God Ash: Remnants of the fallen.

Chapter 1036: First Signs of the Barons.

A tide of beasts...

Some were twisted Aberrations clawing at the ground, their eye red with a wicked lust for blood. Others let their chilling caws rip through the sky as they flapped their enormous wings.

Vincent couldn't help but tremble a bit,

"This is a big one, huh..."

He turned around.

Sure enough, Manny's reaction was quite the opposite of his.

Running his tongue across his lips, the uncanny look of hunger in his eyes seemed even brighter that the speckles of sunlight drifting across his face.

Calio's reaction on the other hand, was rather... interesting to see.

Vincent sighed, 'These two are hopeless...'

A flash of radiance danced between his fingertips as he pulled his communicator out of his inventory.

Clearing his throat, he activated it,

"Hunter, you there..."

"What is it?" Hunter's gruff voice came through almost immediately.

Vincent pursed his lips as he watched the tide of fleshy death roll in closer and closer.

For some reason, the panic seemed to be away the close it got.

"I believe the 'changs' has come."

"Really?" Hunter's voice seemed rather skeptical.

'If I lose my life because of your doubt.'

Vincent didn't say that part out loud. Instead, he racked his brain for a better way to civey what he was seeing.

Eventually, he sighed,

"I'll keep it simple then. There are at least a thousand Mutant Creatures rolling towards us at the moment. The weakest of them are, dare I say, are high level Tier 1s. The strongest so far would be a high level Tier 2. The first of them will be making contact in about thirty minutes. Please, treat this as urgent."

"I see. Then, I'll get back to you in a moment."

The line cut with a terrifying click.

Vincent let out a shaky breath.

Then turned around. A tearful smile had made its way onto his face,

"We are saved, guys."

"You fool! We have clearly been left for dead! Abandoned! Oh no! What should I do, what should I do?!" Calio roared in despair.

Luckily for them, they had not yet been abandoned.

Hunter let out a sigh and turned to Cain.

"So, you heard it."

Cain had a deeply contemplative look on his face.

"My guess is that they are coming from the lowlands; our current target." Cain finally said after a moment of thought.

Hunter nodded,

"From what Vince said, they seem to be running away from something."

Cain raised a brow,

"You think Devils?"

Hunter shook his head, "Probably not. Judging from the direction, my guess is—"

"The plains. In other words the lowland cities of Vermonth and Avalon."

Hunter nodded slowly.

Cain nodded,

"Then I guess this was all the urging we needed. All preparations should be in order?"

"I'll talk to Steve."

Cain nodded. Then he paused for a moment,

"Those three should be alright. Right?"

Hunter nodded without hesitation,

"Of course."

Cain raised a brow, clearly a bit skeptical,

"Well, a thousand seems a bit much, no? If they end up dead without killing all the beasts, the wall could be damaged."

Hunter sighed,

"Then I'll send Blaze and Jenny's squad. Happy?"

Cain snorted a laugh,

"You really love your work, don't you..."

Hunter rose to his feet with a displeased expression crumpling up his brows,

'If I have to deal with any more of these idiots, I'll go insane!' was the look he had on his face.

'I guess he deserves break once all this is sorted out.' Cain thought to himself with a chuckle.

Then he sighed.

As for him, he had a lot on his table at the moment.

Looking down, he let out a sigh. Thankfully, once he was done with all this, he could finally get out there to stretch his legs a bit.

***

Dust and smaller rocks rose off the surface of the ground by at least an inch dhe to the tremors caused by almost a thousand abominable beings marching towards them.

Calio swallowed hard,

"I-It's been twenty minutes already, Vincent. Let's just accept our fate."

Vincent shook his head,

"Now's not the time to be despairin', lad."

'Why did your accent change?!'

Vincent turned to Manny who looked like he couldn't contain it any more.

He clicked his tongue,

"Fine. We have no choice but to fight, I guess. Reinforcements should already be on the way, but we might as well get started."

"And I thought you'd gone all soft on me, Vinny-boy!"

Manny's voice slowly changed into something more guttural and terrifying as his body transformed as well.

His wildly swaying green hair grew longer until it swept across his lower back.

Two long, curved horns jutted out of his temples and his body began to grow as well as dozens of strange runic patterns broke out across the surface of his skin.

However, the most obvious change, were the arms that jutted out of what now appeared to be an eight feet tall monstrosity with six arms, each one holding a large blade.

Standing at full height, Manny now looked very similar to an actual Devil.

However, there were quite a few differences.

For one, his exoskeletal armor didn't seem quite as developed, and in some parts of his body, he had none at all.

His form also seemed more... regal, in a sense.

Almost like a devilish incarnation of some sword wielding Deity.

In any case, he looked really cool.

Vincent looked up at him and clicked his tongue,

"Damn it. This transformation of yours still throws me off. You even develop an alter ego. Isn't that too unfair?"

"Eh? What are you talking about, Vinny-boy..." Manny, or rather, Devil Manny said in his disjointed, guttural voice.

Vincent waved his hand,

"Don't worry about it. Now, let's see..."

White radiance flashed between his fingers as he equipped himself as well.

A pair of strange looking googles appeared around his head.

A pair of gauntlets covered in strange, but beautiful looking runes appeared as well.

Next was a set of chest plates, boots, and pauldrons.

And finally, an enormous... cannon? appeared in his grasp...

Despite its size, Vincent easily brandished it before smacking its side,

"This baby is rough to handle. But her firepower's the real deal. Pretty neat, huh?"

Devil Manny looked down,

"Damn."

Vincent guffawed, "I know, right?"

He paused for a moment then turned to Calio.

Devil Manny turned around as well.

Seeing the expectant look in both their eyes, Calio shifted uncomfortably,

"W-what..."

Vincent raised a brow,

"Well? What are you waiting for? Gear up. We are diving in headfirst!"

"Yeah!"

Devil Manny's roar made Calio tremble in fear.

With a sigh, he pulled his equipment from his inventory as well.

A set of light, leather armor, as well as a beautiful looking, eastern-style curved blade. Its sheath had a tone of different runes that seemed to come together to form a web-like pattern.

Vincent and Devil Manny nodded in approval,

"Looks good."

A look of grim determination settled on Calio's face as he drew his blade,

"Let's get this over with."
