CHAPTER TEN: FRIEND
CHAPTER TEN: FRIEND
One of the masked Anbu members, using a camouflage jutsu, observed Gilgamesh surviving a fall from a two-story building unharmed and taking off. The Anbu ninja felt dread and regret for taking a short nap and not keeping an eye on the boy. The masked ninja and another followed Gilgamesh silently.
‘They must be using some form of cloaking technique, with the way their chakra is trying to cover them like a blanket, but to me and my eyes, it’s all futile. I can see them clearly and even identify the colour of their clothing,’ Gilgamesh thought as he raced forward. He continued until he was not too far from the base of the mountain.
“It’s exactly as I saw it in my vision,” Gilgamesh said as another vision filled his mind. He saw the blonde man fighting a masked man with chains and teleporting to a peculiar-looking kunai that somehow passed through the masked man’s head and hit him with a decent-sized blue ball of chakra that damaged his attacker.
He continued seeing this man saving the village and eventually getting impaled by the nine-tailed beast (yes, it’s a fox, but Gilgamesh refers to the fox as a beast in his thoughts). The baby was then taken in by the current serving Hokage, The Third's feelings were conveyed to him as if he were watching a movie. The Third didn’t involve himself directly with Naruto to protect him from others who could connect him to the Fourth Hokage and take advantage. He then saw how badly Naruto had been treated so far because he was known to be the host (Jinchuriki) of the nine-tailed demon fox that almost destroyed their village and claimed some lives. He was treated as if he was the demon fox himself.
But what surprised Gilgamesh the most was that when he read the boy's true feelings like a book, he only saw little to no trace of malice but only sadness and a sense of wanting to belong and be accepted by his village.
In the body of a little boy, Gilgamesh couldn’t help but shed a tear that blended with the rain that ran down his face.
More visions about his future came into view as Gilgamesh did his best not to see too much of it.
“Just how, just how can he still smile after everything that has been done to him? He is truly a hero, a diamond in the rough. This boy, no, this Hero is truly amazing. He has even managed to affect me a little.” Gilgamesh smiled as the rain began to drizzle and the clouds parted a little for the sun to shine down on him.
‘Let’s pay him a visit.’ Gilgamesh thought as he ran towards where he last sensed Naruto’s chakra. The Anbu ninjas followed him in stealth to his new location and were surprised when they found Gilgamesh in front of Naruto’s door. Gilgamesh knocked at the door a few times without getting any response and knocked again and again until a prepubescent boy's voice could be heard scowling inside.
“What now gramps?” Naruto opened the door without asking who was behind it since the only person who might give him surprise night visits would be The Third.
‘Gramps?’ Gilgamesh thought as he was taken aback by the sudden revelation. ‘What does he mean by this?’
“Oh... It’s just you lil Gil… Wait a minute, how’d you know where to find me?” Naruto asked as his face beamed with happiness. For a moment a thought about breaking Naruto’s spirit flashed through Gilgamesh’s thoughts; he wanted to see what Naruto would become if he decided to stop caring about getting the village's acknowledgment.
“Oh, I simply sensed you nearby that’s all,” Gilgamesh said with a smile.
“Hmm… Are you sure it’s not the old man at the Ramen shop asking you to bring me back to pay for some ramen he gave me for free?” Naruto turned his face to the side as if to stare down Gilgamesh’s soul and look for any trace of betrayal. He had been alone without friends for the longest of times and now suddenly one he met just recently wanted to hang out with him, he couldn’t help but feel suspicious.
Gilgamesh simply walked in, basically inviting himself in since Naruto took his time to do so.
“Hmm, I expected more. Where are your servants and entertainers?” Gilgamesh spread his arms and joked around.
“Well, some of them have left to do other things and stuff haha… wait don’t touch that!” Naruto called out to Gilgamesh in haste as he quickly closed the door behind him.
“Unbelievable, he is already making friends with the village outcast. I have no business in these matters but this boy would be setting himself up for scorn if he continues.” One of the Anbu ninjas watching commented to the other.
“Yeah, I know. But I guess he’s still a kid and doesn’t know how things work here in the village.” The other commented.
“I agree with you both. He is still a kid and he needs friends.”
“What in the?” The former Anbu ninja exclaimed and backed away along with the other.
“Oh, it’s Kakashi. I didn’t even sense you coming.”
“You are relieved. I’ll take it from here.” Kakashi ignored the comment and waited on the roof as the Anbu ninjas, without deactivating their camouflage jutsu, nodded and body flickered away.
“Choosing Naruto as your friend, interesting indeed Gilgamesh.” Kakashi said as he reclined on a chimney and began reading a novel. A masked ninja appeared before Kakashi, tossed him a sealed folded letter, and left immediately.
“I doubt it’s a mission since I am basically on a long-term mission with good pay to raise Gilgamesh for a time.” Kakashi muttered to himself and threw a kunai at the rope tying the letter. He had to be sure that it wasn’t an enemy that wanted to decommission him with sleeping gas, poisonous gas, wire traps, or an exploding tag and make away with both Naruto and Gilgamesh since they were the Village's most valued projects at the time. Nothing happened after a few minutes and Kakashi picked up his kunai and the letter.
Kakashi squeezed his hands as he read the letter from the Hokage and furrowed his brows.
