Chapter 73: Villain Simulator, Ch 249
"What are you trying to do?" Even the Doctor furrowed her brows in confusion. "Suicide is hardly a quality worth admiring."
"I'm showing you another of my qualities," Lucas replied, pulling the trigger. "Courage."
Click! Click! Click! Click! Click!
He pulled the trigger five times in quick succession, without a hint of hesitation.
The Doctor was momentarily stunned but then burst out laughing. "You're quite an interesting one. Were you not afraid that one of those pulls might end with a bullet in your head?"
"Terrified," Lucas admitted, then pressed the trigger one last time. "But more importantly, I'm quick."
Click.
The revolver didn't fire. Lucas opened his palm, revealing the single bullet resting within.
Russian roulette was, after all, a type of gamble. Using his Gambling Prodigy talent, Lucas had removed the final bullet during loading with such speed that even the Doctor hadn't noticed.
"I didn't expect you to have such skill," the Doctor said with a nod. "Working for me may help you achieve your goals, but the process will be grueling. Even so… are you willing to proceed?"
"I already know too much. Refusing wouldn't end well for me," Lucas said, setting down the revolver with a smirk. "I'm a ghost crawling out of hell. Tell me—what's worse than hell?"
"There's always something worse," the Doctor replied. "The Fatui exist precisely to change this hellish world." She extended her hand with a smile. "Welcome to the team, avenger."
A withered hand and a slender one clasped together.
Lucas's life entered a new chapter.

[Mission Complete: Escape the Prison]
[Reward Acquired: Lockpicking Skill]
Effect: You've learned the art of lockpicking. Success depends on the lock's difficulty and your agility attribute.
Description: "Give me a pack of instant noodles, and I can unlock half the neighborhood."
[You've officially forged a collaboration with the Fatui's Doctor, who shared the Fatui's plans with you.]
[The Fatui intend to groom a Liyue native, sparing no resources, to elevate them to the ranks of the Liyue Qixing. This operative would act as an inside agent.]
[Why not recruit an existing member of the Liyue Qixing? The reason is simple: it's too difficult. Those who become Qixing undergo rigorous testing, are steadfast in their principles, and are nearly impossible to sway. Furthermore, in such a high-profile position, any signs of corruption would be easily noticed.]
[Grooming someone from the start ensures greater success and control, as their weaknesses can be exploited.]
[This left you with mixed feelings. After all, your father's secret dealings with the Fatui had destroyed your family. Alongside Yelan and Ningguang, the Fatui were among your targets for revenge.]
[But a true avenger knows when to endure humiliation for the sake of a larger goal. You agreed "willingly."]
[The process was as excruciating as promised.]
[The first challenge was the iron mask. Not only was it a dead giveaway if Yelan saw you, but it also made you stand out far too much.]
[The mask had fused with your skin over time. Removing it was far more painful than having it affixed. To stay alert, you refused full sedation, and the local anesthesia barely dulled the agony.]
[Yet for revenge, you endured it. The Doctor performed the surgery herself, and even with her expertise, she handled it cautiously. When the mask was finally separated from your face, even the battle-hardened Doctor inhaled sharply at the sight.]
[It could no longer be called a "face." The upper half of your skin had been almost entirely stripped away, and the muscles beneath had been deformed from prolonged compression. You looked, quite literally, like a demon.]
"If another doctor saw this, they'd be completely at a loss," the Doctor said, cracking her fingers with a grin. "Luckily for you, you have me. I'll make this face even more handsome than before… not that I know what you used to look like."
[You hadn't expected that the infamous Fatui Harbinger was also skilled in cosmetic surgery. When the bandages were removed, the face in the mirror was both familiar and foreign.]
[The lower half of your face was still your own, but the reconstructed upper half was entirely different. As the Doctor promised, it was a strikingly handsome face, with no visible signs of surgery. Even so, you still felt your original face was more pleasing.]
[Age 24: The Doctor took you to Snezhnaya, where you began an intense program of training and education. Only the best of the best could ascend to the ranks of the Liyue Qixing. The Fatui provided the finest instructors to teach you economics, politics, philosophy, and more.]
[In addition, the Doctor herself taught you medical techniques. However, her lessons focused less on healing and more on poisons.]
"You lack a Vision and haven't undergone formal combat training," she explained. "Improving your combat abilities is nearly impossible. Learning the art of toxins, however, will at least give you a means of self-defense."
[To everyone's surprise, you seemed to have a natural talent for both medicine and poison. With the Doctor as your mentor, your progress was remarkably swift (activating the talent: Medical Sage).]
[Age 25: Every day, aside from essential rest, you endured grueling training and rigorous study. The process was exhausting, but the thought of revenge kept you going.]
[Age 26: Your progress was visible to the naked eye. In just three years, you accomplished what would take most people a decade. Finally, you received your first mission: to return to Liyue and become one of the Liyue Qixing.]
[Becoming one of the Qixing had been a childhood dream. But now, the dream had transformed into a mission. Your reasons for seeking the position had long since changed.]
