Chapter 64: This Is Enough
Seeing that Felina could not accept his terms and had taken an unwavering stance to continue fighting, Zhongli frowned slightly and spoke again.
"In that case, I will take another step back."
"I will allow them to leave, and I will not place a mark on their souls."
"But you must be the one to place a mark on their souls! Additionally, you must sign a contract with me: if they ever attack Liyue, you will be obligated to detonate the mark and kill them!"
Zhongli's gaze locked onto Felina.
"If you wish to save them, then you should take responsibility for them, should you not?"
"You claim to be their friend. If that is true, even if you place the mark on their souls, you would still remain their friend. After all, you wouldn't use the mark to enslave them, would you?"
"Moreover, do you not trust that they won't attack Liyue in the future? If so, what harm would leaving the mark do?"
"Unless… you do not truly see them as friends, or perhaps you yourself cannot guarantee that they won't seek revenge against Liyue!"
After finishing, Zhongli lowered his head to glance at Osial and Beisht below, his tone carrying a subtle implication.
"Or perhaps… they don't trust you and wouldn't dare to let you leave the mark."
Zhongli's meaning was clear.
If you, Felina, want to help them, then you must take responsibility for them.
You believe that my placing a mark on their souls is an insult. Fine—then you, their friend, should do it instead. Surely that wouldn't be a problem?
If you are truly their friend, then you would never use the mark to enslave them. Therefore, placing the mark wouldn't harm their dignity.
If you refuse to leave a mark, then there are only three possibilities:
You have no intention of taking responsibility for them and do not truly see them as friends.
You cannot control them to prevent their revenge against Liyue—or perhaps you intend to shield them to use them against Liyue.
They are afraid that you might use the mark to enslave and control them, meaning they do not trust you. If they don't trust you, then clearly, such "friends" are not worth risking your life for.
Zhongli's words were pointed and insidious, clearly aimed at sowing discord between Felina and Osial and Beisht.
But as soon as Zhongli finished speaking, Felina's expression turned icy cold.
"I've said it before: they are my friends, and I will not mark their souls or trample on their dignity."
"If you refuse to let me take them away, then we will continue fighting! I will fight until you agree!"
As she finished speaking, Felina once again began gathering her power. Yet as her energy surged, she coughed up another mouthful of blood, her aura growing even weaker.
The blood fell from the sky, staining the seawater beside Beisht and Osial red.
Watching Felina suppress her weakness and gather her power to charge at Zhongli once more, Osial and Beisht felt as though their hearts were being torn apart.
Felina had reunited them as a couple.
Yet they had broken their agreement with her, not only bringing disaster upon themselves but also dragging Felina and Furina, their friends, into their troubles. Worse still, they had caused trouble for Fontaine as a whole.
Even so, they still risked everything to save them.
Even at the cost of mutual destruction, and out of respect for them, unwilling to impose a mark upon their souls, Felina and Furina continued to fight Morax with all their might.
It was nothing more than a chance encounter, nothing more than a shallow bond.
It was they who had been in the wrong first; they were the ones who had betrayed Felina.
How could they, of all beings, deserve such dedication from Felina and Furina?
The better Felina and Furina treated them, the heavier their guilt became.
Seeing Felina, injured and battered, still forcing herself to fight on, Osial and Beisht could no longer suppress their emotions.
"Enough!"
Osial roared. "Furina, that's enough!"
Osial turned to Zhongli, his eyes filled with undisguised hatred and resentment.
"Morax, save your vile attempts to sow discord between us and Furina!"
He then looked back at Felina. "Furina, we are willing to let you place a mark on our souls!"
Hearing this, Felina's expression changed slightly, and she immediately waved her hand in refusal.
"Impossible! We are friends—how could I do such a thing to you?"
"You don't need to worry about me. I'm fine. Trust me, once I defeat him, I'll take you both away."
As soon as she finished speaking, Felina prepared to charge forward into battle once more.
But Osial and Beisht raised their voices in unison. "Stop! Furina, if you keep fighting, we will end our lives right here and now!"
Felina halted instantly, snapping her head back to glare at them. "What are you doing?!"
"Enough. This has gone on long enough," Beisht said, tears shimmering in her large eyes.
"Furina, you don't need to keep pushing yourself. Your weakened state—you can't hide it from us."
"If you keep fighting, and something were to truly happen to you, what would happen to Fontaine?"
"Your kindness toward us is as vast as the ocean. If you and Fontaine were to suffer because of us, how could we possibly live with ourselves? We'd rather end our lives now to free you from any burden!"
"I—"
Felina's gaze flickered with uncertainty.
Osial and Beisht saw the hesitation in her eyes.
"Don't worry about it. Aren't we friends? Even if the mark is placed, you wouldn't harm us, right?"
"We are willing—because we trust you. That's why we are allowing you to place the mark. So don't feel burdened."
"Come, our friend. Place the mark on us. Do it for your safety and for our freedom."
In their eyes was a gentle resolve.
High above, after hearing Osial and Beisht's words, Felina clenched her fists tightly.
Her face showed undisguised anger as she turned to Zhongli.
"If I place the Mark of Destruction on their souls, will you let them go free?"
Zhongli's expression still carried a hint of fatigue, a clear sign that he was also heavily injured.
"At this point, there is no need for further meaningless probing," he said.
"As long as you place the Mark of Destruction on their souls and sign a contract with me guaranteeing they will not harm Liyue in the future, I will let them leave."
"You need not question my motives. The contamination caused by the remnants of a dead god is not a trivial matter. This area is very close to Liyue Harbor. If you can take them away and ensure they pose no threat to Liyue, it is a favorable outcome for me as well."
"You don't need to make that face. This is the result you have earned through your strength. If you had not forced me into this situation of mutual destruction, I would not have relented today."
"Make your decision. This is my final concession. If you remain dissatisfied, then we will fight to the death!"
Suspended in midair, Felina seemed to undergo an intense internal struggle. At last, she let out a deep sigh.
"Brother Osial, Sister Beisht… I am sorry."
Osial and Beisht simply smiled at her words. "There is no need to apologize. We are the ones who should be sorry."
Felina drifted to their side and extended her hand toward them.
Ultimately, the conflict ended with Felina marking Osial and Beisht's souls with the Mark of Destruction and signing a contract with Zhongli. According to the agreement, if Osial and Beisht ever acted against Liyue, Felina would be obligated to detonate the marks, erasing their souls.
"Morax, we agree to let go of our hatred—not because we submit to you, but because of Furina!"
"If there ever comes a day when you or your nation harm Furina or Fontaine, we, as husband and wife, will fight you and your nation to the death!"
Osial cast a cold glance at Zhongli before allowing the injured Felina to sit atop his head. Together with his wife, Beisht, he left the Lone Cloud Pavilion and headed toward Fontaine.
Osial and Beisht carried Felina away.
Liyue returned to peace once more.
Only after confirming that Osial's aura could no longer be sensed, and ensuring they had traveled far away, did Zhongli finally let out a sigh of relief and descend from the sky.
"Lord Morax, are you all right?"
The assembled adepti quickly gathered around him.
"I've sustained some injuries, expended too much energy, and am feeling a bit dizzy," Zhongli said, rubbing his head.
"She really didn't hold back," he added with a wry sigh.
Seeing the Geo Archon in such a state, several of the adepti couldn't help but chuckle.
"Well, without going all out, it would've been impossible to fool that ancient god Osial," said Mountain Shaper with a nod.
"But the Hydro Archon's strategy was truly remarkable!"
Cloud Retainer commented with a hint of disdain, "Hmph, perhaps it fooled you, but this Adeptus is not so easily deceived. Do not presume to speak on my behalf!"
Mountain Shaper bristled. "What nonsense is that?!"
Mountain Shaper chuckled as he observed the scene. "In any case, resolving the hidden threat of Osial in such a manner is ultimately a good outcome."
"Indeed," Zhongli nodded in agreement.
"During the Archon War, all gods were forced into battle. In the end, only seven remained, becoming the Seven Archons of the earthly realm."
"Osial and I were enemies, not allies. But the slaughter of that era was driven by necessity. If not required, I would not wish to drive anyone to complete annihilation."
"Under the order imposed by Celestia, gods outside the Seven will inevitably perish for various reasons unless they submit themselves to the Seven and become their subordinates. Only then can they survive under the heavenly order."
To Zhongli, Felina truly embodied the essence of water itself.
Her personality, like water, was both gentle and fierce.
Toward her friends, she was as gentle as a flowing stream. But to those who encroached on her or her nation's interests, she was as unrelenting as a torrential flood.
The longer one lives, the more companions one loses. In his 6,000 years, Zhongli had lost far too many.
For those like him, memories became the only way to revisit old friendships.
At his age, even former foes no longer seemed so detestable.
It was akin to a 90-year-old man reminiscing about the rival who fought him daily during middle school—only to smile, shake his head, and marvel at the carefree days of youth.
Osial was indeed his enemy, but time had lent a certain significance even to that relationship.
As a fellow ruler, Zhongli could empathize with Felina deeply.
High office required her, as an Archon, to act with meticulous calculation for the good of her nation.
But this did not mean she was a deceitful schemer.
Yes, she desired the power of Osial and Beisht. But her sincerity toward them was real, as was her desire to help them.
Her role as a ruler, however, required her to take responsibility for her people and her nation.
Thus, while she genuinely cared for Osial and Beisht, she also had to make meticulous preparations, including leaving the Mark of Destruction on their souls.
As she herself said, as a ruler, she could treat others kindly. But she also had to plan for contingencies, even if those plans would never be used.
This was her duty to her nation and its people.
It was the unavoidable burden of being a ruler. And Felina had done her utmost to find a balance between personal emotions and national interests.
Zhongli trusted that Felina would treat Osial and Beisht well.
In this encounter, one played the stern role, the other the compassionate role. Together, they had secured Osial and Beisht's trust while also establishing control measures for the future.
Meanwhile, Morax had successfully removed the last great threat to Liyue.
As for Osial and Beisht becoming Felina's followers, living as freely as possible in Fontaine, the nation of water—this was the best possible resolution for his ancient adversary.
Though Felina had maneuvered and calculated, she had also genuinely helped them, and she would not betray their trust.
A negotiation in which all three sides stood to benefit—this was the best possible outcome.
