Chapter 68: Signing
"Mirai-sensei, good news!"
On Friday, Sakura, who arrived at work, showed an expression of excitement as she entered: "This issue of Inuyasha has been very well received, and sales have increased again."
"Not only that." Alice walked in with her and laughed, "Shōjo Manga's sales are pretty much the same as last week, and the gap has widened."
These weeks have been extremely turbulent. Kaya Hoshino launched the original Hoshi manga and once attempted to dethrone Inuyasha, but failed. In the following two weeks, Inuyasha gained ground again.
Faced with the loss of influence to Kaya Hoshino, Takumi used quality to convince others that his manga deserved to be the first in Japan.
However, with the increase in sales, Takumi was happy, but also a little regretful. He read Hoshi this week, and the plot was, as expected, without highlights. Kaya Hoshino was initially an opponent he expected, but his reaction speed was not fast enough and he failed to keep up.
The plot of the next issue of Inuyasha will be more daring. If Kaya Hoshino does not make important changes in her work, the distance between the two will become more and more accentuated.
Not only that.
The other novelists at Tatsuryū Publishing also lost heart.
They had been arrogant and wanted to invade the manga industry, but several of their colleagues were brought down one after another. Not even the genius Kaya Hoshino could defeat Mirai-sensei. These novelists suddenly discovered that the manga industry was not attractive at all and they retired one after another.
Knowing that they would be trampled by Mirai-sensei if they released a manga, who would dare to come?
And Takumi, inevitably, got a little bored without an opponent.
In the morning, he and Sakura-sensei started drawing, and Alice worked on the computer. Everything remained the same as always.
Just during the break, Takumi recalled the Detective Conan reader appreciation meeting that would be held the next two days and asked Alice about the specific content of this event.
"Content? We don't organize anything." Interestingly, Alice didn't care much: "This event was organized by the readers themselves. I don't know what the content is, but I've heard that some groups took turns performing."
"Self-organized?"
Takumi heard Shiori say that it was an official organization. He asked the question, and Alice explained it to him in detail.
It turns out that the so-called readers' appreciation meeting was originally a gathering organized by Detective Conan fans on the internet. Due to the large number of applicants, it attracted the attention of the editorial department of Weekly Shōnen. Kurosawa took the initiative to provide a venue, and the name of the meeting was changed to the thank you meeting.
However, the official participation in the thank you meeting was not very numerous. In addition to providing a venue and hiring staff to maintain order, the event's specific content was fully assigned to fan groups to organize on their own.
"Each group has a fixed time at home and they can perform as much as they want during that time. Do you want to go with Shiori? In fact, you don't have to go for two days. Just ask when it's time for your home group."
After listening to Alice, Takumi texted Shiori immediately. Shiori seemed to be in class and was unresponsive for more than half an hour.
"I'm going to perform for two days. If you are busy, you can come at 15:00 on Sunday. Our performance is in the afternoon."
Takumi told Alice the time.
"In the afternoon? Do you want to act?" Alice was surprised: "The afternoon is the time for our performance at home."
As an organizer, Hinotori Publishing, naturally, could not justify the absence. Weekly Shōnen Magazine handled the main show on Sunday afternoon. Although he was responsible, it was just a formality to express his gratitude, and then the stage was given to several prominent fan groups to perform.
"I didn't expect Shiori to be your longest-time fan,"
Alice said surprised. 'It seems simple to be able to perform on weekend afternoons, but there are really two conditions: one is that the group must be a very prominent fan group and the other is that the artist must be recognized by the members of the group.'
I knew that Takumi hadn't taken the initiative to join the fan group. In this case, the problem lay with Shiori.
Takumi also recalled that Shiori said she was the admin of the chat room, but there was nothing to worry about. He was relieved to have to perform only on weekend afternoons, so that he could continue to practice piano on Saturdays and mornings.
However, he found that Hinotori Publishing didn't value in-person activities as much as he thought.
"Could it be that all of Japan has not yet seen a scene as lively as fan exhibitions or other anime activities in their previous life? The manga industry here has limited development and no one is making an effort to develop the market, but is it normal?'
"Why don't you do something?"
Takumi suggested to Alice: "It's very difficult to organize a readers' meeting, why not take this opportunity to promote the volume? I remember that it will be out soon."
The second volume of Detective Conan will be released in December, and the first volume of Inuyasha will be released around the same time. It would be a waste not to take this opportunity to advertise.
"They are your readers, and the benefits are not many. Anyway, there will be announcements in the future, and there is no rush." Alice frowned slightly: "But now that you say it, the company is a little cold with this meeting, which might disappoint readers."
"Because it was too sudden, we didn't prepare in advance." Alice explained, "The company plans to host a readers' meeting after the New Year, so they're not interested."
Things aren't as bad as Takumi thought. This world has autograph sessions, reader meetings, and various in-person activities. Takumi hasn't been in the industry for long, and Hinotori Publishing thinks it would be best to keep him up after a while.
"Well, I'll ask the editor-in-chief to add more content to satisfy readers and liven up the thank you party... Oh, right!" Alice clapped her hands suddenly. "Why didn't I think of it before? I can solve a problem too."
His eyes lit up and he stared at Takumi.
"Master Mirai-sensei, sorry for the inconvenience!"
"What do you mean?"
Takumi frowned slightly. Alice hadn't called him Mirai-sensei in a long time.
"You'll understand tomorrow."
Alice smiled and refused to reveal anything.
The next day, Saturday.
"Quick, bring this."
Early in the morning, Alice ordered several people to take the boxes to Takumi's house. Takumi waited for them to move and opened the boxes. They were filled with beautiful postcards made by characters from Detective Conan and Inuyasha.
"Well, sign them!" said Alice with a smile. "Hurry up and sign them. Go to piano lessons early."
Takumi counted the numbers, more than ten at most. 'Will Alice come her autograph? What's so good about it?'
But he underestimated the value of his autograph. For Mirai-sensei, who always keeps a secret, an autograph is something that will drive her fans crazy.
And Alice had another purpose in asking her to sign it.
