Chapter 88: Sleepless Night
Miyamoto Rina is a news anchor for the Osaka News Channel. After work on Friday, she planned to rest for two days.
Her job is very demanding. Normally, she has to take a day off during holidays. This time, she was lucky and it coincided with the weekend.
At night, Rina was so excited she couldn't sleep. Thinking she didn't have to go to work the next day, she picked up her computer and started watching a romantic drama.
Just then, she noticed someone saying that Mirai-sensei had launched a new manga. As a fan of Mirai-sensei, she immediately clicked and saw a manga.
"Five Centimeters Per Second" is a strange name. The cover shows a scene of a man and a woman with their backs turned under a fallen cherry tree. It is very beautiful. It is a love manga. Rina was surprised. She really enjoys reading love manga.
She was too busy to open the manga and read it carefully.
The style of this manga is very similar to Mirai-sensei's. It is beautiful. At the beginning of the story, there are two children, Takaki and Akari who are classmates.
In spring, Akari ran happily with a cherry-colored umbrella, and Takaki followed her. The two chatted and laughed, convinced that they would be together forever.
The innocence and tenderness of the two children captivated Rina.
Shortly after, Takaki and Akari transferred schools. Rina was not surprised. There must have been setbacks in the story. This separation was within her expectations. On the contrary, it could be said that separation can make people yearn for reunion.
Rina turned to the next page and a payment window suddenly appeared.
"One hundred yen?"
The price left Rina a little stunned, but, in her opinion, it was quite cheap, and since it was a Mirai-sensei's drawing, there was no problem, so she paid one hundred yen and continued watching.
Takaki and Akari truly found a way to contact each other. Although they were far apart, they didn't forget each other. At that moment, Takaki had to move to a farther place and decided to see Akari.
They had been separated for a year. Takaki meticulously planned, studied the transfer, thought about what to say when they met, and even spent several weeks writing a letter to give to Akari.
However, it seemed that fate was playing a trick on him. The day Takaki left, there was a snowstorm. The scheduled trains were delayed one after another, and the letter containing the feelings he wanted to express was lost in the snow. Takaki gritted his teeth and didn't cry.
Seeing this, Rina's heart ached. 'It was so regrettable. Would they really not be able to see each other?'
She kept reading.
However, Takaki couldn't hold back his tears. When he got off the train, which was more than four hours late, and saw Akari still waiting in the waiting room, the two hugged and cried.
"Wow!"
exclaimed Rina. She took a tissue to wipe her tears: "Great, Takaki."
It was so moving that she almost thought she would be late. She hadn't expected Akari to wait for her there for so many hours. Seeing the two children share their first kiss, Rina couldn't help but cry again.
Finally, she calmed down. Takaki and Akari had to separate again after a brief meeting.
He bid farewell to Akari on the train. Seeing this, as a veteran reader, Rina vaguely sensed the story's development and felt that she should stop.
But...
"It's so beautiful, how can I stop!"
This manga is so beautiful, the snowflakes flying, the train passing in the moonlight, the boy and girl's reluctant expressions... This manga is so delicate, how can people stop!
The story has opened a new chapter, the protagonist's perspective has changed, and it is narrated from a girl's perspective.
Kana (substituting for Hanako) is a high school student on an island. She fell in love with Takaki, a classmate who transferred to the same school as Takaki in junior high. She worked hard to study and be able to go to the same high school as Takaki. Although she finally succeeded, she couldn't express her feelings to him.
She didn't know when Takaki started writing messages without a recipient. Every time Kana saw Takaki sending messages, she thought: 'If that person were her, how happy she would be.'
Later, Takaki was admitted to university and left by plane, with Kana watching him depart.
Rina cried twice during that time.
When she first saw Kana, she still thought angrily: 'Is this woman a mistress?' But after reading this, she couldn't help but change her mind.
"What a shame..."
Takaki had been thinking about Akari, and when Kana noticed he was thinking about other people, she silently protected him without confessing.
Takaki returned to the city where he grew up, and after graduating, he stayed in that bustling place to work. However, he didn't find Akari. The long separation caused them to lose contact.
"In recent years, he walked with his head down, thinking only of achieving the unattainable, but he didn't know what it was. And this idea, arising out of nowhere, gradually became a kind of oppression, so he could only rely on working tirelessly to get rid of it. When he realized it, his heart, increasingly rigid, could only feel pain. Then, one morning, he discovered that the unforgettable feelings he once had had completely vanished."
"That day, I quit my job."
A spring later, Takaki quit his.
He and Akari, now an adult, crossed paths at the train junction and recognized each other. As they approached both sides of the track, they turned their heads at the same time.
The speeding train obscured their view on both sides. Akari covered her long hair, ruffled by the wind, with the hand wearing a wedding ring. As the train passed, Takaki discovered that no one was on the other side.
In the background of the manga, cherry blossoms fell at a speed of five centimeters per second. Takumi looked at the street on the other side of the tracks. After a long time, a sense of relief and liberation appeared on his face, and he turned around and left with a smile.
The story ends with Akari getting married, but they don't end up together...
After reading it, Rina felt unwell.
She lay on the table, crying with red eyes, pulling out tissues again and again, and went through an entire box.
"Wow... Mirai-sensei, I hate you!"
Rina thought of the boy she liked when she was young, and Takaki and Akari looking back as the train passed, which broke her heart.
"Why is it so cruel?"
"Why use such a beautiful manga to tell such a sad story?"
'Perhaps it's because of the beauty that people feel particularly heartbroken.'
"No, I'm going to protest at Hinotori Publishing's door and ask Mirai-sensei to change the ending of Five Centimeters Per Second!"
If he doesn't change this ending, Rina won't be able to sleep peacefully, and many people won't be able to sleep all night either...
