Chapter 718: Submission
Hong Mei's ears twitched when she heard Qiuan Yu's feminine voice. She moved away from Chen Wuji, who stood there with a blank look on his face. The sudden hug from the woman crashed his high-level spirit and mind, making him unable to think or speak anything.
Right before their eyes, Wuhan threw the lotus in the air; it drifted towards XingJian, and once it appeared beside the prism that had just finished tearing her soul apart, it tilted and let the drop of magical liquid inside fall on the spectral figure of the woman.
The drop fell like a tear from the heavens.
It touched the writhing soul.
Drip.
As the Dew of Soul Rebirth seeped into XingJian's fractured essence, a soft chime echoed through the hall.
Gentle waves of pale-blue light radiated from her soul, washing over the chamber like calm tides smoothing a storm-battered shore.
The tendrils of pain were all sucked into the prism; the soul body that had fallen into a dormant state stirred once more.
The cracks along the soul's surface began to mend, thread by glowing thread. XingJian's soul groaned and moaned unconsciously—not in pain, but from the ecstasy of having her injuries being healed.
Her spectral body sagged in the air, exhausted but at peace.
Chen Wuji let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.
Beside him, Hong Mei wiped her tears with the sleeve of her robe, her lips trembling. Even San Ji seemed to straighten slightly, though his fists remained clenched.
Wuhan lowered his hand. The lotus returned to his grasp, now faint and dim, its energy spent. The prism followed suit; it gently drifted down, now darkened, humming softly as it sealed itself.
"She'll live," he said, finally breaking the silence. "She should wake up soon, now that her soul has recovered."
While speaking, Wuhan pushed her soul body back into her body, and they merged effortlessly like two pieces of a puzzle locking in together.
"XingJian?" Hong Mei took a step forward, hesitant.
The woman's eyes fluttered open.
She gasped—
Not like one returning from sleep, but as if pulled back from drowning. Her hands gripped the floor, breath ragged, eyes wide with the horrors of the pain she had suffered still fresh in them.
"Argh!" She tried to get up, but her body did not seem to agree with her decisions and resisted. The restraints around her body gradually disappeared, and she almost fell on the hard floor before an invisible force stopped her from colliding.
Hong Mei bit her lips seeing her current state; she took a step forward when hesitation washed over her. Biting her lips, she withdrew her foot back.
"Take your time; you have experienced pain worse than anything." Wuhan spoke in an oddly gentle tone, "Your body is not the source of your pain."
With his qi, he lifted her body and made her sit on her chair, which had been thrown backwards from all the commotion.
"What happened…" As she was settled in the chair, XingJian held tightly on her head as several images flashed through her mind. She stayed silent for a moment before letting out a long, strained sigh. "To think even my sect has been in danger all along, and I was clueless about it and even got myself compromised."
She clenched her hands into a fist and berated herself in a tone full of bitterness.
Finally her gaze fell on Wuhan, and the words she had said to him surfaced in her mind, making her flinch in the seat. With a blush, she stood up from the seat; this time it felt less painful.
With her hands resting on her waist, she lowered herself to bow to the man. "XingJian thanks the emperor for his timely assistance and preventing her from committing the sin of betraying her birthland."
Those heartfelt words coming from her made everyone recall the pain she went through, but the next words coming out of her mouth brought their attention back to the woman.
"I can now personally attest to the fact that the threat of this force is more severe than all of us can ever imagine." She glanced at the others with an encouraging yet firm gaze when she said, "In light of the recent events,. I, XingJian, the leader of the Zither-wave Sect, submit to the Feng Empire."
This time she bowed deeper and more inclined, like a subject greeting its ruler.
The others were surprised, but thinking of the ordeal the woman had gone through, they could understand why she made the decision.
Doubts started to creep into their minds…
They wondered what would have happened if they were the ones who had been in her place.
Chen Wuji's brows furrowed, watching XingJian's lowered head. The once-proud leader of the Zither-wave Sect, who would never bend even in the face of death, now humbled herself with sincere words and an unshakable resolve.
A silence lingered in the room, thick and heavy—until San Ji stepped forward.
"I'm not one for politics," he grumbled, scratching his head. "But I saw what happened here. I'm not blind." He looked at XingJian, then at Wuhan. "We've got enemies playing with our very souls, and only one man here saw it coming."
He looked down for a moment and gave a long exhale.
"I may not like your methods, Your Majesty," he admitted, his voice tinged with reluctant admiration, "but I respect power that protects. I, San Ji of the Tiangong Sect, stand with the Feng Empire."
He bent one knee. A short, crisp bow—no flourish, just resolve.
Qiuan Yu stepped forward next. His elegant robes shifted like flowing water, his expression unreadable.
"I've always believed in neutrality," he began. "But after witnessing this… Neutrality is no longer safety. It is foolishness."
His aged eyes turned sharp as blades.
"The soul is sacred. To watch one nearly twisted beyond return, and then healed…" He inhaled sharply, holding back the swell of emotion rising in her voice.
"I will not wait until it's one of my disciples writhing in chains before I act. The Xuanyin Sect hereby pledges allegiance to the Feng Empire." He bowed deeply, his voice steady and graceful.
"My Spirit Lotus Sect is unable to deal with a threat like this on its own, so I implore the Emperor to lend a hand to this lowly subordinate." It was none other than Chen Wuji who spoke this time, shocking everyone else with his words.
