Chapter 727: The Twisted Imperial Family
The sun rose gently over the royal city, casting a soft golden hue over the jade roofs and silver-tipped towers of the palace. Soft music woke Noah and Xin Yan up from their intimate sleep.
Under the sheets, they were both lying in their birthday suits. Their bodies had red marks of passion, but despite all of that, Noah and Xin Yan had yet to cross the final line. They knew once they started, they would not stop until they were satisfied, and that was going to take more than one day.
They could enter the tower, but Noah did not feel like it was the correct moment.
Xin Yan's eyes fluttered open only to see a pair of golden eyes staring at her. Seeing this, she cooed in his arms and planted a needy kiss on his lips.
Soon, they got out of the bed. Noah waved his hand, covering them with clothes instantly, hiding the marks on their bodies.
After they were done cleaning up, Noah went to the balcony of his guest chamber, enjoying the tea and watching the view while thinking about the things he had to do later on. Today, he was to meet the emperor's harem and children. He already knew what kind of show this would be.
The thought alone brought him a wave of unseen burden and headache. As if sensing his tension, a pair of arms wrapped around his torso from behind, pressing the two mounds against his back.
Noah let out a relaxed and contented sigh before turning around. He pulled Xin Yan into a hug with one arm while placing the tea up on the railing.
"I don't know what I would do without you." Noah whispered with a chuckle, leaning in with clear intentions. Xin Yan pushed her feet against the ground a little, closing her eyes, but then…
Knock! Knock!
Noah sighed with resignation while Xin Yan turned to look at the door as if it was her mortal enemy. Even the floor around her had turned frosty, snowflakes falling around her.
Noah smiled wryly and patted her head; the action froze her thoughts before the ice melted from his touch. All of her dissatisfaction dissolved.
Noah walked past her and opened the door. Standing there was a middle-aged eunuch, calmly waiting for him, not knowing what kind of disaster he had escaped.
"Your Excellency, the Emperor invites you to the Morning Garden," the eunuch smiled at Noah warmly while greeting him.
"Lead the way," Noah replied calmly, hiding the killing intent blazing from Xin Yan. He looked over his shoulder and nodded towards her. The two of them left the room and arrived at the Morning Garden.
It was a sprawling courtyard filled with flowering plum trees, koi ponds, and carved stone pathways. A group of finely dressed women stood under a pavilion, their gowns flowing like petals in the wind. A few steps away stood the royal children, each marked by noble bearing and proud eyes.
"Allow me to introduce emissary Noah. The envoy of the Feng Empire," the head eunuch announced as he entered.
The conversations halted. Dozens of eyes turned toward him.
Noah offered a greeting, composed and respectful. "It is an honor to meet the imperial family of Quan."
The queen, a young woman who appeared to be in her thirties, young by the standards of the cultivators and definitely too young-looking compared to the emperor.
Some of the concubines were older in age, but none of them looked a day over fifty. A few even appeared to be younger than 20 years old, but Noah was sure their ages were way different than what they appeared to be.
Watching some of the women, princesses included, eying him like a piece of meat and the princes acting like they found some sort of treasure, Noah groaned inwardly. 'This is going to be a long stay.'
In the days that followed, the palace was unusually lively. Noah had breakfast in the Emperor's company on several occasions, accompanied by royal sons and daughters, each vying for subtle influence.
He played his role well—sharing bits of stories, asking questions, and never revealing too much.
But he never revealed the true reason he was living in the palace, even when he had fun watching kids and even the members of the harem trying to get information out of him using the tricks he called 'childish.'
Every morning, the same scene unfolded. He would be joined by two or three princesses, trying to strike up conversation under the guise of courtly curiosity.
"Lord Noah, have you ever studied flute music? I could play for you sometime," one offered.
"You must try the peach blossom wine made by our palace brewer," said another. "It's divine. Would you join me for a weekly tasting?"
'Weekly tasting?! Are you sure you are not just looking for excuses to get drunk?' Noah started to wonder if these girls had been living so strictly that all of a sudden their hormones were through the roof.
Before he could even get a chance to refuse them, Xin Yan's presence would manifest behind him like a cold wind. She would look down at the little girls who were only teenagers like falling snow, expressionless but suffocating.
No words, just a gaze.
That was all she needed to scare them away.
The girls would retreat with tight smiles, their pride wounded. But on the other hand, their interest only piqued further; they started to dream about dating the mysterious, handsome envoy.
The thought alone made their maiden hearts beat crazily, just like they read in those forbidden stories.
The girls were one thing. Noah also started getting visited by the concubines of the emperor.
A few of the ones who had lost favor with the emperor tried to get close to him through means of seduction, trying out their mature charms. They would not approach him in the daylight or before witnesses, but instead they would meet him by 'accident' or ask for his help with things in their personal quarters.
But then… Xin Yan would appear.
They even made a name for her: the Chilling Mistress of Death.
Even though they feared Xin Yan because of her imposing aura and clear relations to the man, there was still someone bold enough to try her luck.
Lady Wen Ji.
The surprising thing about her? She was one of the emperor's favored concubines.
