Chapter 31: Chapter 31: Giovani: The Hunter at DawnChapter 31: Giovani: The Hunter at Dawn
Eastern District, Harbor Alley.
The streets were rundown, with old signs hanging from dilapidated buildings reading "Hair Salon" and "Massage Parlor."
The dim, pink lights cast a faint glow on the grimy street.
Most people in the Eastern District knew this area as the cheap red-light district, where the workers were mainly women in their forties.
Several undercover officers had already scoped out the situation, and one of them cautiously asked Ethan Blake, "Boss, are you sure those things are in here?"
Ethan had initially doubted the information from the Mercenary Guild, but as soon as he saw the tightly closed shutters of the Harbor Hair Salon, he was convinced. The Mercenary Guild's intel was spot on.
As the former director of the Eastern District, Ethan knew this area like the back of his hand. The Harbor Hair Salon was always the busiest spot because it employed women in their mid twenties, which drew in a lot of customers.
It was prime business hours. Why would it be closed?
"Boss, the director already has it out for you. If we barge into a business without cause, they might pin something on you," one of the undercover officers whispered.
Ethan shot him a glance and signaled the team to block off the street. The undercover officers quickly surrounded the building, securing the best positions for the operation. Their movements showed clear training and coordination.
Ethan's arm bulged and transformed into a bull-like form as he ripped the shutters open. Several officers stormed inside, shouting, "Police! Everyone on the ground!"
What they found inside made everyone freeze.
Blood splattered the walls like someone had thrown buckets of paint. The bodies of scantily clad women lay scattered around, torn to pieces. The stench of decay filled the air, assaulting everyone's senses.
The officers' faces turned pale. The monsters really were hiding here!
Even the intelligence division hadn't been able to uncover this. How had Ethan known?
There was no time to admire Ethan's foresight. The officers quickly drew their weapons and began to sweep the building.
"Leader, no signs of monsters on the first floor!"
"Leader, nothing on the second floor!"
"Leader, there's something in the basement!"
Ethan, along with the nearby officers, rushed to the basement. Inside, they found about a dozen young women huddled in a storage room, fear etched on their faces.
They looked like they worked at the establishment.
One officer lowered his guard and approached the group of women, "It's okay, don't be scared. You're safe now."
Ethan suddenly shouted, "Don't go near them!"
But it was too late. One of the women morphed into a mantis-like creature, its sharp claws slicing toward the officer.
Ethan, in his bull form, charged forward and smashed the monster's head with his horns. The remaining women dropped their disguises and transformed into monsters, kicking off a fierce battle in the dimly lit basement.
Most of the monsters were low-ranked, E-Class, with only two D-Class among them. Under Ethan's leadership, they were all swiftly eliminated.
"Leader, you're amazing! We just cleared out an entire monster nest!" an officer praised.
Ethan, expressionless, replied, "Tell the others, it's time to get to work."
An officer with a headset pulled out a communicator and sent the message.
Before arriving at Harbor Alley, Ethan had already stationed officers near all known monster hideouts in the Eastern District.
Now that they had confirmed the Mercenary Guild's intel, it was time to strike and clean them out.
"Leader, should we call in support from the Eastern District officers?" another officer asked.
Ethan shook his head, "No, we're heading to the Western District. Tonight, we're clearing out every monster hiding in this city!"
Seeing the monsters disguised as innocent young women had chilled Ethan to the bone. If he hadn't been so familiar with the seedy underbelly of the Eastern District, he might have been fooled too. He knew girls that young wouldn't be working in places like this.
These monsters were unlike any he'd encountered before. Tonight's enemies were highly intelligent.
They would surely try to warn each other, so time was of the essence! If they didn't act quickly and wipe out all the monsters, it would be like stirring up a hornet's nest.
The security bureau was in full swing tonight.
Whether it was officers from the central headquarters or local enforcers, Ethan had mobilized them all.
He showed remarkable command ability, the kind that would have made him a legendary general in ancient times.
Under his leadership, the Eastern and Western Districts were cleared within a few hours.
Northern District Outskirts.
A modified van from the security bureau sped down the highway, with Ethan Blake sitting in the passenger seat, his face filled with worry.
"Leader, maybe you should rest a bit?" one of the officers suggested.
Ethan shook his head, urging, "Drive faster." Ethan hadn't rested in 24 hours, yet he didn't feel tired.
The night was about to end, and he wasn't sure if the officers would be able to finish the job before sunrise.
Once the sun came up, the citizens would start moving about. If the monsters realized they were in danger, they might go on a rampage, possibly attacking civilians. A bloodbath was imminent.
They arrived at the Scrap Yard.
The officers, despite their fatigue, now radiated a murderous aura, their bodies charged with spiritual energy.
They split into three teams, gripping their weapons tightly as they stealthily approached the scrapyard on their toes.
"There's no time left. We need to attack now!"
At Ethan's command, two strength-type officers kicked down the large iron gate of the scrapyard.
The officers stormed into the yard, but what they saw froze their battle cries in their throats. Even Ethan's eyes widened in shock.
The scene showed the aftermath of a brutal fight.
Piles of scrap metal were scattered around, and the corpses of more than a dozen monsters lay among the debris.
Standing in the middle of the monster corpses was a large man.
He wore a black, wide-brimmed European-style hat, a black trench coat, and black leather pants.
His face was covered by a black leather mask that hid his eyes and nose.
He looked somewhat like mercenary from the movies, except he wasn't holding a gun—his hand was a cannon, likely his innate ability.
Without a doubt, this mysterious man was the one who had dealt with the monsters.
As the first light of dawn pierced through the darkness, illuminating the man, he looked almost like a lone ranger.
The man was surprised when he saw Ethan, but then he grinned, revealing rows of teeth stained yellow by cigarettes.
"I'll leave the rest to you," the man said before leaping off the pile of scrap and into a black, unmarked van. He sped away from the scrapyard without a second thought.
"Leader, should we chase him?" one of the officers asked.
Ethan snapped out of his daze and quickly replied, "No, ignore him. On to the next target!"
He turned and sprinted back to the van. The sun had risen, and time was running out.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed. Ethan pulled it out and glanced at the screen.
It was a message from the Mercenary Guild.
[Exterminate the Demons: Eliminate the monsters hiding in Bluewater City.]
[Mission Status: Completed!]
Ethan stopped dead in his tracks, staring in disbelief at the growing number of pedestrians and cars on the street.
All the monsters in Bluewater City had been wiped out?
Was this the work of the hunters?
Ethan felt a wave of confusion and relief wash over him, his tense body finally relaxing after the long night.
"Leader, is something wrong?" one of the officers asked, puzzled.
Ethan let out a long sigh of relief. "Head back to headquarters."
The officers didn't press him further and climbed into the van with Ethan, heading back to HQ.
On the way, Ethan remained silent, his brow furrowed as he pondered something that had been nagging him all night.
The Mercenary Guild was known for avoiding exposure, wasn't it?
Sure, hunting monsters was one of their rules, but why would they risk revealing themselves by operating so openly in the city?
There were plenty of monsters out in the wild, too. It was clear the guild was trying to save the city.
Weren't extraordinary forces supposed to care only about their own growth, disregarding ordinary people?
With a complex expression, Ethan murmured to himself, "What kind of organization is the Mercenary Guild, really?"
"The security bureau will never allow an extraordinary force to exist. I'll have to find a way to erase all traces of the hunters' activities tonight."
