Chapter 604: The Test

"You can admire this place later; we have places to be." Hearing this, Song Liu took a deep breath, composed herself, and walked out of the garden with Amon leading the group.

"Why not teleport directly inside this place?" Song Liu asked as they walked. She saw Amon grinning maliciously from the corner of her eyes. The look sent a shiver down her spine, feeling something was off.

"Who said there was not a teleportation portal inside this place?" he said with a chuckle. The previous coldness he had shown had toned down a little, which again puzzled her, but what Chen Ming said to her next made the girl tremble a bit.

"That cave opening was nothing but a fake entrance. If someone who is not a member of the cult, or if someone who has not been fully baptized, tries to infiltrate this place, they will be obliterated when they try to touch the gates of the cave."

"So that was a test?" Surprisingly, Song Liu calmed down soon and did not appear to be fazed by what she had heard.

"Haha! Of course it was. Didn't you see charred grass in front of the gates?" Song Liu did not say anything and stayed silent, turning her attention towards the beauty of the space around her. But for some reason, the place did not appear as beautiful to her as it first had. Seeing her silence, Amon also did not bother saying anything.

Soon, they appeared on the path leading to the castle. To their sides were artistically shaped bushes, with gaps of sitting areas in between each one of them. In these areas, Song Liu noticed very lifelike statues of people with pointed ears.

Each of the statues had a horrified look on their faces, their eyes screaming with dread and pain.

Although curious, Song Liu stayed silent, moving her gaze away. Her eyes slowly lost their vibrance and turned cold with each step she took.

Soon, the three of them found themselves standing at the front of the castle. The walls of the castle shimmered with a pearl-like glow, and its gates were open as if ready to welcome them inside. From up close, she could see that the several engravings on the castle were not patterns but images showing different stories.

The first image she saw was the biggest of them all, showing the image of a very tall tree. Before the tree were several people with long ears, bowing to it as if they were worshiping the tree.

Before she could focus on the picture, something else distracted her mind. She saw a flash of glittering colors fluttering from the corner of her eye. Upon focusing, she realized that the thing fluttering was nothing but a beautiful butterfly.

The palm-sized thing may not appear as enchanting as the Space Burning Butterfly, but it was not far away. She only took her eyes off the butterfly when her feet crossed the entrance of the castle and entered the lobby.

As soon as they entered, they saw a huge stairway leading to the next floor of the castle. On their current floor, there was nothing but some decorations and a huge carpet that led to the Y-shaped stairway.

Looking around the hallway, Song Liu's gaze unconsciously—or consciously—moved in the direction of the darkness underneath the stairway. She merely glanced at that place before looking away at Amon, waiting for him to lead the way.

Amon had also stopped in the hallway for a second. He gave Chen Ming a small nod. "You can stay here; we will continue on ahead."

With a subtle bow to both of them, Chen Ming stepped aside. Amon shifted his focus to the young lady beside him and added, "From now on, follow me closely. Don't wander around."

Saying that, he started walking in the direction of the stairway. The girl obediently followed behind him. Watching them walking towards the next floor, Chen Ming's expression shifted before he walked towards the darkness beneath the staircase.

The next second, a pair of white eyes flashed in the darkness, gleaming with an ominous light. A pair of canine teeth also flashed, making the sight horrifying as if it were straight from someone's nightmare.

"Who is that young lady, to have the privilege to walk beside the likes of General Amon while staying alive and even have the honor to join such an important meeting?" A hoarse voice came from the mouth as Chen Ming walked towards it.

"She is special," the man replied. "Enough to make our general fight for life just to acquire her."

"Oh, she is that special, huh?" The voice tried to sound amused but only came off as horrifying. "It's no wonder that she managed to find me in this state."

The darkness seemed to shake when a set of heavy footsteps sounded. Chen Ming paused when the features of the being hidden in the shadow became more visible.

"I would love to hear everything about her," the voice added. From the darkness emerged a bony palm, like those of very old people on the verge of death. The nails on the fingers were the size of someone's thumb as the hand poked at Chen Ming's chest.

Chen Ming stood there unflinching at the sight but let out a resigned sigh. Shaking his head, the man walked inside the darkness himself.

...

The hallway of the second floor was unlike the one on the first floor. It moved in a long straight line, showing the beautiful view of the garden on one side and a set of rooms on the other side.

Song Liu could hear the sounds of her and Amon's footsteps as they walked in the silent path. Their walk was longer than she had imagined. Amon kept changing direction while leading her, and they went through different hallways, and some hidden rooms.

By the time they came to a stop, Song Liu had no idea how many different scenes she had seen on their way or where they were even standing. She could feel something was even trying to tamper with her perception of direction, but it barely had any effect on her.

As they stopped, a huge gate appeared before the two of them. The gate looked different from the ones she had seen on her way here. Amon glanced at her once more before raising his hand to push the door open.
