Chapter 84: Director Smith's Misguided Moment
It was already past midnight.
Director Smith rushed to the street and bought two roast chickens and three bottles of fine wine for the old master.
After eating and drinking his fill, the old master let out a satisfied burp and said, "Good disciple, you're thoughtful. Now, about that girl..."
Director Smith's expression turned strange.
Wasn't the old master supposed to be a dignified sorcerer?
Wasn't he on the path to mastering magic?
Was indulging in women really okay?
But earlier, the old master had single-handedly driven away twelve C-rank monsters, and that couldn't have been a lie.
Hurriedly, Director Smith said, "Master, we can talk about the girl later. You won't miss out.
But first, tell me—what's this whole thing about magic? Are there really magicians of legend?"
The old master's expression turned serious, "Magicians? Of course, there are magicians! You've seen those otherworldly creatures yourself; how could there not be great magicians?"
Director Smith muttered the words "otherworldly creatures" under his breath, then suddenly widened his eyes. "Master! Are you saying the monster invasion is actually the arrival of these creatures from another realm?"
The old master stroked his beard in satisfaction and said, "You're a bright one! Those otherworldly creatures are precisely what people now call monsters."
Director Smith quickly asked, "Then what about magicians? Why haven't we seen any around?"
The old master, displeased, replied, "Aren't I a magician?"
Director Smith shook his head, "Master, I mean why are there so few magicians around? I've never heard of them."
The old master's eyes took on a nostalgic look, as if recalling something from the past.
After a long pause, he finally spoke.
"There used to be many magicians.
When the otherworldly creatures first invaded, the human magicians were the first to face them in battle.
Unfortunately, the creatures were far too powerful.
Despite their efforts, the magicians' mortal bodies were no match in the end.
Luckily, before their fall, a few of the Pioneer Heroes passed down their knowledge of magic arts to the human world."
Director Smith frowned, deep in thought, but after a while, still couldn't figure it out. "Where are these magic arts now? Can I learn them?"
The old master glanced at him, "Aren't you awakened ones relying on the very magic arts passed down by those Pioneer Heroes?"
Those words hit Director Smith like a thunderbolt.
So, this was the secret behind humanity's awakening!
No wonder the awakening didn't align with science, and no one could trace its origin—this was the reason!
Director Smith was now utterly bewildered. He had just uncovered an extraordinary secret!
The old master snorted, "But all of that power doesn't truly belong to you.
You lot are still far behind us old folks!"
With a fiery gaze, Director Smith asked, "Master, what about you? What's your background?"
The old master seemed to recall a painful memory, picking up the wine from the ground and taking two heavy gulps, his eyes turning red.
With a trace of sorrow on his weathered face, he began, "I came from Mount Everest three hundred years ago, named after the first mage of humanity.
After a century of seclusion, I emerged to find my sect completely deserted.
As I traveled the world, I discovered that the otherworldly creatures had already broken through the defenses of the magicians.
The mana in the world had collapsed, and the era of magicians had come to an end."
Director Smith was confused once more.
A century of seclusion? How old was this man?
Was this what it meant to be a magician?
The old master looked at Director Smith, trying to appear nonchalant as he said, "Fortunately, I met you just as my time was running out."
Director Smith was stunned for a moment. "Me?"
The old master nodded, "You've got good potential, a rare affinity with magic."
Director Smith's eyes lit up with excitement, "I... I could become a great magician too?!"
The old master snorted, seemingly displeased with Director Smith's self-doubt, and said, "You're a once-in-a-century magical prodigy. Although you've missed the best age for learning magic, you're still quite remarkable."
The old master turned to gaze at the melancholy moon, his voice slow and steady as he continued, "As for me, my life has reached its limit, but you—you still have a chance. Do you have the resolve to seek the path of magic?"
Director Smith was overjoyed.
"So I have this kind of talent after all! I always knew I was meant for something greater!"
Eagerly, he said, "Master, I won't hide it from you. Since I was young, I've always felt that I wasn't ordinary. It's like something has been calling me from the future! Now I understand—I've been waiting for the path of magic!"
Director Smith stood up, knelt before the old master, and knocked his head on the ground three times, deeply bowing.
"Please, Master, teach me your wondrous techniques!"
The old master smiled and nodded, "From today onward, you are the last disciple of my lineage, the final student of Merlin, head of Merlin's Magic School!"
He pulled a handwritten book from his robes and handed it to Director Smith.
"Stand up. This is the foundational magic art of Merlin's Magic School. You'll start by building your core."
Director Smith looked at the weathered book, trembling with excitement as he carefully accepted it. On its cover, five large characters were written with bold, flowing strokes: Merlin's Magic Core Formation Method.
He treated the book as a priceless treasure, tucking it into the pocket of his suit jacket before sitting back down beside the old master.
At this moment, Director Smith recalled the twelve masked figures and asked, "Master, do you have enemies? Not to brag, but I have some influence in the secular world, and perhaps I can help ease your burdens."
The old master immediately understood that Director Smith was referring to the masked men. His eyes filled with terror, and he exclaimed, "Absolutely not!"
His voice had changed completely.
Director Smith sensed something unusual and grew curious.
"Master is so powerful, but is there something even he fears?"
Cautiously, Director Smith asked, "Who are those people?"
The old master took a deep breath, calming himself, and stared intently at Director Smith.
"My dear disciple, this is the second thing I must tell you. You must remember it well! Whenever you encounter people wearing masks, run immediately! Run as fast and as far as you can!"
Director Smith was shocked by the old master's tone. "Master, are they really that strong? I saw you handle them with ease!"
The old master let out a bitter laugh, his face showing lingering fear. "Those were the lowest-ranked hunters of the mercenary-guild-whose-name-cannot-be-said, mere grunts.
Above them are intermediate-level hunters, and above those are high-level hunters.
And beyond that, there are the elite hunters.
As for me, your master, I'm just an intermediate-level hunter."
Director Smith was stunned once again. He couldn't believe that such a terrifying organization existed in the world!
C-rank hunters? In that organization, they were considered nothing but grunts?
He murmured, "Good heavens, if even low-level hunters are that powerful, how terrifying must their leader be?"
The old master's face turned pale with fear, and he quickly covered Director Smith's mouth.
"Silence! The leader is omniscient and omnipotent. Merely saying those two words could very well allow him to hear you!"
Director Smith was dumbfounded, prying the old master's hand away. "Omniscient and omnipotent?"
The old master's expression turned deadly serious. "The leader is the most terrifying human in this world.
Not only is he a top-tier awakened one, but he is also the last remaining Pioneer Hero!"
Director Smith stared at the old master in horror.
A top-tier awakened one was already capable of dominating the world, but the leader was also a terrifying Pioneer Hero!
The sheer weight of the leader's power and influence was suffocating.
The old master spoke gravely, "I was once a member of the mercenary-guild-whose-name-cannot-be-said, but I left because I had no choice if I wanted to ascend to archmage level.
So, for your own safety, never tell anyone that you are my disciple."
Director Smith nodded rapidly.
He wasn't foolish enough to tell anyone he was a disciple of Merlin, the master of Merlin's Magic School!
What if the mercenary-guild-whose-name-cannot-be-said came after him?
As for using law enforcement to investigate the guild?
Don't make him laugh. Director Smith wanted to master magic and seek the power of an archmage, not provoke the leader and court death!
That man was omniscient and omnipotent!
