Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Online Novelist, Sophia
Chapter 71: Online Novelist, Sophia
The young girl sat down, seemingly wanting to say something.
She had been observing Alexander for a while before she finally spoke:
"Actually, there's a bit of a logic issue with your writing. If you made a small adjustment, it would be much better."
Alexander paused, raising an eyebrow slightly:
"Hmm?"
Only then did the girl clearly see Alexander's eyes.
His gaze was distant, like the misty landscapes of the world, breathtaking yet elusive.
When he stared intently, there was an inexplicable aggressiveness deep in his eyes.
Although well-concealed, there remained an untamed wildness beneath the surface.
The girl blushed slightly:
"I roughly glanced at your setting.
Recruiting some impoverished people to act as assassins,
Disguising them as servants is quite interesting.
But there's a bit of a problem with the rewards you're offering."
Alexander didn't expect her to remember the general plot just from a quick glance.
A smile tugged at his lips:
"I'm all ears."
The girl closed her laptop and patiently explained to Alexander:
"Don't take it personally if I'm wrong, okay?
I just feel there's a logical flaw.
After they kill someone, the protagonist gives them a large sum of money as a reward, right? That doesn't seem quite right."
Alexander asked, puzzled:
"That doesn't make sense?"
Without hesitation, the girl replied:
"Desperate people suddenly get a huge amount of money. Why would they continue being assassins?
Once their desires are fulfilled, they'll lose the drive to fight.
It's better to give them a desire that can never be fully satisfied."
Alexander nodded lightly.
The greatest motivators for humans are desire and fear.
Although the Heavenly Flame of Creation could instill fear in others, that alone wasn't enough.
If all the soul hunters feared Alexander, there wouldn't be much difference between him and a tyrant.
And to Alexander, a tyrant had always been difficult to manage.
Prolonged fear would only breed hatred.
How could a group of people who hate you work loyally for you? How would they ever strive to improve the quality of their missions?
Soul hunters shouldn't just fear Alexander; they should also beg for his favor.
Desire and fear must complement each other.
With both combined, Alexander would be no different from a god in a temple.
Alexander earnestly sought advice:
"Money is indeed too crude. If it were you, how would you write it?"
The girl appeared a bit nervous and embarrassed:
"I'm just a novice writer, after all."
But she still answered seriously:
"If it were me writing...
I would have the protagonist choose assassins from people who have completely lost hope in life.
The protagonist could become their savior, promising them a brighter future.
For those living in darkness, if they can see sunlight when they look up, they'll fight desperately for that warmth.
Of course, the protagonist must remind them that they are still in the dark."
Alexander became more interested in this girl.
This approach was indeed much more reliable than recruiting criminals who had nowhere else to turn, using money and the threat of death to control them.
Alexander nodded repeatedly, sincerely saying:
"You're quite a talented novelist."
Sincere praise, without any flattery, is better than any sweet words.
The girl's heart filled with a warm, sweet feeling, sensing that she had found a kindred spirit.
A beautiful smile curved her lips:
"If you ever get stuck while writing, just call me. I might have some ideas."
She then lowered her head, typing quickly on her own laptop, continuing her work.
Alexander gave the girl a meaningful look:
"If there's a chance, I definitely will."
Alexander pulled out his phone, and Rosie had already sent over the girl's information.
[Sophia, 19 years old, D-rank Awakener.]
[Talent: Light Healing, support type.]
[Background: Unknown.]
Alexander glanced at the girl in front of him, slightly surprised.
She had a rare support-type talent.
Was the reason he hadn't noticed her presence earlier due to this talent?
Some support-type Awakeners possessed the ability to hide their spiritual energy.
A talent like this, with her appearance, would surely attract the attention of major corporations—so why was she writing web novels?
The "unknown background" part became all the more intriguing.
Alexander was highly suspicious by nature, always forming various hypotheses.
Did she see his notes unintentionally, or was it a coincidence?
Or perhaps... it was deliberate.
Who was she, really?
Could she be from the Security Bureau?
There was still a question lingering: Had some mysterious transcendent force noticed him?
Sophia sensed that Alexander was looking at her, and a slight blush appeared on her delicate face. She smiled before continuing to type.
Her smile was pure, giving off the vibe of a high school deskmate, making Alexander feel a sense of nostalgia, as if from another life.
Alexander lowered his head, resuming his thoughts on his "Soul Hunter" plan in his notebook.
He had no idea how much time had passed.
Sophia finally finished her work for the day and stretched lazily.
She glanced outside—it was already very late, the night deeply set in darkness.
Aside from the staff, only she and Alexander remained in the café.
Sophia blinked:
"Aren't you leaving? It's really late."
Alexander glanced at his watch—it was already midnight.
Sophia packed up her laptop, putting it into her pink laptop bag.
She pulled out a packet of tissues from her pocket, wiped down the table in front of her, and then tucked the dirty tissue back into her pocket.
"I'm heading out now. I'll be back tomorrow."
Alexander responded:
"Be careful on your way."
Sophia waved at Alexander and walked out the door, only to be startled by the pitch-black darkness outside.
The city had recently suffered a monster siege, and the power system hadn't fully recovered yet, leaving the streetlights inoperative.
Summoning her courage, Sophia stepped out of the café.
After only a few steps, a chilling sense of unease crept over her.
She glanced back at the brightly lit café, took a deep breath, and stepped into the darkness.
Unbeknownst to her, atop the café roof, a strange figure, cloaked in murderous intent and wearing a ghastly mask, was watching her.
As Sophia walked further away, the figure spread a pair of wings and followed her, gliding through the night like a large bird.
Sophia lived in the eastern district, in an apartment near the local security bureau.
The street below the apartment was silent and deserted.
Jack, who had been tailing her, was ready to make his move.
Although he didn't know how this girl had offended Alexander, it didn't matter—Alexander's orders required no explanation.
Just then, a burst of fire erupted from the security bureau nearby, followed by a deafening explosion.
Jack, who had just landed behind Sophia, froze.
The eastern district security bureau had blown up again?
Sophia, too, was startled by the explosion, spinning around as her pupils contracted sharply.
"Ahhhh!!!"
She saw Jack—his terrifying mask and the undisguised malice radiating from him sent her into a screaming panic.
Immediately after, hurried footsteps echoed from the apartment.
Jack couldn't risk killing in front of witnesses, so he had no choice but to abandon the attempt.
He spread his wings and soared into the night sky.
Several uniformed officers rushed out of the apartment building.
They were security officers who had been demoted to the eastern district.
The explosion at the security bureau had instantly drawn their attention.
They didn't even glance at the terrified, pale-faced Sophia, instead rushing toward the burning security bureau.
Meanwhile, at the Old Oak Café.
Alexander finally completed the framework for his "Soul Hunter" plan, stretching his neck.
The two female waitresses had already left.
Yvette Ivanova swayed her curvaceous figure as she approached Alexander, handing him a cup of hot coffee:
"Sir, freshly brewed."
Alexander's eyes drifted toward the window, where Jack was walking toward the café.
Jack entered, standing in front of Alexander, head lowered:
"Boss, I found her address.
But the eastern district security bureau blew up, attracting a bunch of officers, so I couldn't take action."
Alexander raised an eyebrow in surprise.
The security bureau had blown up again?
He had nothing to do with that.
Still, it was a good thing.
Jack continued:
"I observed the girl for a while.
She doesn't seem to be from the security bureau, just an ordinary girl.
I'll find another opportunity tomorrow."
Alexander tapped his fingers lightly on the table, contemplating for a moment before saying:
"Let's not be too active for now. In a few days, when Ethan Blake is released, we'll prepare for the second hunter meeting."
Jack's face showed astonishment.
Ethan Blake would be released in a few days?
Hadn't he just been imprisoned?
