Chapter 69: Giovanni and Welma
Bluewater City, Cruz Western Restaurant.
Jonathan, dressed in a sharp suit with a perfectly tied bow tie, walked through the restaurant's doors, holding a bouquet of bright red roses.
He wasn't a local. He came from the capital city and worked as an inspector for the Security Bureau.
His trip to Bluewater City was to investigate Ethan Blake's case.
Looking inside from the entrance, he finally spotted the person he had come to see.
Jonathan's eyes lit up, and with a nervous heart, he walked over to the table.
"Sorry, Welma, I'm late."
His gaze was full of admiration as he looked at the beauty before him.
Welma looked stunning today.
She wasn't in her usual uniform and boots but was instead wearing a form-fitting evening gown with a white fur shawl draped over her shoulders.
Her long legs, slender waist, and full chest were shown off to perfection.
Welma smiled softly, "No worries, old classmate."
Jonathan sat down, scratching his head.
"You look beautiful."
The usually cold and tough inspector suddenly seemed like a shy young man.
He and Welma were high school classmates. After graduation, one went abroad to study while the other entered the security system.
It was thanks to Jonathan's efforts that Welma was able to join the capital's Security Bureau upon returning to the country.
Welma was smart too. Through a few years of strategic moves, she had been directly transferred to Bluewater City.
Jonathan's family had warned him that Welma was using him as a tool, but he was too infatuated to care.
Now, Welma had asked Jonathan to come to Bluewater City to help her.
He hadn't hesitated for a moment, immediately pulling strings to start investigating Ethan Blake.
Welma smiled at Jonathan's compliments, her beautiful eyes soft as water, not once looking away from him.
"When do you plan to arrest Ethan Blake?" she asked.
When it came to business, Jonathan straightened up a bit, his brows furrowed.
"There are a lot of suspicious points about Ethan's case that I don't quite understand."
"If we're going to arrest him, I'll need more time to investigate."
A flicker of dissatisfaction crossed Welma's eyes, but she quickly concealed it, parting her red lips to say:
"Is the evidence not enough?"
Jonathan shook his head.
"No, his desertion during the mission is enough to arrest him."
"It's just..."
Jonathan looked at Welma suspiciously.
"During the investigation, I discovered that Ethan Blake has very little personal wealth, and he's been severely injured multiple times during missions, nearly dying."
"He doesn't seem like the type to be a greedy coward. Could there be some misunderstanding?"
"You know, during a demon beast siege, anything can happen."
Jonathan pulled out his phone, ready to say more, but a soft hand gently placed itself on top of his.
Jonathan looked up in surprise.
"Welma..."
The Welma before him was the picture of charm, but the hint of grievance in her expression pierced Jonathan's heart.
Welma sighed, sounding aggrieved:
"Brother Jonathan, are you really going to let him off?"
"He deliberately sabotaged my plan to repel the demons. He wanted Bluewater City to fall and for me to be held accountable."
"If I hadn't fought the Skeleton King with my life on the line, the one you'd be investigating right now wouldn't be Ethan—it would be me."
The doubt in Jonathan's eyes gradually faded, replaced by growing anger.
Welma took the opportunity to appear even more pitiful, adding softly:
"Brother Jonathan, can you really bear to let someone else hurt me?"
That sentence hit like a knife to the heart, and Jonathan fell completely.
Grabbing Welma's hand tightly, he declared:
"Don't worry, Welma, I won't let anyone hurt you! I'll arrest Ethan Blake tomorrow!"
Welma glanced at Jonathan's hand holding hers, a look of disgust flashing in her eyes.
She subtly withdrew her hand, lowering her gaze.
"But Ethan is the Security Officer captain, deeply rooted in Bluewater. Won't this cause trouble for you?"
Jonathan snorted coldly.
"Trouble? What's Ethan compared to me?"
"My family fully supports you."
"Just look at the crime rate—ever since you came to Bluewater, it's plummeted."
"They used to say you were only good at schemes, but now they'll see your real abilities!"
Welma smiled charmingly.
"Enough talk about that. It's been a while since we've reunited—let's have a drink!"
Just then, angry shouts erupted from the restaurant entrance. A group of large men barged in, smashing the doors and storming inside.
They immediately started wrecking the place, startling the diners, who quickly fled their seats.
The restaurant's security guards rushed in, shouting back at the intruders.
From their exchange, it became clear that these men were extorting protection money.
The argument quickly escalated, and the thugs underwent a grotesque transformation.
Their eyes turned a dead gray, their muscles bulging unnaturally.
The blood drained from their skin, leaving them looking like corpses.
The security guards, though awakened individuals, were outnumbered by the thugs who barged in.
After a fierce fight, the thugs gained the upper hand and knocked all the security guards to the ground.
They stood menacingly in the restaurant, shouting the manager's name.
Too afraid to come out, the manager stayed hidden, so the thugs began smashing the restaurant's furniture and facilities.
Jonathan frowned slightly.
Bluewater City doesn't seem so peaceful lately.
This wasn't the first time he had encountered something like this over the past few days.
Isn't Bluewater City supposed to have the best security?
Why is this happening?
Welma's eyes were filled with icy coldness—these thugs were practically slapping her in the face!
She strode over to them, not even using her abilities, and with only her martial skills, she quickly disabled every one of them, leaving them unable to move.
Her tall figure, paired with her elegant evening dress, presented an unusual yet captivating sight, one that left Jonathan staring in awe.
Welma was furious.
Since Ethan Blake's suspension, the crime rate in Bluewater City had multiplied at an alarming rate.
Could Ethan Blake really have been the guardian keeping the criminals in check?
Is Bluewater City falling apart without him?
She had to admit, Ethan's suspension was indeed a blow to public safety.
But before Ethan had become captain of the Security Officers, wasn't Bluewater City still running just fine?
Now, the surge in criminal activity was worse than ever!
Using work as an excuse, Welma apologized to Jonathan and left the restaurant.
Jonathan wasn't upset—on the contrary, he admired this side of Welma even more.
Imperial Nightclub.
In the general manager's office, Giovanni sat in his grand leather chair, his face dark as he stared at the surveillance footage of a young man.
This boy had the audacity to openly sell contraband in his establishment—truly bold!
Since joining the Mercenary Guild, Giovanni had warned the lowlifes not to cause trouble in his place.
The men downstairs had tried to catch the boy and teach him a lesson.
But the kid seemed to have eyes on the back of his head—no one could catch him.
He slipped in day after day, and the security guards were helpless to stop him.
The boss in charge had no choice but to report the situation to Giovanni, asking him to deal with it.
Mad Wolf entered the room from outside.
"Boss, we can't find any records on this guy. He's probably from out of town."
Giovanni's face darkened further.
"If he's selling contraband today, he'll be selling my organs tomorrow!"
"Mad Wolf, I want you to handle this personally. Bring that kid to me."
Mad Wolf nodded and was about to leave when a powerful force slammed into his chest.
Like a kite with a broken string, Mad Wolf flew backward from the door, crashing into the wall.
Cracks formed where he hit.
Giovanni's eyes widened with rage, and he slammed the table as he stood up.
"Who the hell dares to die today?!"
But the moment the figure entered the room, Giovanni deflated like a cat in front of a tiger.
Welma, dressed in an evening gown and wearing high heels, walked in.
Giovanni immediately forced a smile.
"Director Welma, what brings you here?"
Welma stepped onto his desk, grabbing Giovanni by the collar.
Her high-slit dress revealed much, but she didn't seem to care.
Welma's voice was icy cold.
"Giovanni, you've been acting out of line lately."
Giovanni's face showed panic as he frantically waved his hands.
"What are you saying, Director? I've been keeping a low profile!"
Welma sneered, pulling a stack of documents from her small bag and throwing them in his face.
"Look at these. Aren't these your men?"
"What is it? You think with Ethan Blake gone, no one can keep you rats in check anymore?"
Welma's cold, beautiful face leaned in close to Giovanni, her red lips parting slightly as she whispered:
"Or are you trying to make a fool out of me while the inspection team is still around?"
The strong scent of her perfume hit Giovanni's nose directly.
