Their orca-pulled carriage dove through the capital of the Deep Abyss with joyful speed.
Eros glanced at Hebe's fresh, youthful face, a thoughtful look in his eyes.
She clearly didn't like him, but didn't turn down the task of guiding him. She was definitely up to something.
A spy from Hera? Or maybe a plant by Zeus?
But he quickly pushed those thoughts aside.
Whatever. Hebe didn't seem particularly clever, he could probably coax whatever it was out of her with a little sweet talk.
More importantly, he had to figure out how to protect the innocent Amphitrite.
Maybe sensing his eyes on her, Amphitrite shyly shrank into herself.
Earlier, with Styx around and Perseis constantly hogging Eros' attention, she'd been able to act naturally.
But now, with no one else to draw fire, she felt completely exposed under Eros' gaze.
Was it a mistake to invite him to her palace?
Could she even protect herself?
When they arrived at Amphitrite's palace, the nymphs greeted them at the gate.
"Prepare a guest room for my companion and arrange a feast," Amphitrite instructed, before excusing herself to change clothes.
With just Eros and Hebe left in the hall, apart from the busy nymphs flitting to and fro, he politely declined their subtle offers to "help with the bedding" and sent them all away.
Right now, Eros' face was calm, but the intensity in his expression was chilling.
He wasn't even in the mood to flirt or joke with the nymphs.
All he could think about was how to take Amphitrite away and deal a cruel, humiliating blow to that lecherous Poseidon.
But how?
Should he just elope with her?
No, that wouldn't work. For one, he didn't have some grand, noble love for Amphitrite. He couldn't pull off that kind of romantic stunt.
Even if they escaped, they'd probably run into Poseidon sooner or later and get crushed instantly.
At best, it'd just loop them right back onto the original fate track.
"…Hmm."
He looked at Hebe, who sat far away yet kept sneaking glances at him.
"Say, what would you do if I told you I wanted to stop Amphitrite from marrying Poseidon?"
The sudden question startled her. She hadn't expected Eros to speak to her first.
But at his question, her brows furrowed.
Stop Amphitrite from marrying Poseidon?
Hebe didn't know about the concept of fate, but she understood one thing, it would be extremely difficult.
If you were a powerful major deity, someone with political backing, maybe it wasn't impossible.
But Eros? He was just a human. Even if he was close to Zeus, he was still human.
"…Do you love her?"
Hebe asked softly.
Because if he didn't, then why go to such lengths?
Eros shrugged.
"Depends on how you define it. Sure, I like her. But that life-or-death, soul-shattering kind of love? Nah, I'm not there yet."
He knew exactly what he was doing, what he was feeling.
But then again, he'd never been a rational man.
And maybe that was exactly why he'd inherited a fragment of the Primordial God of Love and Desire.
