Chapter 1071: Suicidal Plan
In the depths of the spirit world, Adam found himself in a dangerous situation. In a strange twist of events, he found himself courting death and fighting for his life at the same time.
The chain—a result of an annoying Rank 4 Spell—tied him to Felix, the Mana Core Magus from the Cult.
Felix needed Adam alive to get out of the spirit world.
But why should Adam do what Felix wanted?
It had taken tremendous effort on his behalf to drag Felix out of Ravenfell. And now that they were in the spirit world, Adam wouldn't leave until one of two things happened: Felix died, or the chain broke.
Either way, the death of Felix and the breaking of the chain were tightly bound. One would lead to the other.
So Adam came up with a daring, suicidal plan of action!
Damn it! Is Merlin's craziness rubbing off on me? Since when did I become so reckless… Ah, forget it. It's now or never!
The youth discarded all unnecessary thoughts from his mind and threw himself headfirst into the battle against the four-armed monster.
A Mana Vortex Magus rushing to fight a spirit world creature no weaker than a Mana Core Magus was quite a comical scene.
Yet, it was happening, nonetheless.
"You devious brat, get back here!" Felix roared in frustration as he dashed towards the monster as well.
He couldn't let Adam die. No matter what. If the youth died, then his fate would be sealed, too!
"Damn you!!" He roared furiously as his hands turned into a blur once again. He sacrificed two sets of materials and cast two Rank 4 Spells in the time it took Adam to reach within attack range of the monster.
A brilliant magic circle lit up beneath the four-armed monster. In the blink of an eye, a dozen black vines studded with poisonous thorns erupted from the ground, lashing at the ruler of this snow island.
The monster moved swiftly, dodging most of the vines with wild precision… but not all.
One vine coiled around its leg, and as the venomous thorns sank into its thighs, the limb went rigid, paralyzed almost instantly.
And that was when Adam appeared before the creature like a phantom, his right hand surging with an overwhelming concentration of mana. The sheer force radiating from his palm distorted the air around it.
Hand of Doom: Coiling Palm Strike!
A thunderous clap echoed on the snow-covered hill. When Adam's claw struck the creature's waist, he twisted his palm at the point of contact, releasing all the accumulated mana.
As a result, a large chunk of the creature's left side of the waist was completely obliterated. Such an attack would have killed a Mana Vortex Magus in one go, but it barely made the mighty spirit world creature before him stagger.
He had done his job, though.
As soon as he landed his strike, he immediately drew back—well, as far as the length of the chain would allow him. And right at that moment, a giant blackish-red centipede emerged from the ground, coiling around the four-armed creature.
This was Felix's second Rank 4 Spell!
The enormous centipede swiftly immobilized the four-armed monster. Its arms were tightly ensnared by the centipede, its one leg was bound by the black vine, and half its waist was obliterated, thanks to Adam's effort.
This was the perfect moment to kill the monster!
However… Felix did just the opposite. He ran towards Adam, planning to tightly clutch him in his hands and never let go.
"Quickly get us out of here!" He roared angrily.
There was no way he was going to fight a Mana Core-level spirit world creature, not when he didn't know anything about it. Besides, Mana Core Rank existences were quite hard to kill. Despite having the four-armed monster completely pinned down, Felix was not confident in killing it.
Seeing the cultist dash toward him, Adam displayed an expression of relief. He raised his hands in a show of surrender and sighed, "You're right… Let's just get out of here. I, uh… I really overestimated myself."
Felix's eyes gleamed with a fierce light. Once he got hold of the raven-haired youth again, he swore he would never let go of the devil, not until they made it back to the material world.
In the blink of an eye, he arrived before the youth and then lunged at him!
But he ended up passing through nothing but smoke. Felix's eyes widened when he realized he had been tricked! An illusion woven by a Mana Vortex Magus that was capable of deceiving a Mana Core Magus?! What sort of a ridiculous concept was that?
The real Adam stood before the four-armed monster, his hands raised high and his palms facing the sky… or whatever passed as the sky in the spirit world.
Above him, six massive flaming spheres, each one meter in radius, floated in the air, radiating a fierce orange glow. With a ferocious look in his eyes, Adam thrust his arms forward, launching the fiery orbs at the four-armed monster.
Rank 3 Spell: Adam's Fireball Barrage!
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Adam immediately drew back as he witnessed his target engulfed in a giant explosion. Of course, he didn't expect the monster to go down with his spell. In fact, the monster hadn't been his target to begin with.
His real target had been the centipede all along!
Felix, too, realized his intentions and couldn't help but roar, "You diabolical son of a—"
But he never did get to finish his sentence.
As the explosion from Adam's spell subsided, the four-armed monster stepped out from the smoke, unharmed. In two of his hands, it held the mangled remains of the centipede, and at its feet lay the shredded remains of the black vine, severed and scorched.
Oi, oi, those were Rank 4 summons, you know… Adam thought to himself nervously, shocked at how effortlessly the four-armed monster had taken care of Felix's summons.
Suddenly, Adam's pupils constricted and his heart tightened.
One moment, the monster was standing amidst smoke and flames; the next… it had already appeared before him, its claws mere inches away from tearing his head off.
In the last possible moment, Adam's eyes glowed with a brilliant holy light, and he blinked out of existence!
When he reappeared, the monster was no longer in front of him. It was behind him, slammed deep into the cliff face, cracks spiderwebbing out from the point of contact.
Adam's blood turned cold as he thought to himself, That was close!
He slowly turned around and saw the monster clawing its way out of the cliffside. Its once-paralyzed leg was already back to normal, and the portion of his waist that was obliterated was now whole again, regenerated as if the damage had never occurred.
The four-armed monster flexed his shoulders, then tilted his head, cracking his neck with an eerie motion. Though its eyelids were sewn shut, it somehow seemed to be coldly staring at Adam, as if peering into his very soul.
A moment of tense silence settled between them.
Then, in an instant, the monster vanished.
When it reappeared... it was already too late.
Hot blood sprayed through the air, and before he even realized what had happened, Adam was already on the ground…
With the left side of his body missing.
