Chapter 60: The Name Below the World
The fall through the transline shaft felt endless.
Air screamed past Kade's ears. Marei clutched his forearm as they plummeted, her visor flickering madly with corrupted spatial readings. Below them, the Spire's underlayers—once sealed by the highest encryption the world had ever known—split open like the rind of a decayed fruit.
Then the world inverted.
They landed—softly.
On air.
Or something like it.
Kade rolled upright, eyes adjusting to the dim light of a massive subterranean chamber. It didn't resemble any human architecture. The walls were smooth obsidian glass, etched with glowing glyphs that shifted as he tried to read them.
Marei landed beside him, breathing hard. "This isn't part of the Spire. This is pre-Catalyst. Maybe even pre-Collapse."
Kade stepped forward, toward a central dais that hummed like a heart. At its center stood an obelisk, blacker than void, pulsing gently.
As he approached, the Catalyst flared.
Cognitive Access Request Confirmed.
Welcome, Kade Fallon.
Authentication Key Accepted: FORGOTTEN KING.
The obelisk shuddered. A voice—ancient, genderless, but impossibly calm—echoed through the chamber.
"You've arrived late, King. The seals broke long before your birth."
Marei's eyes widened. "That's not a recording. That's a... sentient archive."
The obelisk continued.
"This was the vault of truth. The Zero Memory Core. Hidden after the first Reset, erased in the second. Only a sovereign shard-bearer could open it."
Kade placed a hand on the surface. A shock raced up his arm.
Memories not his own flooded in—visions of the first Catalyst bearer, of the war before the Collapse, of a name spoken only in whispers:
"Solus Aethryn."
Kade staggered back.
"Who the hell is that?"
The obelisk responded:
"The Architect. The one who wrote the System… and the one who tore it apart."
New Quest Thread Unlocked: Hunt the Name That Built the World.
Primary Objective Updated: Locate Solus Aethryn.
Marei whispered, "We've been chasing fragments. Shards. False starts. But if this is real—Kade, this changes everything."
He nodded, eyes hardening.
"No more shadows. No more resets. We find him."
And far, far above them, a warning began flashing through dormant satellites still tethered to the ancient grid.
THE FORGOTTEN KING HAS BREACHED ZERO CORE.
ACTIVATING COUNTERMEASURE: THE PALE CROWN.
