Chapter 174: Meeting her after a while
Steam curled up from their dishes as the waitress placed the last plate down on the wooden table with a polite bow.
Grilled saba on a bed of daikon, a bowl of rich miso soup, sizzling chicken nanban with tartar sauce, and a bubbling pot of oden sat between them.
Brandon took a bite of the saba first "Damn. This is way better than I expected."
Yverine nodded in agreement, already halfway through her bowl of rice "Japanese food is all about balance. Not too greasy, not too sweet. Just…right."
He leaned forward and dipped a piece of tofu from the oden into some mustard. "You sound like a food critic."
Munching her food, she replied "Eating and tasting food is one of the few pleasures and the reason people are still living. So we need to be careful about that."
She pointed with her chopsticks toward the chicken nanban "Try this."
Brandon picked up a piece and popped it in his mouth.
The tangy tartar sauce mixed with the crispy fried chicken and sent a jolt of flavor down his tongue.
"…Damn."
Looking at him enjoying her suggestion, she smiled faintly "Told you."
She reached across the table, nudging his oden bowl. "Combine this," she said, holding up a soft-boiled egg from her bowl, "with that," nodding to a slice of daikon in his oden. "Eat it together."
Brandon gave her a skeptical look "An egg and a radish?"
"Just trust me."
He stabbed the daikon gently with his chopsticks, split the egg, and took a bite of both together.
The soft, runny yolk melted into the juicy radish, and the savory-sweet broth brought it all together.
"Holy crap…"
Yverine lifted a slice of fish cake and placed it gently into his bowl. "Try this too."
With a nod, he tried the fish cake "Hell, this is also great."
She paused mid-bite, looking at him from under her lashes before she continued eating her food.
---
After finishing the food, Brandon leaned back slightly, resting one arm along the back of the booth "That might've been the best meal I've had all week."
Yverine finished sipping the last of her miso soup and let out a quiet hum of satisfaction, wiping her fingers with the damp towel provided earlier.
Brandon reached for his wallet, but Yverine was already ahead of him.
She stood, pulled out a black card, and handed it to the approaching waitress with a small bow.
"Wait—" Brandon also stood up. "Let me split it at least."
Yverine glanced over her shoulder with a cool look "It's fine. I invited you. And besides… you paid with your reactions. That was more entertaining than cash."
The waitress returned with the receipt, bowing politely and Yveriene quickly paid.
A bit later, both of them stood up and reached for the door to leave.
Just as Brandon reached out to push the door open, another hand reached from the other side at the same time and pulled the door slightly.
Hm? He paused and turned his head toward the person coming in.
A beautiful woman with long purple hair and purple eyes was standing in front of him wearing dark purple cloak.
Huh? He blinked in surprise, looking at her "Lucienne..?"
The woman lowered her gaze faintly "What a surprise, Lord Herald. To meet you in a place like this..."
Yveriene felt a chill down her spine looking at Luienne and she instantly tensed 'Who... is this? She is hella strong... Heck, even stronger than Master?'
But then she recognized the woman standing in front of her 'She is... Lucienne d'Albret. One of the two Empyreans of Rheanne Church.'
Brandon let out a quiet exhale and stepped forward, gently pushing the door open with one hand. "Let's go out and speak…"
[A/N: Chapter 83, the first time he saw her]
Lucienne gave a graceful nod and stepped aside, allowing them both to exit first.
Outside, the night air was crisp and gentle, tinged with the scent of distant rain and the glow of streetlamps reflecting off the slick pavement.
The city hummed quietly in the background, distant car horns and neon lights blinking in the mist.
Brandon led them to the side of the restaurant, where a covered walkway led to a quiet corner shaded by a cherry blossom tree still glistening with rain.
Yverine remained silent, standing a bit off to the side with her arms crossed.
She kept glancing between Lucienne and Brandon, her mind racing in thought.
Brandon turned to face Lucienne fully "I didn't expect to see you here, Lucienne."
The woman inclined her head respectfully, strands of her hair catching the faint breeze. "The feeling is mutual, Lord Herald."
Brandon gave her a tired smile with his hands casually in his pockets. "Are you clearing a tower nearby?"
Lucienne nodded her head "Yes. I arrived in Japan yesterday. There's been a sudden spike in tower formations across this region. Even the Church's analysts are puzzled by the acceleration. As one of the Empyreans, I must see to it personally."
Brandon hummed softly. That explained her presence, and it aligned with what he already knew.
Callista and Lucienne both are the Empyreans of the Rheanne Church.
Callista mostly stays in the church to look after the stuff there and if the capital faced any threat.
Meanwhile, Lucienne goes out to do her Empyrean duties and clear towers and dungeons.
She glanced at Yveriene and muttered in a low voice "I see that you are enjoying your personal time with your... girlfriend, I suppose."
Yveriene blinked her eyes and replied in a solemn tone "I am not his girlfriend. I am his senior; that's all."
Luceinne's gaze flickered to Brandon "I apologize for misunderstanding."
Brandon shook his head with a sigh "It's alright."
"Well then," she said, brushing back a strand of her long hair.
"I won't intrude on your evening further. I'll be staying in the capital district here for a few more days, should you wish to speak again."
"Are you alone?" Brandon asked.
Lucienne paused and gave a nod "Yes. As usual."
A cherry blossom petal drifted between them, landing on the toe of Lucienne's boot.
She looked at it briefly, then back at him "Until next time, Lord Herald."
He nodded his head "Hmm.."
And with that, she turned and began walking down the dimly lit street.
Yverine exhaled slowly once she was gone. "That woman is… something else."
Hearing this, Brandon couldn't help but chuckle.
She looked at him in the corner of her eyes 'Even at that party, there were three Empyreans in his table...'
'Just how many god-tier women are revolving in his orbit?'
As they continued walking, Yveriene spotted a vending machine by the side "Let's grab some drinks."
Brandon followed her gaze and nodded "Sure."
Walking to the vending machine, Brandon saw a woman standing in front of the machine to get a drink.
