Chapter 83: I Will Shield You From It All
"Favor?" Robb was stirred by the word, recalling Elena's earlier explanation:
When a student achieves a breakthrough under their mentor's guidance, the pure energy from their growth is fed back to the mentor in the form of a "favor," helping to purify the mental contamination they accumulate.
"My condition has indeed improved quite a bit compared to previous years," Lady Elena said, gently tapping her smooth cheek with a fingertip. "While I still can't maintain this peak state for too long, both the frequency and duration of my recovery have increased. That's why I could meet you in this form today."
She gave Robb a meaningful glance. "So don't worry about these small potion materials costing me anything. Every bit of your progress is the best repayment I could ask for."
Robb bowed deeply, warmth swelling in his chest. "I won't let you down."
"I know you won't," Elena stepped closer, her emerald eyes turning deep and focused. "As for those eyeing you like prey, you don't need to worry too much."
Her voice lowered slightly but gained an edge of power:
"Whether it's Cynthia or that smiling-mask-wearing Oliver, neither of them dares lay a finger on you right now."
Seeing Robb's surprised expression, Elena chuckled softly. "The Black Mist Forest has many eyes and ears. Little tremors like these rarely escape my notice."
She reached out and gently patted his shoulder. "Focus on preparing for your exam. No matter what unexpected events arise, trust in your judgment and skills."
Her emerald eyes gleamed with a cold light: "Before you break through to… no, before you enter the reserve wizard track, all you need to do is push your limits. As for everything else, I will block it for you…"
The strength behind those words struck Robb to his core.
The usually stern and hunched shopkeeper now radiated a powerful magical presence in her youthful form, a stark reminder of her true status as a formal witch.
"Thank you, ma'am," Robb said earnestly, a weight lifted from his heart.
"All right, take these materials and get back to work," Elena smiled. Under the light, her youthful beauty was even more striking. "If you have any more questions, come find me anytime."
As the young apprentice bowed slightly and left the apothecary, he didn't see what happened after he exited…
The stunning pink-haired witch let out a slow breath and clutched a wound at her side, pain twisting her face.
…
Back in his dorm, Robb immediately began applying Elena's suggestions to refine his formulas.
Sure enough, adding moon dew made the clarity potion far more stable, it retained its effect even at high temperatures.
As his practice deepened, his understanding of potion-making reached a new level.
He realized he could not only follow instructions but adjust formulas on the fly based on subtle changes in materials and environment, ensuring optimal results.
At the end of each day's practice, he used the Timekeeper's Pocket Watch to reset his fatigue and start fresh the next morning.
As the exam drew near, Robb repeated Elena's formulas daily, sharpening his skills and confidence.
However, long hours cooped up practicing left him feeling sluggish and drained.
Flipping through his planner, he decided to break up his revision sessions with something new, a mental reset.
He'd made up his mind: with a new quarter approaching, now was the time to sign up for some paid classes at the academy.
Taking these classes wouldn't just improve his strength, it would broaden his understanding of the supernatural.
…
At dawn, he reviewed his notes one last time, then grabbed his reference sheet on the Silverwing Separator and stepped out of the dorm.
The Black Mist Forest's weather was as gloomy as ever, but a rare sunbeam pierced the thick clouds, casting a golden pillar of light over the trees.
Robb took it as a good omen and headed toward the academy's public lecture tower in good spirits.
The gray tower loomed above the low surrounding buildings.
A cloth notice board at the entrance displayed the course names, times, and fees in Old Witchscript.
Robb didn't go in immediately. Instead, he stood outside and studied the board carefully.
Recalling Talisa's advice, he chose two foundational classes: Magic Circuit Optimization and Mental Stability Techniques.
Though basic, these were the cornerstone of advanced spell research, many powerful witches began with these exact courses.
"These two add up to fifty magic crystal shards…"
He touched the pouch at his hip, filled with the fragments he'd painstakingly saved.
"A bit pricey, but let's hope the return justifies the cost."
Inside the registration hall, a middle-aged man in a dark gray robe sat at the desk, expressionlessly sorting papers.
When Robb approached, the man looked up, scanning him from head to toe with the mechanical gaze of a scanner.
"What do you want, apprentice?" he asked in a flat, tired tone.
"I'd like to enroll in Magic Circuit Optimization and Mental Stability Techniques," Robb replied politely.
The registrar pulled out a thick ledger and began flipping through it. "Name?"
"Robb Reyne."
His finger stopped on a page. His brow furrowed, then relaxed.
"Robb Reyne… from the Kingdom of Farwynd, apprentice-level…" he murmured, then suddenly looked up, interest flickering in his eyes.
"You're on the 'Annual Observation List' and marked as 'Medium Potential.'"
The clerk looked surprised. "That's rare among apprentice-tier students."
Robb felt a pang of recognition, this must be Lady Elena's doing. "What does that mean?"
"It means you get a discount on basic courses."
The clerk opened another book. "The original price was fifty shards. For you, it's only forty."
Robb smiled. Any discount was good news.
He took out his pouch and counted out forty glowing fragments onto the desk.
"Lucky for you, both classes have new sessions starting this afternoon."
