Chapter 724: The Unrest and The Questions

The head of the guards stepped forward and greeted Noah and Xin Yan, "Welcome, honored guests. The Emperor awaits your arrival."

The grand entrance to the palace opened behind the guard. Noah and Xin Yan were led inside by the maids waiting at the gate. Some of the guards and the maids were entranced by the appearance of the duo, but none of them stepped out of line to create trouble.

The maid was wearing a delicate green silk dress, her movements precise and trained. Her head was bowed as she guided them through winding corridors, past moon-gate arches, and under carvings of ancient wars and divine beasts.

'I noticed this before, but for some reason the royal palaces like to have their past wars, the ones they won, carved on their ceilings or walls.' Noah nudged Xin Yan's hand with his pinkie finger.

'Isn't that normal? I thought you would have seen many of those in your past life as well.' Xin Yan sent a transmission of her own; the cold expression on her face broke a little, but not enough for anyone to notice.

'I have seen a few, not a lot.' Noah shook his head, watching the history being displayed on the walls. 'But what I did realize about them was none of them show the real past.'

Noah's eyes landed on an image when he continued. 'Everyone highlights themselves as the righteous warriors who won the war through their bravery and benevolence.'

The image belonged to a man who stood above all, looking down at them with a gentle look on his face; his palms glowed with divine light as he blessed everyone.

'Indeed, they all sweep the ugliness and the dirt under their beds, not letting anyone else see it.' Xin Yan seemed to have thought of something and agreed with his words blankly. She turned her head towards the front when she realized that they had reached their destination.

Noah also glanced at the closed entrance to the Sky Jade Pavilion. The doors stood three stories tall, engraved with dragons and lotuses. As they swung open, the sight within unveiled itself before his eyes.

The hall beyond the gates was vast and high; it was supported by towering pillars carved from qi-tempered jade.

Above them, the ceiling arched in the shape of a dome. It was painted with drifting clouds and stars that shimmered faintly on their own.

The magical ceiling had a magnetic charm in the room, but it was not the only source of light.

On the sides, before the pillars in the room, spirit flames flickered silently, suspended in the air without any origin or support.

Noah could hear their footsteps echoing softly when they walked into the room, stepping on the central carpet.

At the far end of the chamber, elevated by a platform of seven steps, the Emperor of the Quan Empire sat with calm authority on a silver throne made of precious materials, embedded with Yin pearls and Yin jade.

His gaze was steady, his robes a mixture of light red and imperial gold, flowing around his figure.

Age had not dulled the sharpness in his eyes; he looked not at the world as a ruler, but as a man who had long since learned to see through it.

Behind the throne was a sea green-colored curtain that draped from the ceiling. On the curtain was the insignia of a serpent coiled around a golden trident.

Noah's eyes first went towards the familiar bird that delivered him the invitation to the meeting.

Then he noticed the three figures standing, facing the emperor, their backs towards him and Xin Yan.

Noah didn't need to see their faces.

He already knew who they were.

The leaders of the Three Great Sects!

The dead giveaway was the bald head of the abbot, whom he had seen before.

The Emperor's voice cut through the silence, clear and unhurried. "I officially welcome you to my Quan Empire, Noah of the Feng Empire." As he spoke, his eyes landed on the golden token tied to Noah's waist that had the word 'Feng' engraved on it. "This emperor recognizes your authority as the envoy of the Feng Empire."

As those words left his mouth, the three figures standing in the middle of the room turned around to face Noah.

Aside from the abbot standing in the middle, the two other figures looked to be younger in appearance.

One of them was a middle-aged woman, who appeared to be in her thirties, with sharp eyes, curved brows, and freckled skin. She had her hair tied in a neat bun, giving others the feeling that she was a stern teacher, but there was also a flicker of mischievousness tugging at the corner of her lips.

Noah recalled her name from his memories: Lady Lianxue.

To the abbot's left was a man who appeared to be similar in age to Lady Lianxue.

Contrary to the stern lady, this man had an easygoing look on his face. His lightning-like eyebrows matched his receding hairline that even his high cultivation could not save.

Noah and Xin Yan greeted them all with polite nods after they greeted the emperor with a formal salute. The formalities stretched on like silken threads—thin, decorative, and ultimately unnecessary.

Noah answered the expected questions with practiced ease. Xin Yan offered polite nods at the right moments, her voice absent but her presence unshakable.

The seemingly probing came to an end when the emperor got restless, presumably thinking about the threat looming in his kingdom.

"I shall speak plainly," the Emperor said, his voice low and absolute. "We do not sit here for diplomacy, and this is not a banquet. Abbot Liang Chen has already relayed everything that had happened at the temple and how young warrior Noah helped save one of the three greatest sects."

His gaze bore into Noah now—steady, probing. Despite how unbelievable it sounded, he had to come to terms with the fact that someone so young who came from another empire managed to make an expert even he would have trouble dealing with, especially after the three sects testified to the statement.

"It seems that you have a very decent amount of experience dealing with these people. So, I want you to explain to me very clearly…"

The emperor leaned slightly forward, the folds of his robe shifting as he moved. The sect leaders beside the abbot also turned their attention towards Noah, their expressions turning solemn as the emperor laid down the final words.

"What exactly is the Red Dawn Cult?"
